“Careful,” her dad warned, pulling her hand back before they could touch the flower. “It’s dangerous.”

“It’s a flower. A beautiful one, at that,” she argued. “It won’t hurt me.”

Her father’s eyes steeled, all warmth replaced with a stone cold gaze. “Do you know why roses are red?” She shook her head, and her father touched the flower with bare hands. He clenched it around his finger until the thorns pricked at his pale skin, the dark crimson trailing out of it like a steady stream of waterfall.

Repulsed, she pulled away from her father, jaw dropping when her father lifelessly stared at it. His blood dripped down along his wrist, then his arm, a sight so enticing—yet so dangerous. It gripped at her heart with confusion, but also fear.

“They’re red as a result of their thorns hurting one another. Roses are dangerous because they’re beautiful,” he spoke softly, gazing at his little girl with sadness pooling in his sunken eyes. “They mesmerize you with their beauty, beckoning you to kiss them, and when you do, it’s too late. Their thorns wrap around you until you become one with them, unable to pull away. But because they’re so enthralling—” he lifted a finger, eyes carefully watching the way his blood trailed down. “—not once does it cross your mind to leave. It’s so beautiful, that even if they hurt you, you’ll keep holding onto it anyway.”

“Dad, stop,” she begged, fishing her handkerchief from her pocket to wrap it around her father’s wound. His blood immediately stained the white cloth, like a drop of blood in the middle of snow. She looked away from the rose as a shiver ran down her spine.

“Be careful,” he warned one last time. “The only thing more dangerous than kissing a rose—” he closed her eyes, breath falling short as the painful memories of her played back at the back of his head, “—is when roses kiss.”
