The first time Na Haeun felt her soulmate, it felt like she was punched in the gut. She remembered waking up one night and feeling as though all of the oxygen in her lungs were suddenly out, and it was reduced to a dull ache for the next two weeks. All that remained was a faint bruise. Her dad said that it was probably because her soulmate was a delinquent who got punched in the chest, and as she grew up, she was beginning to believe that.

Except more extreme in that she was beginning to believe that he was a gang member.

Ever since she was a little girl, her dad used to tell her at the prime age of sixteen, people could begin to feel their soulmates’ emotions until they met in person. Haeun had grown up watching her parents dote on each other, but all the Disney moves she watched led to her dreaming quite a bit about her future.

Haeun dreamed of meeting her prince who’d sweep her off her feet, and they would get married and live happily ever after. She imagined that when she turned sixteen, she would be able to feel the love her soulmate has for her, and hopefully, he would feel her love as well.

What she didn’t know at the time, however, was that when her dad said “feel their soulmates’ emotions,” he meant “feel their pain”. 

Years later, Haeun is a 27 year old criminal defense lawyer, and it wasn't enough that she was dealing with her soulmate who couldn't stop getting hurt, but she also had to deal with an arrogant detective who simply couldn't live without bothering her everytime he saw her.

It became a habit when she was young to hit her head against the wall in the bathroom in retaliation to all the pain and suffering. She still does it. On purpose. Simply because she knows her soulmate will feel the pain as well. It was fine to give herself a headache if he got one too. Especially considering he was giving her a headache on a daily basis with the stupid stunts he was pulling.
