Let's Make A Pact

Description

Kim JaeJoong and Oh SooJin have been friends since their days in diapers. They've been with each other through the greatest times, and through their worst.

The two find themselves contemplating their future and decide to make a pact. Is it made in jest or will they hold to that promise?

Foreword

Rain patters lightly against the warm pavement. Oh SooJin collapses into the swing of the small playground in front of her family's apartment building. Tears flowing down her face in a quiet sob. Her head hangs low with long wet tresses of her soft black hair shielding her sorrow from any passerbys.

Three years she poured into her relationship. Three years of what she thought would never end in heartbreak. It was the same story as before, she was not obedient enough, her career surpassed his and he felt inferior. He could not handle her success and felt cast in the shadows.

SooJin kicks the toes of her shoes into the woodchips beneath her and begins to rock in the swing, sliding the back of her hand across her cheek to deter her tears from continuing to fall.

"How could you not see the signs, idiot," she murmurs to herself, her feet lifting off the ground in an attempt to gain some height on the swing.

"OSOO!"

The shout stops SooJin's attempt to swing as she kicks some of the wood chips in a scattering fleet to come to a stop.

Osoo is the nickname given to and only used by Kim JaeJoog. They took one class of Jiu Jitsu together when they were seven. Upon hearing the term "osu" to acknowledge your understanding of the instructor, JaeJoong found it fitting to put her surname and beginning of her given name together.

"You do realize it's raining," he laughs holding his umbrella over her.

She looks up at the towering man in front of her, her eyes swollen and bloodshot. She cannot help but giggle at the clueless smirk he has across his face.

JaeJoong's smile quickly turns to a frown, bending down so the two are at eye level, "That coward broke up with you, didn't he?" His voice is a mixture of both venom and empathy for her pain. His deep and dark browns eyes search hers for the answer they both know.

SooJin turns away as tears begin their descent down her cheeks once more. She inhales in preparation of reliving the details of the breakup with her words when she is lifted from the seat of the swing.

JaeJoong's strength envelopes her in an embrace that expresses everything that does not need to be spoken between the two.

Unable to hold it in any longer, SooJin's body begins to tremble in loud sobs, burying her face into JaeJoong's chest and grasping onto the loose folds of his light blue button up.

"It was supposed to be different, this time. More time was put into this than the last one. He was so supportive at first. They all end up the same." She sputters between sobs, sniffles, and the rain that has now begun a roaring battle of determination to flood the playground.

"I told you he was an idiot, Osoo, from the second he tried to convince you not to take the promotion," JaeJoong shouts in an attempt to be heard above the rain.

JaeJoong grasps SooJin's shoulders with one arm, his free arm anchoring the umbrella above their heads and leads her into the entrance of the apartment building. He steers her past the elevators and through the stairwell door. With a swift motion, he pushes down on her shoulders and forces her to sit on the steps.

"Look, SooJin," he sighs, setting down next to her and resting his chin on top of her head, his arm back around her shoulders in a soothing embrace, "I am here for you, whenever you need it. I hope you know that. I love you." He whispers softly and places a kiss on top of her head.

"What's wrong with us? We're not bad people," SooJin whines through her recovering sob chokes. She fights not to start crying again as her thoughts replay the breakup.

"Nothing. We are amazing." JaeJoong laughs, bumping his knee against hers. "At least, I am."

SooJin shakes her head and shoves JaeJoong away, looping her arm around his to still keep him close. "What do I do? I'm pretty sure my Mom was expecting a marriage proposal and grandkids within the year."

JaeJoong laughs and runs his hand through his hair, "Already?" He rubs the back of his neck and scoffs, "I wonder what mine is thinking with me and HaeYoung."

SooJin nods and allows silence to fall between them. She wipes her face of a stray drop of water from the rain, and leans her head against JaeJoong's shoulder.

"Let's make a pact."

His words are even, but full of honesty and earnest.

SooJin sits up straight and stares up at him with a raised brow, trying to get a read on him.

"If the two of us are single by the time we turn 30, we'll marry each other."

SooJin laughs at the incredulous statement and shoulder bumps him playfully.

JaeJoong turns to her with a tight, straight face, allowing her to see the solemnity of his statement.

"I love you. I have always loved you. Why do you think I refuse to refer to you 'like a sister' or a family member?" His voice is oozes of certainty as he takes her hand into his. "We are always happy together, we know our likes and dislikes. I am proud of your work and would support you completely, even if you make more than me."

SooJin scrunches her face in uncertainty, listening to his proposal.

"In five years time, after your 30th birthday, if we are both single, let's get married." He finishes, holding up his right pinky to seal their pact.

SooJin searches JaeJoong's face for any sign of a joke. "I ..."

JaeJoong pushes his pinky closer to her face, "What harm will it do? A lot can happen to us in five years."

SooJin bites the left corner of her bottom lip, lifting her left hand in hesitation, "When we're 30?" she questions, hovering her pinky in front of his.

"In five years," he repeats, wrapping his pinky around hers and bringing his thumb up to seal the pact.

SooJin takes a deep breath and presses her thumb to his.

"Deal."
