“So… I wanted to talk about school.” I pause to let my parents get ready for the rest, shifting nervously on the chair. “I want to stop the business major.” There’s a short silence. My parents, sitting at the table of the living room as well, just stare at me. “And what else do you want to do?” eventually asks my dad. “I’m not sure yet but I just really hate this major. It’s not interesting, too hard for me and I don’t like it.” My mom makes an irritated noise with before interrogating, “And what about the job you’ll do after graduating?” “I’ll find that later.” Dad sighs and rolls his eyes. “This is ridiculous!” mom bursts. “You need to come out of a good major at a good university to have a good job!” I shake my head. “I can’t continue. This is giving me anxiety, I’m tired, I just hate it too much.” “What else do you think you can study to get a stable job in an office?!” “I don’t know, Dad! But for sure I don’t care about having a “stable office job”! I want to study something that I like and have a job that I enjoy.” “You think that’ll give you a comfortable life?!” Mom scoffs, “Look around you, you think the money your father and I have just dropped down from the sky? You think we can send you to college in Seoul just by “enjoying” ourselves?!” “You’ll learn to like your major and your future job, don’t worry,” dad adds. “No, I-” “You need to work in an office,” mom cuts, not letting room for me to speak. “For yourself and to repay everything we did for you too.
