they were like church mice

Description

In a world where nothing is for free, crime had overtaken the once blissful peace of tiny towns. Paranoia was vivid in the mind of each and every parent as they struggled to keep their children safe - and many of them failed.

But some say that love will find a way, that as long as one prays each and every night, wishes will come true.

And one day, those broken little souls of the lost will return home.

Foreword

The tiny boy clung to his mother's back, sleepy eyes staring ahead. It was cold, so much that he was shivering against her coat-clad body: but it was still not time for them to head home. Even the child understood that while it was still bright out, the sun shining even in the midst of winter, it was time for work. But he wanted nothing more than to be huddle under the thin little blanket he had and doze off: maybe after drinking some warm milk.

For that, however, momma had to earn money. And that did not grow on trees although sometimes it was green! It was too chilly outside to allow himself to drift off, so he busied himself with looking around.

As always, there were tons of people walking around, many of them casting a glance at the skinny children that were gathered around the small posse of woman. Jiminnie and Taetae were big enough to walk on their own, which was sometimes very funny when they would run off to play - or so the youngest thought. He did not understand much that went on in his daily life, only that his brothers were big and they could earn money like his momma could.

He was still too young to do so, so he remained tied onto her back, clutching her neck with his thin arms.

"Please, sir... You can see that my child is so. so thin..." his momma said again, whispering the same words as always. That was true - but the little one did not quite comprehend the horror in the tall man's eyes when he glanced down at him.

"Jungkook.." he heard his name being called - it was what Minnie and Taetae called him, not momma, because momma did not like to call him by any name - and he lifted his head, dark eyes tired and so, so confused.

AN:

So, this one is going to be a heavy one. It's partially to cope with what I've seen while travelling / watching documentaries about the places I have seen. I debated long and hard with myself on who the characters should be and decided to stick with BTS and maybe (not just maybe really) others, mostly because I don't even know.

NOTES: WHILE A LOT OF THIS PIECE IS BASED ON THINGS THAT ACTUALLY DO HAPPEN IN REAL LIFE I am not saying that x or y place is exactly like this, (unfortunately a lot of places have nasty stuff happening, which is why I decided for the setting to be more of a dystopian  fictional universe.

I think (obviously) that nasty stuff should never happen - not to adults or children for that matter. But poverty is an incredible driving force (and so is money)

aaaand the title does not make complete sense in English but I decided to stick to my Hungarian roots for once (does this actually exist in English though?), Basically, church mice are apparently very poor.

AND THEN THE WARNINGS: A part of this involves children living on the streets, mentions kidnapping, usage of drugs (medication, alcohol and cigarettes), abuse, injuries, illnesses, mention of character death, and just angst.

it also contains fluff and happiness, but they'll have to work for it. I'll try to keep it realistic however, at least as much as my heart can bear with it.
