Chapter 4

Gimhae  was a small city in South Gyeongsan, Busan. It was only September so the weather was still pretty warm however the region was know for rainfalls quite often. As Jiyong made his way to the school, he noticed that most of the kids around here went to this school and to the contrary of what he thought, the city held quite a lot of habitants, around ten thousand people, which only made the mission harder. The detective sighed as he thought once again about his mission. He just had to find the Park Sandara’s kid and then he would find her easily and convince her to come to Seoul so that she would witness against her ex-husband Song Mino. Everything was going to be okay. They were only six-year-old kids after all.

As Kwon Jiyong made his way towards the Elementary school after parking his car, he found the principal’s office pretty easily. After giving his name to the secretary desk, he took a sit next to a kid on the bench that was in front of the office. It was only nine a.m and some kid was already in trouble. Kwon Jiyong couldn’t help but tilt his head a little to look down at the kid sitting next to him.

He never really had a thing with kids; he never knew how to talk to them. Basically, Kwon Jiyong was awkward around them. He was for sure more at ease when he was dealing with drug traffickers and thieves.

“Mattew… I sent you to the principal’s office because you punched Jennie.” Said a woman that Kwon Jiyong easily recognized as a teacher.

“But…” The kid tried to argue.

“Yes I know. She poisoned your hamsters. She told me all about it and she is very sorry.” She quickly turned her head to her right, as she couldn’t suppress a smile because of the situation. The detective couldn’t help but widen his eyes as he heard the conversation between the child and the teacher. It clearly made no sense.

He looked down at the woman who was kneeled in front of the little boy, trying to comfort him. A beautiful brunette with shoulder hair length tucked behind her hears and mesmerizing brown eyes. As she made eye contact with the other adult in the room, Kwon Jiyong, she smiled at him. The woman was looking damn fine in her purple woolen dress that fitted perfectly against her body as a big belt gave some more definition to her hips. Kwon Jiyong awkwardly smiled back before taking his eyes off her and looking straight in front of him.

“But you shouldn’t punch people.” She told the kid, this time with a more serious look on her face.

“But she…”

“Mr. Kwon, Miss Kim will see you now.” Said the secretary as she came toward him.

Kwon Jiyong quickly got up from the wooden bench and walked towards the principal’s office, glancing one last time at the teacher that was still smiling at him with a curious look on her face. She had never seen him around here before, he might be here as a surrogate.

As he entered in the principal’s office, he saw an old lady sat behind her desk with her hands linked under her chin as she waited for him to take a seat.

“Can I help you?”

“I’m Kwon Jiyong, your new kindergarten teacher.”

“We were expecting Miss Lee.” She said as she squinted her eyes and frowned her eyebrows.

“There’s been a change of plan.”

The principal looked at him again before sighing and getting up, moving around her desk.

“Four weeks into the new semester… my superintendent told me I had to replace Mrs. Choi, a kindergarten teacher of 25 years’ experience, with an undercover police officer… and he wouldn’t even tell me why.”

Jiyong looked at her with his usual pokerfaced expression. There was no way he was telling her anything.

“I don’t suppose you would do me the courtesy of filling me in.”

“I can’t do that.” He simply replied.

“Oh… you can’t do that…” The principal said with no much surprise on her face. She then got closer to Jiyong and hit him on his chest with her finger. “I’ll be watching you.”

Jiyong silently gasped; this principal definitely was intimidating. How such an old and embittered woman could be the principal of an elementary school?

“All I have to do is tell the parents that you’re with the police and they’ll take their kids out of this school so fast… we would have to close.” She said as she kept on hitting the detective's chest. “And don’t you think I won’t if I feel my children are in any danger.”

“They are not in danger.” Kwon Jiyong bluntly assured her.

God this old lady was intimidating; Jiyong even thought she could fit in the police forces despite the fact that she was so tiny. She then opened the door of her office; this time there was nobody in the corridor. The previous teacher must have gone back to her class, understanding that the principal was going to be busy for a while.

The principal led Jiyong to his class as they passed by several doors where other children were having classes. This was big school for such a small city, Jiyong thought.

“I assume you have some teaching experience.” She asked, less threatening as she stopped in front of a door.

“They wouldn’t have sent me otherwise.” He replied as genuinely as he could.

They looked at each other for a few seconds as she tried to see if the man in front of her was trustworthy and Jiyong looked back at her trying to seem as genuine as possible. This principal was not playing.

“Just wait here a minute.” She ended up saying at she turned back towards the door of the classroom.

As principal Kim was about to open the door, Kwon Jiyong could already hear the children screaming and running from the other side of the wall. These punks were loud and the detective couldn’t help but take a little peek inside the classroom as the principal entered inside and started turning on and off the room’s light. Kwon Jiyong couldn’t help but frown as he wondered what the hell she was doing.

“Everybody sit down on the carpet!” She yelled as she kept on turning the light on and off. The kids kept screaming and talked loudly as they slowly went to sit on the carpet just like the principal asked. She waited for the kids to stop talking before continuing. “Good morning everyone.”

“Good morning Miss Kim.” They all replied bored.

“Your teacher, Mrs. Choi had to go on an important trip.”

As Kwon Jiyong stayed outsite of the room, he started sweating a bit. He had never done such a thing and he was realizing that maybe it was going to be harder than he thought.

“Where’d she go?” One of the children asked.

“That doesn’t matter.” The principal said.

“Did she die?” Another kid asked bluntly.

“No, Lowell. She went to see someone.”

“Did they die?” The kid asked again.

“No, Lowell!”

As Jiyong listened from the other side of the door, he couldn’t help but to widened his eyes at the questions. Since when did six year-old kids asked that kind of questions?

“Everyone dies you know.” Lowell added as the principal sighed and shrugged off what she had just heard.

“Now, until Mrs. Choi comes back… we have someone special to help. This is Mr. Kwon. Your new kindergarten teacher.”

As she introduced him, Jiyong walked slowly inside and started to inspect the room and the children as if they were the number one enemies in a war zone. As soon as the children saw him coming inside, they all lifted their head up to look at the tall man’s face. Jiyong felt big inside a room of small children and he gave off an intimidating aura. As he looked down at the children’s innocent face, Jiyong didn’t know what to do. The tough man was low-key panicking on the inside.

“Now, let’s everybody say ‘Good morning Mr. Kwon’” The principal stated, and the children complied right after.

“Good morning.” Jiyong smiled a bit thinking that at least they were well educated. However, his smile turned out being kind of awkward.

“They are all yours.” The principal said as she squeezed his shoulder. “I’ll be watching you.” She said for the second time since they met, before exiting the room and closing the door behind her.

Jiyong looked back at the crowd of children sitted on the carpet in front of him. He took a deep breath before talking. “Hi. How are you?” He said as gently as possible. But no kids replied as they kept looking up at him in silence. The detective raised his brows a bit before speaking again. “I’m very happy to be here.”

The children stayed silent again. Were they like dogs? Maybe they could feel when someone was scared of them or didn’t like them, Jiyong thought.

The new teacher started pacing around in front the kids as he kept doing his talk. “First, I’d like to get to know you.” He said as he leant against the piece of furniture behind him. Unfortunately, the piece of furniture was a piano and a loud and deep sound came out of it as Jiyong sat on it, making all the children in the room laugh loudly.

“Ha.Ha.Ha.” Jiyong angrily imitated them as he got up front the piano. These little punks were already making fun of him. “QUIET!” He then yelled, as the kids started fidgeting a bit, getting scarred of the man in front of them. Their new teacher had no patience for sure. “I am going to ask you a bunch of question… And I want to have them answered quickly.”

The children slowly nodded, not wanting the make their teacher angrier.

“How many of you wer
