Glossary of terms

Intern: Has completed medical school but doesn't yet have their licence to practice medicine independently. They usually spend their first year in the hospital rotating through different specialities to learn and assist the residents and fellows who are already specialising.

Resident: Has completed medical school and is pursuing further training in a speciality, usually from 2 to 7 years depending on the speciality. Residents are usually further split into junior residents (1st and 2nd year), senior residents (3rd year plus) and chief residents, who are in charge of other residents.

Fellow: Has completed their residency and has elected to complete further training in a specialty.

Attending: Has completed their training and is practicing independently in their chosen specialty. In the hierarchy of physicians, the attending is at the top under only the physicians who run the hospital itself.

Call shift or being on-call: The doctor must be ready to respond to any emergency called in to them via pager or cellphone. Call shifts range in length from 12 hours up to 36-plus.

Defibrillation: Administration of a controlled electric shock to restore normal heart rhythm in cases of cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation.

Abbreviations:

  • ED: Emergency department

  • Ventricular fibrillation (VF): Chaotic electrical and mechanical activity of the heart, which results in loss of synchonous contraction. The heart is not able to pump blood. The heart can sometimes be restored to normal by defibrillation.
  • Asystole: A condition in which the heart no longer beats and there is no electrical activity, shown by a flat line on the EKG. Cannot be restored to normal beating by defibrillation.

Foreword

Hey guys!

I just want to say a big thank you to JungMichan for wanting to write this with me. <3 It most likely wouldn't have been possible without her and I'm so grateful we got a story I'm so invested in and that I, personally, enjoy writing so much.

So thank you Michan for doing this with me! :D

Also - thank you so much for clicking in and showing interest in this! I hope everybody who reads enjoys it as much as we do writing it! ^_^

- Kim Minji / MissMinew

Hi everyone~ JungMichan here. I'm so excited to be writing this story with the lovely and talented Minji. I've wanted to write a medical drama-style fic for ages, and it's so much fun to do it as a collaboration! As we're both working in medical professions, we want to give you a glimpse into what it's really like to work in a hospital, and bring in some interesting and challenging personal and professional situations for our nine gorgeous specialists to deal with. As Minji said, I hope you have as much fun reading Hospital 365 as we're having writing it!
