The Upturned Lips

Description

For her, the nine of them were everything; they were her salvation, her world. They had saved her from herself, and had given her a new lease on life. However, when they were no longer nine, her world crumbled just seeing the pain they had to go through.

She knew what the media and the company had fed the fans were not the truth. Except for being a little bit more desperate, she also wanted the verity of everything that had transpired, just like the others.

So she sought for it.

And she sought for the Devil.

Foreword

"Get out." The woman throws a bag onto the floor, the bag landing with a thud in front of me. "I already packed your clothes into the bag. There is also a wallet with some money in it. It should last you for a week or so." She stares at me, her eyes cold and unfeeling, as if she is looking at a bug and not her niece. "Your stay here is long past its deadline."

I stare at the bag in front of me and let out a smile. I know that I don't belong. Don't belong where exactly, that question need not be answered; after all, this version of me should not have been born in this world to begin with.

"What are you smiling at, you creepy child? Always smiling...I knew something was wrong with you. That's why my brother and sister-in-law drove themselves to death, isn't it?" My aunt chuckles, her voice low and her expression darkens. "Shame that they weren't successful in bringing an abomination such as yourself together with them."

An abomination... Perhaps I am one. Choosing to be born again and choosing to alter the events to come, I am indeed an abomination. Still, even with that, I will keep smiling.

"I have had enough of you. Don't you ever show yourself in front of me ever again." Perhaps as a parting gift, she shoves my shoulder hard enough to make me fall on the ground. She gives me a smile of her own. "This is the only way someone would be willing to touch you. You will never find happiness in this world." As if placing a curse on me, she says those final words before slamming the door of her apartment in front of my face.

I just lie there on the ground in all of my pathetic glory. It is indeed terrible for a child to be homeless, isn't it? At the very least, I will not be receiving marks on my body on a daily basis anymore so there is a silver lining in that.

I turn my head to look at my companion that is also lying on the floor—the bag. "I doubt that the wallet in your stomach has enough money in its stomach to provide a proper lodging for me."

To find a place for me to live in needs money. And to get the money, I need a job. Is there even any place that will accept a 14-year-old child as an employee here? To top it off, the fact that I am a girl in this time and age is not helping me as much.

Looking at the empty corridor of the 7th floor of the apartment building, I should probably get up before anybody is to witness my miserable self. It is about three in the morning, and nobody should be wandering these apartment corridors at this hour, but I do not want to risk it. If my aunt is to hear about anybody reporting about a bruised child sitting in front of her apartment door, she might just decide to hunt me down and end my worthless life.

I pick myself up from the ground together with my bag and trudge through the hallway, my black and blue bruises slowing me down.

I stop in front of the elevator doors and pushed the button to go down. Reflected onto the surface of the elevator doors is a tall girl armed with a blank expression.

"...It must have slipped off my face." I pull the corners of my mouth upwards. "I must smile. Only when I smile will everything be a little bit easier." I look at the elevator doors once more.

The girl reflected on the surface of the elevator doors is now smiling with her fingers lifting the corners of . However, her smile breaks and disappears as the doors open. I step forward into the elevator and the doors close.

The girl reappears, but this time, she no longer needs her fingers to etch a smile on her face.

Chapter 1: Ooo, nice very nice. Kinda reminds me of a isekai. It's got a isekai vibe to it. I like OC's personality and actions. She got a sharp mind, very determined, humble and wise. Looking forward for more.
