California, United States of America

Tiffany munched nonchalantly on her morning toast as she walked through the magical town of Cyprus Alley hidden away in Southern California. She watched with a relaxed manner as wizards and witches rushed about in their spring wear as she passed by familiar old shops containing wands, sweets, and potion ingredients.

She hadn’t been surrounded by magic in a long time and it calmed her. Her body buzzed with a sense of warmth that was not because of the high sun in the skies. If she were being truthful, she missed it.

Living with her non-magical family, Tiffany had restrained from using any magic whatsoever around them. She didn’t want to spook them with everything that they would never understand and couldn’t experience. Instead, she did everything the No-maj way. It was quite restraining at first, like only being able to use one hand when she had two perfectly working ones. However, she got used to it. Mostly.

At times, it was extremely frustrating, but if you asked Tiffany, she’d rather have her family than have magic. At least one option was less lonely.

She came to a stop at a small stand selling newspapers. Copies of today’s American Gazette stared back at her. Absentmindedly she scanned over the headlines. She’d been rather detached from the magical community lately - she found that the further she stayed away from all things magical, the easier it was to forget she was magical, and hence easier to pretend she was a No-maj - so she was far behind on any news. As she continued to browse half-heartedly, one headline caught her interest.

British Minister of Magic of Only Two Years, Augustine Wrigley, Found Dead in His Office.

Tiffany felt herself freeze at the news.

“It’s a shame, isn’t it? I thought he was a rather decent Minister. At least that’s what I heard.”

Tiffany looked up to see the old witch manning the newspaper stand smiling sympathetically down at her, having noticed her reaction to that particular headline. Tiffany gave her best shot at a smile but it felt awkward at best.

“Ah, yes,” she answered out of politeness. She hesitated before asking, “Do you know what happened exactly?”

The old lady shook her head before leaning in and whispering almost conspiratorially causing Tiffany to mirror her body actions. “They have no idea. No one knows. Apparently, there were no signs or evidence of what caused his death. They just found him one day, dead in his office.”

Tiffany shuddered at the idea. “Do you know who’s replacing him then?” Her eyes flickered to the old moving picture of the British Minister before looking back up.

“The Deputy Minister. Laxley,” the old lady informed her as she wrinkled her face in disgust. Tiffany eyed the reaction in confusion.

“Is he...not suitable?” she asked, clearly out of the loop from British wizarding politics. Though to be fair, she probably wouldn’t fare much better in American wizarding politics either and American muggle politics - now that was a headache of a mess if she’s ever seen one.

The old lady rolled her eyes. “That’s putting it lightly, darling. The man is bad news I tell you,” she stated sternly, making clear her disapproval of a wizard she probably never even met. “Britain could’ve literally chosen anyone else and they would’ve been a better choice, but alas,” the old woman sighed. “What’s done is done.”

Tiffany raised an eyebrow at the intense reaction. She’d never heard of this Laxley guy before. Tiffany eyed the newspaper in curiosity, pondering for only a moment before asking one last question.

“How much is it?” She held up the paper in question as she reached into her coat pocket hoping that she was carrying some spare Dragots or Sprinks.

“For you, pretty lady, only ten Sprinks,” the newspaper witch grinned warmly.

Tiffany nodded and brought out the coins in her wallet. She happened to just have enough to pay for the newspaper and handed over the money.

“Why the curiosity in British politics though, dear?” the witch couldn’t help but ask as she accepted the payment.

Tiffany tucked the newspaper under her arm and averted her eyes from the witch’s curious gaze. She knew the woman meant no harm. It was an honest question.

“Ah,” Tiffany murmured, trying to sound nonchalant. “I had attended school there once upon a time. It was a rather long time ago though.”

She then quickly walked away, not gracing the witch any time to give a response or continue the conversation.

Previously…

‘SEOHYUN IS THE NEW MINISTER OF MAGIC?’

London, Britain

“H-how?” Yuri stammered once the three of them were finally alone. Yuri couldn’t stop staring at the youngest. What in Merlin's name just happened? Did she hear correctly just now or had she lost her listening comprehension?

“So, the new Ministry of Magic, huh?” Taeyeon remarked amusedly though she was also extremely surprised at the news. Out of all the possible replacements for Laxley, Seohyun wasn’t even on Taeyeon’s list of people to consider. This appointment seemed like it came out of nowhere.

“Hello to the two of you too,” Seohyun nodded stiffly, always one for proper etiquette even in times of high tension. Though her face and posture were stern, Taeyeon could tell from her eyes that the girl was more amused than anything about their skipped over greetings.

She felt her gaze sweep in Seohyun’s appearance. The last time they’d seen each other in person was three years ago the summer after they graduated from Hogwarts. Though they still kept in touch, Seohyun was always too swept up in earning her Masters in potions to show up to any of their friendly gatherings, no matter how sparse they were given they were all very busy people now. She’d always have some excuse about needing to tend to a potion overnight of being in exotic places like Uagadou and not being able to leave.

Still, the woman looked the same as ever. The baby fat in the cheeks were still there even though the girl gave off a more mature look. Being a year younger than all of them, Seohyun looked very much like your typical twenty year old girl, though her eyes were belied years of experience and wisdom.

“What is going on? Why are you Minister of Magic?” Yuri couldn’t help but blurt out. Her curiosity was killing her.

Seohyun gave her friends a wry look. “It’s a long story,” she sighed, and Taeyeon noticed the distinctly dark circles under the girl’s eyes.

‘She must be having trouble keeping to her usually strict sleep schedule,’ Taeyeon thought. ‘I don’t blame her though. I don’t think anyone in this building has had a good night’s sleep in a while.’

“And I don’t really know what happened either,” Seohyun continued, already looking like she was carrying the weight of the British Wizarding community on her shoulders despite only having been appointed Minister a few hours ago. “But apparently Wrigley wrote in his will that if something were to happen to him while he was Minister, then I would be the one to succeed him. I don’t know the specifics but the position is rightfully mine.”

“Why would he give it to you?” Yuri asked, simply amazed at the events.

Seohyun shrugged. “Your guess is as good as mine,” she admitted. “I interned under him and Minister Granger during my time at Hogwarts as you both know. He must’ve been impressed with the work I did,“ she shrugged.

“That’s an understatement if he was willing to make you Minster just because of four summers worth of internships,” Yuri snorted at Seohyun’s understatement.

“I still can’t believe this. Minister of Magic. Wow,” Taeyeon whispered in awe mostly to herself as she stared at Seohyun like she were a stranger.

“Trust me,” Seohyun grimaced. “That makes two of us. They’re going to be holding a vote at the end of the year though, so potentially, I’m only standing in as Minister for the next six months.”

“Wait, this means you’re our boss now!” Yuri pointed out suddenly in realization. “Damn,” she cursed, snapping her fingers. How was she supposed to slack off at work now?

Seohyun gave her a dry look as if knowing exactly what was running through her mind. She opened , about to say something else when the Head of Magical Law Enforcement interrupted them.

“Minister Seo, if you would please,” Dongwan gestured towards a meeting room with his head. “The others are all ready.”

Seohyun nodded at the man before turning to look back at her friends.

“I have to go. The International Confederation of Wizards is holding an emergency meeting,” Seohyun explained with a small frown. “They are obviously not pleased with recent events and I need to be briefed.” Seohyun glanced between the two of them as she turned to leave.

“Don’t go anywhere. I don’t know how long this meeting will take but as soon as the meeting is over, I need to talk with you two,” she told in hushed tones before stalking away, her high heels clacking on the stone floor of the Ministry. She paused after a few steps and turned back around slightly shooting them a relaxed smile.

“It was nice seeing you guys again.” And then she continued on her way with Dongwan on her heels.

“Yes boss!” Yuri saluted to Seohyun’s leaving back. She then turned towards Taeyeon who looked like she was still trying to process everything just like she was. “What do you think she wants to talk to us about?”

Taeyeon glanced at her. “Beats me,” she shrugged with a sigh before peering curiously at the the door Seohyun and her father just disappeared behind. “But I doubt anything could surprise me anymore.”

Yuri grunted, barking out a short laugh. “I feel like the surprises have just begun,” she remarked with a wry grin. Ever since she’d been appointed a fully fledged auror, things had been anything but boring.

“I can’t believe miss stuck up, prim and proper, know-it-all is the Minister of Magic,” Yuri couldn’t help but comment, thinking back to their school days. “Remember when she used to be a frightened little thing that was scared of breaking school rules and being expelled?”

Taeyeon snorted. They’d all really grown up a lot.

Seohyun sat in a room with the projections of all of the other wizarding leaders sitting at the table. Sitting at the head of the table was none other than Babajide Akingbade, Uagadou graduate and current Supreme Mugwump of the Confederation.

“Tingz are getting out of hand,” Valentin Bonaccord stated. The French delegate was a chiseled wizard, well minded, as well as a descendant of Pierre Bonaccord, the first ever Supreme Mugwump of the Confederation.

“We’re having a rough time over here, as well,” Clarence Oscar, American delegate added.

Seohyun stayed quiet as the other delegates aired their grievances. She took a moment to just take in all the wizards and witches in the room. This was arguably the world’s most powerful gathering of wizards and witches and each delegate had years of experience up their sleeves as well as a string of notable accomplishments and titles.

And here Seohyun sat, between the representatives from Spain and France, a mere twenty year old girl fresh out of her master’s studies and only three hours into her official appointment as the head of one of the most prominent wizarding societies in the world.

If there was ever a moment for Seohyun to feel inadequate, it was this moment right here. However, she knew she could not afford to shy away. She had a whole nation of people depending on her.

“I have an idea,” she found herself suddenly speaking, not even aware she was talking until she heard her own voice chime into the mess of the discussion.

Suddenly, everyone quieted and turned to look at her. Seohyun easily made out the judgement and skepticalness in their eyes as if they were all just amusing her like she were a child.

‘Let’s see what the newbie has to say,’ they all seemed to say.

Unfortunately for them, this was a look Seohyun was well acquainted with. All her life, people would give her this exact
