"Nayeon, we have a thief in this house. Someone has stolen my jewelry chest this morning." SungRyung spoke. She glanced at Mina a few times, making Mina feel uncomfortable.
"What? Your jewelry? Eomma, have you looked for it? Maybe you forgot where you put it. Our house is secured, there's no way a thief would come to our house." Nayeon said.
SungRyung insisted. "I always put my jewelry chest inside my cabinet. I never moved it from there. There's a thief here, Nayeon. I have called the police. They will come soon."
"Oh, I hope they can find the thief and retrieve the jewelry." Nayeon commented. She thought her mother was just overreacting and most likely just forgot where she had put the jewelry.
Meanwhile, Mina was ready to leave the mansion. She bowed politely and made a sign to excuse herself.
"Mam, I hope you will find your jewelry soon." She then turned at Nayeon. "I'm going home now, Nayeon."
"Okay, be careful, Mina. See you on Monday." Nayeon nodded.
Mina and Nayeon then walked together to the front door. But of course, SungRyung just had to stop them.
"No, Myoui, you're not leaving this house until the police come."
Nayeon stared at her mother, frowning.
"Eomma. You don't think Mina steals your jewelry, do you?"
SungRyung stared at Nayeon and Mina.
"I don't want to accuse anyone, but I want to make sure no one in this house is involved in this. Myoui Mina, you need to stay here until the police come."
Mina blinked, confused. "O-Okay. I will stay."
Nayeon didn't say anything. She just stared and frowned at her mother. Nayeon was sure everything would be okay though. Her mother must have forgotten where she had put her jewelry chest. And even if someone indeed had stolen it, Nayeon was sure it wasn't Mina. There's no way Mina would steal SungRyung's jewelry.
Soon the police officers arrived at the Im Mansion. Everyone in the house was then gathered in the main room, except Dahyun and Jihyo. Dahyun was in Seoul, joining a horse-racing competition. While Jihyo was having an emergency in the hospital.
The police then checked everything inside the house. They spent an hour searching for the jewelry, and questioning everyone, especially the maids and the butlers, but they still couldn't find it.
During this time, Mina asked once again whether she could go home or not, but SungRyung didn't allow her, saying Mina had to wait until everything was clear. Mina was actually worried for her father, but she couldn't do anything. If she left the place and went home without their permission, it would make her look like the villain.
"Is there any guest coming to this house this morning, Mam?" One of the officers asked.
"No, I don't have a guest today." SungRyung said.
"Were you at home all day today?"
"No. I was attending an exhibition at the art museum today. I came home an hour ago, and I found my jewelry chest was gone. The thief must have come into my room while I was away."
"Did you lock your room today?"
"Yes, I did. And I see the door is not broken. So the thief must have used a spare key."
"Okay, let's check it."
They then went to SungRyung's bedroom, and they found the door was not broken.
"Who keeps your spare key, Mam?"
"No one, I keep it myself. But sometimes I give my key to my butler, Taewoo, when I go on a long trip."
The officers then called the butler. They asked a few questions. They then checked Taewoo's bedroom and his belongings. But they still couldn't find the jewelry.
"Kim Taewoo, you're going to come to our office for further questioning." The police said.
Taewoo looked worried. He had been working for the Im Family for more than ten years. And he was very loyal to this family. It had never crossed his mind to steal something from this house. And therefore, being accused as a thief made him panic.
Nayeon spoke to her mother. "Eomma, I don't think Taewoo did this. He has been working for us for ten years. There's no way he would try to steal anything from us."
SungRyung nodded. "I know. Officer, don't take my butler, please check Myoui instead. She's our only guest today." She pointed at Mina.
"W-Wait! I'm just visiting here-" Mina said, baffled.
The police officers quickly came at Mina.
"Miss Myoui, what are you doing here in this house?" One of the officers asked.
"I'm studying with Nayeon." Mina said.
"Where?" The officer asked.
"In the library. I'm with Nayeon all day." Mina said.
"Not all day." Jennie interrupted. "I asked Nayeon to come and talk with me a few times. During those times, Mina was alone. She had a chance to sneak around in this house if she wanted to."
Mina glared at Jennie, feeling annoyed at the accusation.
"Well, we have to check you, Myoui. Open your jacket. And put all your belongings here." The officer said.
"What? But I didn't steal anything!" Mina argued.
"This is just a procedure, Miss."
The policeman scanned Mina's body, searching through her pockets. They checked her jacket, her bag, her wallet, but they didn't find anything.
"Check her car too, officer." SungRyung said.
Mina glared at SungRyung. "What? Are you accusing me? I'm not a thief!"
Nayeon tried to defend Mina. "Eomma, I'm sure Mina didn't steal anything."
"Well, if she's clean then we don't have nothing to worry about. Just check her car, Officer." Jennie said calmly.
"Alright. Let's check the car. Where is your car, Myoui?"
"At the front yard." Mina replied hesitantly, still feeling annoyed upon receiving this treatment.
Everyone then went out to the front yard to check Mina's car. They found the car was unlocked, which made Mina confused because as she remembered, she had made sure to lock her car after she parked it there today.
Mina was about to tell the policeman about it. But the policeman already went inside her car, and within a second they found the jewelry chest inside the car.
Mina and Nayeon were surprised to see this.
SungRyung spoke glaringly. "She's the thief! Arrest her, officer!"
Mina went panicking. "What? No! I'm not a thief! I didn't steal that jewelry!"
SungRyung spoke, still glaringly. "The evidence is clear, Myoui! You can't deny it! You must have come to my room and stole my jewelry when Nayeon left you alone in the library, right?"
Mina shook her head. "No! This is a trap! Someone has put that jewelry inside my car!" She turned at Nayeon. "Nayeon, I didn't steal it! You have to believe me!"
Nayeon nodded. "I know, Mina, I believe you." She then turned at the officer. "Officer, there must be some misunderstanding here. Mina is my friend. She won't steal anything from us." Nayeon tried to explain.
Meanwhile, SungRyung was checking the jewelry inside the chest.
"There should be more jewelry inside here, officer. Myoui, where did you put the rest?" SungRyung asked.
Mina found herself baffled.
"I don't know! I'm not the one who stole it! Oh, wait! You're the one who set this trap for me! You never like me, that's why you’re doing this to me!"
SungRyung glared at Mina.
"How dare you talk to me like that! After all the privileges you've received from my family, you still have grown no respect for us!"
The two glared at each other.
While the officers continued searching in Mina's car. They were searching for the rest of the jewelry, but they couldn't find it. Instead, they found a spare key. They then checked the spare key and found it matched SungRyung's bedroom door.
"See? She has the key to my room! There's no doubt, she's the thief! Myoui, where did you get it? Did you steal my key and duplicate it?" SungRyung asked angrily.
“I- I don’t know! It’s not me!” Mina said in panic. She felt desperate. She realized she had just fallen to her enemies' trap.
“Officer, arrest her!” SungRyung said.
The officer took out a handcuff and came to Mina.
"Myoui Mina, you are under arrest for jewelry theft. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law." He said as he put the handcuff on Mina's wrists.
Mina struggled a bit. She wanted to fight them and run away, but then she realized it would make her look like the bad guy in front of everyone. Even if she managed to escape now, they would come and find her again. And Mina knew better than running away from the police.
The Japanese cowgirl couldn't do anything other than letting herself being subdued by the officers. They twisted her arms behind her back and put the handcuff on her wrists.
Mina then looked at Nayeon. Her eyes were pleading.
"Nayeon, please believe me. I didn't steal anything. You have to believe me! Nayeon!"
Nayeon stared at Mina. She couldn't help but feel guilty for Mina, because this incident happened inside her house, and Nayeon was sure Jennie and Jaebum were the ones behind this.
Nayeon tried to calm her girlfriend. "Mina, I'm sorry for this. I promise I will help you out." She whispered.
The officers spent a few minutes talking to SungRyung, and then they took Mina away to the police station.
Nayeon turned and spoke to her mother.
"Eomma, I'm sure Mina didn't steal it. Someone in this house must have set a trap for her."
"Who? Who set a trap for her? Nayeon, the evidence is very clear. She stole my jewelry."
Nayeon glanced at Jennie. She tried to read Jennie's expression. But her cousin didn't show any sign of emotion. Just like Nayeon, Jennie was the master of a poker face.
SungRyung went to her room. And Nayeon then walked up to Jennie.
"I know you're behind this, Jennie. You and Jaebum. You set this trap for Mina." Nayeon bared her teeth as she spoke in a whisper. She was currently trying hard to control her anger.
Jennie turned and frowned at Nayeon.
"Oh why, Cousin, everytime something happens, you always blame it on me? I heard there was a fire accident in Mina's land. She probably has a financial issue right now, that's why she decided to steal the jewelry. Do you ever think of that? Maybe Mina is not the good girl you always think she is. You're trusting her way too much." Jennie whispered back, and then she left.
Nayeon took a deep breath and just stared at her cousin from behind.
She quickly went to her room and made a phone call to everyone. She made a phone call to Yejin, Jeongyeon, and to her sisters, Jihyo and Dahyun, and told them about what had happened today to Mina. Everyone was surprised to hear the news. Jeongyeon said she would come early on Monday to help Nayeon find a solution to this problem.
