in my eyes, you're the most beautiful thing i've ever known

flowers and stars are pretty, but you're the most beautiful thing i've ever known.

[Unnie, I got us some chestnuts and sweet potatoes. Let’s meet at the rooftop and eat them while they’re warm!] Yuna delights in the message that displays when her phone buzzes.

[You’ve ended work? I thought you were going to work till late today?]

[Yahh, it’s late already. What have you been doing?]

Yuna grimaces. [You’re talking down to unnie?]

Eunbi releases a soft giggle. The next message comes in, [Walk carefully and don’t keep looking at your phone!]

The prickling breeze in the night of the autumn has no ability to wipe off the growing smile on Eunbi’s face.

“The stars are out today,” Yuna dreamily says, both their heads lifted and their eyes far into the night sky.

Eunbi pops another chestnut into . As she chews on it, Eunbi enjoys the silence that embraces them, and the view above them.

“They’re beautiful,” Eunbi breathes, mesmerised.

Yuna holds a carefully peeled sweet potato in her hands, her body turned towards Eunbi, as the younger takes a bite.

“That was a huge bite, you didn’t get any of the skin?”

Eunbi shakes her head. “It’s okay,” she speaks in a nasal voice.

“Pig,” Yuna curtly calls.

“Unnie!”

“You’re whining a lot today,” Yuna remarks.

“‘Cos unnie’s being annoying,” Eunbi wrinkles her nose and speaks without taking her eyes off the bag of chestnuts in her hands.

“And bold today huh? Coupled with some aegyo,” Yuna gently pinches Eunbi’s cheeks.

“Unnie!” Eunbi protests again, “I can be cute too,” she retorts.

“I’d rather a cute Eunbi any day rather than a depressed one,” Yuna smiles with a cautious reply.

Eunbi’s hands lifelessly drop. With her fingers still clutching onto the bag of chestnuts on one hand, she sticks it out and hands it over to Yuna.

“I haven’t been depressed in a few years. I was miserable in the summer yes, for some time since meeting you, but I couldn’t be depressed. I wasn’t lonely. I had you,” Eunbi softly says.

“I’m happy whenever I’m with you,” Eunbi continues, now turning to look at Yuna.

The wind blows and Yuna’s hair flows beautifully along with it.

Eunbi’s eyes begin to water; she does not know if it is the wind, or, “I’ve been seeing too many beautiful things recently.”

Yuna tilts her head, her lips displaying a puzzled smile.

“It’s a pity that the plants and trees are all dried out now. Ah,” Eunbi releases a breath, gazing into the distance again. “Autumn is boring. Summer was eventful even though some of the events were terrible. Ah, autumn. My days are happier, definitely, but memorable times, there aren’t many. There are no flowers, and stars only on cloudless nights.

“Unnie, when the spring comes, I’d like to go see the flowers with you,” Eunbi smiles, looking into Yuna’s eyes.

“I didn’t think you were the type to pursue such beauty,” Yuna says in an untelling tone.

Eunbi laughs, her laughter falling sweetly on Yuna’s ears like the soft ringing of bells. “I didn’t think so too. But sometimes life is just too ugly. Sometimes I am too ugly. Watching beautiful things makes life less ugly.”

Yuna shakes her head, even though she shares Eunbi’s exact sentiments.

Eunbi glances deeply into Yuna’s almond eyes and takes a deep breath.

“You’re beautiful too, unnie,” she says rather solemnly, “you're the most beautiful thing I've ever known.”
