Ch 17

Since No One Else Was Gonna Do It

After shutting the door and locking it, Wheein leaned against it with a dreamy sigh. She always thought that her mind would be a nervous wreck after her first kiss. But she surprised herself. She was calm. Giddy but calm.

Her hand went towards . She could still feel Hyejin’s lips against hers. Hyejin’s passionate yet tender kiss. A kiss that told Wheein a thousand words. A thousand words and a thousand pictures. A serene smile etched itself on Wheein’s face as she continued to think about the kiss.

It was a surprise, especially since Wheein was blind. But, Hyejin’s touch is never unwelcomed. Once Hyejin’s lips touched hers, she froze but for a moment. A moment to comprehend that Hyejin was truly kissing her. And after that moment, she kissed back.

That’s what really surprised her. How eager she was to kiss Hyejin back. How natural it felt and how she wanted more. How she wanted more of Hyejin.

“So, the prodigal daughter returns.”

Her mom’s voice snapped her out of her bliss.

Wheein squinted and hissed as the lights came on. After blinking a couple of times, she looked up to see her parents on the balcony. They both had knowing looks. Knowing looks and teasing smiles. Her mother seemed to be vibrating with excitement while her mom still had a collected poise.  That could only mean one thing. Wheein could only gulp and contemplate an escape route.

“Whee--”

Upon hearing the first sounds out of her mom’s mouth, Wheein did what any sane teenager would do when they don’t want to confront their parents.

She bolted.

Wheein immediately ran to her room in a fury. All while clutching Hyejin’s gift and making sure it won’t escape her grasp as she ran towards safety.

Moonbyul and Yong quickly looked at each other before giving chase.

“Wheein-ah!”

“You need to tell us about your date!!”

“Yea, why did you two stay in the car so long?”

Wheein tripped but caught herself. Of course they would notice something like that. She prayed that her and Hyejin weren’t caught on the security cameras.

“Wheein.”

Wheein looked behind her to see that her mom was right there.

“The !!” Wheein yelled before picking up speed. Her room was near. Too near. If she were to slow down now then she would be in the dragon’s grasp. So she continued to run.

She went down the hallway towards her room with what maximum speed her little legs would carry her. Her mom remained hot on her heels. There’s only one way to get out this dragon’s grasp. Trickery.

She feigned going left, towards her room, before switching on her feet and dashing through the vinyl covering and straight into the pool area. But there was only one problem.

Her mom taught her those feet techniques.

Yong easily followed Wheein. Wheein’s footwork was amazing and fluid, but still no match for the master. Moonbyul, on the other hand, was struggling.

While her wife and daughter ran on ahead, Moonbyul lingered behind. She would rather witness this entertainment than be a part of it. Besides, just because she can’t keep up with them doesn’t mean she’s out of the picture. Nay, she’s the shadow in the background to their bright foreground.

So, while the chase continued, Wheein using her footwork and desperation to out pace her mom, Moonbyul calmly walked over to Wheein’s room. She doesn’t go in, but instead she stands in front of the door. Soon or later Wheein will come back in one last bid to escape.

And it was sooner rather than later.

Moonbyul saw Wheein turn the corner and saw the recognition on her daughter’s face. The recognition that she was running into a trap. Moonbyul smirked as she took her stance. Like a catcher ready to receive whatever the pitcher throws. In this case, ready to receive Wheein, even if she was barreling right towards her.

Wheein only had a few seconds to think. With her mother right in front and her mom in the back, this was the perfect pincer move. She was trapped. She was caged. There was nowhere to go, except down.

Not even thinking, and relying solely on luck and the freshly polished floors, Wheein went into a slide. A straight leg slide. It was so outlandish, so sudden, that Moonbyul jumped out of the way. Yong was so confused that she didn’t even stop before she crashed into Moonbyul. A great distraction. Taking the brief confusion and yelling that came from her parents crashing into each other, Wheein escaped into her room and locked the door behind her. Taking a couple of deep breaths to regain her composure, she leaned and slid down the door.

“Wheein-ah, why won’t you talk to us?” Her mother asked in a whine.

“We’ve been waiting all night to hear back from you but no! Not even a text to let us know that you’re fine, or that you two are having a moment and to not bug you for a couple of hours, or even a text that you were coming back home.” Her mom said in a straight tone.

At her mother’s implication, Wheein felt her face flush.

“I’ll tell you two in the morning!” Wheein yelled through the door. All she wants to do is take a shower and go to bed. Well, and think about tonight some more but that’s beside the point.

She heard her parents muffled agreement and soon heard their footsteps leading away from her door. She also heard her mother ask her mom what kind of moment she meant because why have a moment to only be separated afterwards. A loud smack and her mother’s pained groan followed shortly afterwards and Wheein only hummed. Looks like she also misinterpreted her mom’s words.

After a few more moments, making sure that her parents were gone, Wheein finally got up to take a shower. But first, she had to securely place Hyejin’s gift on her bed. Her precious gift from Hyejin.

“Now don’t attack Lion, Ggomo.” Wheein waved a finger at the lounging Ggomo.

Ggomo only stared at Wheein before flicking his tail and going back to sleep.

“Good. I’m glad we have an understanding.” Wheein said as she went to gather her night clothes. Of course, she didn’t go into the shower before giving Ggomo a little kiss on his head first.

It was the fastest shower Wheein ever took. It was less than five minutes but she had a good reason. She couldn’t trust Ggomo to not attack the lion plushie that Hyejin gave her. So she had to make her shower quick less she came back to an injured lion. To her joy, Ggomo behaved himself and did not touch the plushie. All he did was stay in one place.

She grabbed the plushie and tucked herself into bed and began her nightly ritual. Check her phone, get comfortable, get uncomfortable thus changing positions, repeat for a couple of times, lay in the darkness with her thoughts, eventually fall asleep. Or, that’s how her normal ritual goes.

The moment she checked her phone, a smile stretched across her face. Hyejin messaged her while she was in the shower.

Night babe~ Take care of Lion~

Wheein couldn’t help but giggle to herself. She was Hyejin’s babe now. She couldn’t help but feel giddy again. But that didn’t stop her from responding.

Night Hyejin. Take care of our loot!

This was all new to her, and despite her fears of this ever happening, Hyejin made everything comfortable. Wheein always thought dating someone meant having to go through multiple dates before someone asks the other to be their significant other. Hyejin completely inverted Wheein’s conception of what it meant to have feelings for another person and to date that person. Huh, maybe the media did affect her outlook more than she thought.

She always thought the process would be a lot different. She thought she would just see someone one day and bam, immediately have feelings for that person. Romantic feelings. And, if all goes well, that person will feel the same about her and ask her out. After a couple of outings, then she will become someone's girlfriend. But not with Hyejin. The first time she saw Hyejin, the only feeling she felt was general curiosity. It wasn’t like any of the romantic type feelings she felt before, her minor crushes. No, her crushes always developed with those she befriended first so--

Oh.

Wheein hummed at her revelation but it was too late to fully contemplate it. Instead she decided to sleep on it. Plugging her phone in to charge and placing it on the table, she turned around with the lion plushie in front of her.

“Night, Lion.” Wheein lovingly said to the plush while it’s mane.

Wheein giggled one last time before giving the plush a kiss on the snout and finally tried to go to sleep. Normally it would take her ages to fall asleep but not tonight. Even with the excitement from earlier, nothing could beat the comfort of having a soft stuffed animal in your arms. So, with the last thought of admitting that she’s Hyejin’s girlfriend now, Wheein fell asleep. She fell asleep with a smile and to Hyejin’s scent that came from the stuffed lion.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“I swear to all that is good in this world, if you don’t stop yelling then I’m never sharing my food with you ever again!”
Ji Yeon was sound asleep when Hyejin began to endlessly try to call her. It took ten tries but Hyejin finally got Ji Yeon to answer and immediately began to gush. Much to Ji Yeon’s dismay.
“How can I stop? I kissed her, Ji Yeon! A kiss!” Hyejin’s voice was full of euphoria.
“Okay, yea, I get it. You finally kissed her and you're ecstatic, great.” Ji Yeon huffed. Being woken up to immediate yelling would put anyone in a bad mood.
“More than ecstatic, Kei!” Hyejin regressed to calling Ji Yeon by her childhood nickname.
“You’re on that high known as pure bliss and are thus in a euphoric rush?” Ji Yeon asked in a dead tone.
“God, I want to kiss her again.” Hyejin sighed, “Her lips were soft and sweet. I just--”
“As long as you two don’t become that couple in school. You know, the ones that can’t keep their hands off of each other,” Ji Yeon paused, contemplating what she just said, “Nevermind, you two can’t keep your hands off each other anyway so just don’t become that couple that need to make out twenty-four seven.”
Hyejin chuckled, “Oh, please. I’m better than that. I’ll just give her tons of butterfly kisses on her cute face and neck!”
Ji Yeon only groaned while Hyejin laughed.
“Hyejin, I swear--”
“Relax, Kei. I don’t want to rush things with her. She deserves better than that. I’ll only kiss her if she let’s me or wants me to.”
“Hmm. And if she wants you to kiss her anytime you want? Then what?”
Hyejin paused. Her immediate reaction would be to take advantage of it, but she also doesn’t want to take it for granted. She wants to treasure it. She wants to loudly be affectionate with Wheein but also be soft enough to not garner any extra attention.
“Finally, silence for five seconds.”
“Hey! I was conflicted.”
“Oh my god, you really were torn between kissing her all the time and saving those kisses, weren’t you?”
“Uh…..Yea.” A sheepish reply.
Ji Yeon sighed, “Wow, you really do like her. That’s a first.”
It was true. All the other dates and relationships that Hyejin had before had never had such an impact on Hyejin. Sure, she cared for the other person but never was she this ecstatic. Never this eager to please. Never this state of euphoria. And from the past couple of weeks alone, Hyejin changed. No, not changed. Other aspects of her true personality were brought out. As if those aspects were just waiting for the right person to come along and embrace them.
This is the most Ji Yeon has ever seen Hyejin smile. Smile with her full heart. It was as if the moment Wheein came into the picture, Hyejin lowered her walls that she showed the outside world. She became more open. She still had the image of a trouble maker, but as of late, Hyejin rarely got into fights. Which makes sense. Ji Yeon overheard Wheein reprimanding Hyejin on all the fights she has gotten into before and how they were being detrimental to her studies.
Ji Yeon had to admit, she was a little jealous. Not even she could understand Hyejin at times, let alone interpret what she’s thinking. But Wheein was able to do that, and more, with ease. Ji Yeon wouldn’t say Wheein tamed Hyejin. It was more of a mutual understanding. Wheein understood Hyejin enough to come to a mutual understanding and vice versa. A mutual relationship. Both gave to each other, both took from each other, but neither gave more nor took more than they needed. Together, they brought out their best qualities.
And from what Ji Yeon saw in Hyejin’s eyes, the way Hyejin would look at Wheein, there was only one explanation.
“Hyejin-ah….” Ji Yeon paused. Contemplating if she should even ask. Afterall, they are just sixteen year olds. What do they know? Their brains may not be fully developed but they do have a fully developed heart.
“Yup?”
“How do you exactly feel about Wheein?” Ji Yeon asked with emphasis. Depending on Hyejin’s answer, she will either have to pick between the two of them or support their relationship.
“I…...I  like her, but……that isn’t….” Hyejin’s voice trailed off. As if scared to admit how she really feels.
“But?”
A few seconds ticked by with no answer. A moment longer and Ji Yeon would’ve begun to worry. But, with Hyejin’s determined sigh, she knew Hyejin’s answer.
Hyejin’s voice was full of conviction. There was no doubt in her heart or mind in what she feels. She just has to verbalise them and later act upon them.
“I like her. But it’s more than that......I love her.”
Chapter 31: I just finished reading this and I can't wait to re-read it the next time I feel a little off. Your story has given me so much comfort in the past 24 hours. I loved every single second of reading it. Ji Yeon's persona, the dynamics between all the characters and especially Wheein and Hyejin. I was so scared that you were going to add a pile of drama when they got together so soon, but you suprised me in the most amazing way and had them communicate. I loved the way you described their way of understanding each other, how supportive they were and how they communicate via touch. It was so pure and soft.
I wished this was turned into a movie so we could all finally get that healthy f/f movie.
But for now, thank you for writing this and sharing this. I can't wait to read your other pieces :)
