Candy Corn and Scary Stories

Yunho entered his home only to be greeted by the chaotic combination of laughter, shouting, and screaming from young boys. Yunho furrowed his brow. He could’ve sworn that he had two boys before leaving for work this morning. Now his home sounded like a playground. “Yunho! Is that you?” Jaejoong called from the kitchen. “Yeh.” Yunho slipped off his shoes ands lid into his house slippers. “Did you go to the store?!” Jaejoong asked over the noise. “Yes~.” Yunho answered.

“Uncle Yunho!” Once of the boys ran to the man as he entered the kitchen. “Hey Jongin.” Yunho ruffled the 10-year-old’s hair. The other boys greeted him as well, before running back off to their playing.

“Daehyun, you’ve worn this costume for the past two years now. Don’t you want to be something else?” Jaejoong questioned his son as he tied the cape around the 11-year old’s neck. “No. Youngjae likes vampires. He said vampires are cool. So, I want to be a vampire this year.” Daehyun answered proudly. Jaejoong chuckled and shook his head before standing up. “Well, your costume is done and ready to go.” He announced. Daehyun’s face beamed, “Yay! Thank you Appa~!” He thanked before running off with the others.

“Hey.” Yunho walked to his husband, giving the elder a light peck on the lips. “You got what I asked?” Jaejoong’s eyes lit up as he took the grocery bags from the younger’s arms and started looking through them. “Mm hmm~…” Yunho hummed. However, his husband frowned when he pulled out three large bags of candy. “I thought I specifically told you not to get candy.”

Yunho scoffed, “You couldn’t expect me to not get candy. It’s Halloween.” He defended. “That’s exactly why. They’re already going to get a lot of candy as it is.” Jaejoong argued. “It’s only one day Jae.” “And another night I’m not going to get any sleep.” The elder groaned. Yunho chuckled. “At least we’ll go through it together.” He kissed the top of his lover’s forehead, who only hummed doubtfully.

“Anyway, I could’ve sworn I only had two sons this morning before I left.” Yunho said, getting to his question. “We’re stuck on babysitting duty tonight.” Jaejoong informed, beginning to put the groceries away. Yunho Joined him.

“My brother dropped Jongin over a couple of hours ago, because he wanted to go trick or treating with Daehyun and Jaehyun.” Jaejoong explained. Yunho nodded in understanding. “And I invited Taeyong next door to go trick or treating with the boys.” Yunho wasn’t surprised by this. Jaejoong spoke about inviting the shy boy to join their sons before. “And Jaehyun invited his school friends Johnny and Ten over too.” Jaejoong finished. “But that’s not all of them yet. Daehyun asked if Youngjae could sleep over, and Jongin’s friend, Kyungsoo, is supposed to stop by also.”

“Sounds like we’re gonna have a full house tonight.” Yunho remarked. “Yeah, and I have a feeling none of them are going to go home until tomorrow.” Jaejoong sighed. Yunho raised an eyebrow at this strange behavior. “I thought you like having kids over.”

“Not on Halloween night when their energy is above a thousand. Plus, the boys are older now. They don’t want me around when they’re hanging out with their friends.” Jaejoong pouted at the latter thought.

“That means you can spend time with me.” Yunho winked. Jaejoong playfully rolled his eyes and took out the vegetables and other ingredients he needed out the fridge. He went to the sink and started washing the veggies.

“I’m serious. When the kids go trick or treating, we can watch a movie.” Yunho suggested. Jaejoong blinked, “You mean, let them go by themselves?” He questioned.

Yunho looked at him. “You weren’t planning on going with them, were you?”

“Well, yeah.”

“Jae, they’re old enough to go on their own.” Yunho told them. “But Yun-,” “Dae and Jae are responsible and know their way around. Daehyun is gonna be 12 soon. If anything happens, he could always call us.” Yunho cut him off.

Jaejoong frowned. He wasn’t completely convinced but gave in anyway. “Fine.” He sighed, trusting his husband’s words. “Good. I have a good movie that we can watch.” Yunho hugged the ravenous man from behind, resting his chin on his shoulder. “It’s not a horror movie, is it?” “Of course, it is, but don’t worry. I’ll be here with you.” Yunho smirked, kissing the side of his neck. Jaejoong shook his head but was internally excited about the home movie.

The doorbell rang a few minutes later. “I got it!” Daehyun ran to the door, followed by the rest of the boys and his father. “Youngjae!” Daehyun cheered when he opened the door. Youngjae and Kyungsoo bowed and greeted Yunho before entering the house. “Kyungsoo hyung!” Jongin ran to his best friend and hugged him.

“You’re a vampire again?” Youngjae questioned his friend. Daehyun nodded proudly. “I only dress as a vampire, because I am a vampire.” Daehyun answered proudly. “No, you’re not.” Youngjae folded his arms. “Yes I am. So, you better be careful or else I’ll your blood.” Daehyun bared his fake fangs and started chasing the younger. Youngjae screamed, running away from him.

Yunho shook his head, amused by the scene. “Looks like everyone is here, assuming that Daehyun doesn’t catch Youngjae.” He turned to the rest of the boys who were anxiously waiting at the door. Taeyong’s eyes widened at his words. “Is Daehyun hyung really a vampire?” He asked fearfully. No, he’s not Taeyong. Daehyun is being weird. Vampires aren’t weird.” Jaehyun shook his head knowingly. Taeyong slowly nodded, not 100 percent convinced.

“You guys ready?” Yunho asked once Youngjae and Daehyun rejoined the group. “Neh~.” The 8 boys answered in unison. “Wait, wait.” Jaejoong quickly ran out the kitchen. “Don’t forget your baskets.” He said, handing each child a candy basket that they decorated earlier. “Alright, just a little run down before you guys go. Daehyun and Kyungsoo, you two are in charge since you’re the oldest.” Yunho began.

“W-We’re going by ourselves?” Taeyong asked wide-eyed. Yunho nodded. “Y-You’re not coming with us?” Yunho nodded once more. Taeyong became more fearful by the fact. Jaejoong knelt down in front of him and placed his hand on the 9-year-old’s shoulder. “It’s okay Taeyong. You guys will be fine as long as you stick together.” He assured him, while also assuring himself at the same time.

The boy shook his head. “But…but it’s Halloween. What if we bump into monsters or…or ghosts?” he shivered immensely at the possibilities. “Don’t worry Tae. There is no such thing as monsters and ghosts either.” Jaehyun promised.

Johnny and Ten giggled at this. “Are you Sure~?” They questioned, booing underneath their ghost costumes, causing Taeyong to shrink behind Jaehyun. “Yah!” Jaehyun spat threateningly at them. The two snickered underneath their breaths, backing down a little.

Jaejoong looked at Yunho with a worried expression, silently pleading him to let him join them. But Yunho shut down the plea with the shake of his head.

Jaejoong let out a defeated sigh and turned to the boy in his peter pan costume. “Don’t worry Taeyong. It’ll be fun. When you guys get back, I’ll have tasty snacks ready for you. How does that sound? Does that sound good?” Taeyong slowly nodded, still hidden behind Jaehyun. “Good.” Jaejoong gave him a warm smile before standing back up.

“And you guys don’t get any snacks if you try to scare Taeyong.” Jaehyun warned Johnny and Ten, who were secretly scheming to each other. “Hey~, we’re not gonna scare him.” Johnny frowned, not appreciating the threat. “Yeah~. You’re being no fun Jaehyun.” Ten pouted. Jaehyun glared at them, not believing their words.

“Can we go now? I’m gonna starve if I don’t get candy soon.” Daehyun groaned anxiously. “Vampires don’t eat candy.” Youngjae said matter-of-factly. “Yeah, but I’m a special vampire. I’m a candy vampire.” Daehyun responded.

Jongin furrowed his brow in confusion, “There’s no such thing as candy vampires.” He finally said. “Shhhhhh~,” Daehyun shushed his cousin.

“Alright.” Yunho clasped his hands. “You guys better go before it gets late.” He said. “Jaehyun, Daehyun, do you remember the rules?” Jaejoong quizzed. “Yeh~, don’t leave the neighborhood, stick together, and be home before 8:30.” They recited in unison. “good. Now go out and get lots of candy.” Yunho opened the front door, setting the group of young boys free.

“I guess I should get the candy ready to hand out.” Jaejoong said, about to return to the kitchen when Yunho caught his wrist. “We’re not handing out candy this year.” Yunho told him. “What?” “We have a movie to watch, and only 3 hours to watch it before the boys come back.” Yunho explained, already guiding him to the couch of the family room.

“Yunho I-,” “Shhhh~, You’ve worked hard all week. Just take a few hours to relax.” Yunho sat down first and pulled the elder onto his lap.

Jaejoong gasped but let out a soft laughter. “Fine. But I don’t know how you expect me to relax during a horror movie.” “I have that all planned out.” Yunho wrapped his arms around the slender male’s waist and kissed his temple. Jaejoong laid back into his husband’s embrace as the younger the movie.

The movie seemed to go on forever for Jaejoong. He was thoroughly reminded as to why he hated horror films in the first place. For Yunho on the other hand, the movie wasn’t long enough. He enjoyed the moments his husband clung onto him and buried his face into his chest. But the moment was short lived when a knock was heard on the front door.

Jaejoong was the first to turn off the television and ran to the door. “You guys are back!” He’d never been so relieved to have the kids back home. Taeyong was the first to run inside, followed by the others. “Appa! Look at all the candy I got.” Daehyun showed Jaejoong his overflowing basket of candy.

Oh dear. Jaejoong thought to himself. He’d have to somehow hide his candy, so he wouldn’t at least eat it all up in one night. “Daehyun didn’t get all that himself. He stole candy from everyone’s basket.” Jaehyun told him.

Jaejoong chuckled, not surprised. “No, I didn’t.” Daehyun defended. “Yes, you did.” Jaehyun argued. “I didn’t steal from Youngjae’s basket.” Daehyun folded his arms. Jaehyun stuck his tongue at him before joining the others at the kitchen table to show off their treats.

Once he was sure everyone was inside, Jaejoong shut the door and entered the kitchen, where Yunho was already stealing pieces of candy from the boys. Jaejoong shook his head. Like father like son.

“You guys must be hungry, hm?” He asked, opening the fried to grab the variations of veggie snacks he prepared before they left. “Yeah!” The group cheered. Their excitement boosted at the sound of food.

Taeyong’s eyes grew wide in anticipation as Jaejoong placed the familiar snacks on the center of the table. However, Daehyun didn’t look as pleased. “Vegetables~?” He whined. “Vegetables make you stronger, like Popeye.” Kyungsoo said, reaching for the first snack in his sailor costume. “Not me. Candy makes me stronger.” Daehyun folded his arms. Jaejoong gave him a look, earning a cheeky smile from the costumed vampire.

“I like veggies.” Youngjae stated, reaching for the snacks as well. “Me too!” Daehyun perked, copying the younger’s action. “but you just said-,” “No I didn’t.” Daehyun cut Jongin off before he could finish.

The boys chatted among themselves, describing and reliving their recent venture. They laughed and joked around. Their voices filled the silence of the room. They didn’t calm down until they started gambling and trading their candy, a serious matter which required all their attention. Yunho and Jaejoong found the interaction amusing as they watched them from the center of the kitchen, where they sat at the island counter, enjoying their own meal.

“Let’s go upstairs and tell scary stories!” Ten suggested after losing nearly half his candy. “yeah. We can tell them in my room.” Jaehyun agreed. “I know a lot of scary stories.” Johnny informed confidently. Taeyong was hesitant but followed anyway as they climbed down from their seats. He clung closely to Jaehyun. The boys thanked Jaejoong and Yunho for the food before making their way to Jaehyun’s room.

“Should we stop them?” Jaejoong asked, concerned for his neighbor’s son. “He’ll be fine. What kind of scary stories could they possibly know anyway?” Yunho questioned.

Jaejoong bit his bottom lip but decided against interfering. He’d probably end up embarrassing Taeyong if he stepped in.

“Besides, we have a movie to finish.” Yunho grinned cheekily. “We finished the movie.” “Mm nope. There’s another one. It’s a trilogy.”

Jaejoong groaned at this, “You owe me big time for this.” He said sternly. “Anything you want.” Yunho promised with a smile.

The 8 boys settled comfortably in a circle, on the floor of Jaehyun’s bedroom. Thy turned out the lights, only leaving a small light on, in case anyone needed to go to the bathroom. “Who wants to go first?” Ten whispered. “I will!” Johnny volunteered. Jaehyun handed the tall boy his flashlight, allowing him to hold the light under his face.

“Long ago, before our parents were born. Even before our grandparents were born. There was a brave horseman. He was very strong and defeated his enemies by cutting their heads off with his sword. He always won all his fights and battles. Some people say that he was crazy and that he even enjoyed killing his enemies. One Halloween night he was mysteriously killed, and his head was cut off. His body was buried in the middle nowhere, where no one could find it.” Johnny began.

“However, the horseman could not rest peacefully in his sleep until he got vengeance on his killers. So, every Halloween night his ghost roams around on his horse in search of his killer and head. Sometimes he mistakens a pumpkin as a head and wears it for a head when he finds one. Legend has it, that if you get in his way you either have to give him a pumpkin or…. give him your head!”

Taeyong screamed at the sudden burst, gripping onto Jaehyun’s arm. Johnny smiled, pleased with himself. Ten folded his arms, “That’s not how that story goes.” He was unimpressed. “Yes, it is.” Johnny argued. “Whatever.” Ten brushed off, not convinced.

“I have a story.” Kyungsoo raised his hand enthusiastically. “And it’s better than yours.” Johnny scoffed at this, “No it’s not.” He handed the elder the flashlight. Kyungsoo grinned cynically, looking at everyone.

“There was once a family of four people. A mom. A dad. A brother. And a sister. They all had to move to the opposite side of the country because the dad got a new job. Their new home was a huge super old mansion on a hill far away from everyone.” He began.

“Everyone loved the house, except for the sister. The sister thought the house was creepy and scary. She was so scared that she slept in her parents’ room every night.” Taeyong shivered closer to Jaehyun.

“One night a loud knocking sound was heard on the basement door. The sister was too scared to check it out, so she stayed in her parents’ room. But the brother went to see what the knocking was. So, he went down to the basement and opened the door.” “No, no, no…don’t go in~.” Taeyong whimpered.

“The next morning, after the mom and dad went to work, the sister went to the brother’s room to wake him up for school. But he wasn’t there. At that moment, the sister heard knocking from the basement again. But this time it sounded like two people knocking.”

“Oh no~…” Taeyong whispered. Jongin, Johnny, Ten, Daehyun, and Youngjae listened intently. “The sister got scared and was going to run out the house when she heard her brother’s voice call her name. She followed his voice until she was standing in front of the basement.” Kyungsoo continued.

“She could hear her brother’s voice on the other side of the door. ‘Sister turn on the light. I can’t see. Help me, please. Help me, so we can play.’ The sister wanted to helper her brother, so she opened the door. It was dark. She couldn’t see anything. ‘Brother?’ She stepped into the basement to look for a light switch. ‘Brother?’ She walked deeper into the basement, but then, the basement door shut behind her!” Kyungsoo jumped.

“Wh-What happened next?” Jongin asked hesitantly. “Nothing.” Kyungsoo grinned at the younger. “They were never seen again.”

Jongin, Johnny, and Ten all shivered at this. “I’m never going in my basement again.” Jonny murmured. “I told you mine was better.” Kyungsoo grinned proudly.

“Who’s next?” Youngjae asked, excited for more stories. “I-I will.” Taeyong raised his hand.

Everyone was surprised, but Kyungsoo handed him the flashlight anyway. Taeyong held the light with trembling hands. “There was once a boy and a girl, who was sent to the woods by their mother. They walked through the woods until sunset, before heading home. But they were lost. They didn’t know how to get home.” He began.

“They walked throughout the woods when they found a pretty house. They were so hungry and tired that they went into the house without knocking. They were surprised when they saw that the inside was made of candy! They ate all the candy because they were super hungry. But the candy was so good that they couldn’t stop eating until they were fat. Then an old lady snuck up behind them and pushed them into her large oven where she cooked them and ate them!”

The boys were silent, recognizing the story of Hansel. and Gretel. “That’s a great story Tae.” Jaehyun encouraged. “Yeah. I liked that story too. At least they got to eat a bunch of candy.” Daehyun agreed. Taeyong couldn’t help the smile that grew on his lips from the praise. “I got a story.” Daehyun said.

Taeyong handed him the light. “Now, this is a true story. And nothing is scarier than a true story.” He began. “This happened to me earlier this year.” Jaehyun raised an eyebrow at this.

“I won a big bag of candy at the arcade earlier this year. Instead of eating it right away, I decided to save it for a special occasion. So, before I went to bed, I placed it in a safe place in the pantry. But that night I couldn’t sleep. I had a bad feeling in my tummy. Finally, I woke up in the middle of the night to check on my candy. But when I opened the pantry it wasn’t there! My dad was sitting at the kitchen table eating my candy! And he ate all the good ones!” Daehyun finished his story with much fright.

Youngjae, Jaehyun, Jongin, and Kyungsoo looked at him unimpressed. “Oh~, that is scary.” Taeyong said. Johnny and Ten nodded in agreement.

“Hey, didn’t you leave your candy downstairs too?” Jongin pointed out, seeing that Daehyun was the only one without his bucket. Daehyun’s eyes widened. “Oh no!” He jumped to his feet and ran out the room. The others quickly followed him down the stairs.

Daehyun froze in horror, his story coming true again. “A-Appa~!”

Yunho and Jaejoong froze, staring at the 8 boys in front of them. Jaejoong quickly shoved the evidence away from him toward Yunho. “yah! Why are you eating Daehyun’s candy again? I told you not too.” He scolded.

Yunho was caught by surprise at his husband’s sudden betrayal. “Appa~…” Daehyun groaned. The boys laughed and crowded the table for a late-night snack. “I’ll share my candy with you Dae.” Youngjae offered. Daehyun’s face lit up at the offer. “Thank you Jaejae~. I bet your candy tastes better too.” He cooed, hugging the younger.

Jaejoong smiled, witnessing the scene. It was obvious that his son had a crush on the younger boy. Yunho smirked at Jaejoong witnessing the same thing. Jaejoong stole back one of the chocolate candies. “You still owe me.” He reminded. “I know~. I didn’t forget.”
