Turoq

The Strongest Bond

“Why did you come here?” Jongin asked softly, after he and Sehun had finished every single piece of his emergency chocolate supplies. Well, he did have one more hiding place, but that chocolate was extra special, even more than the Belgian chocolate his father had brought him. It was his mother's favorite chocolate. It was just between him and her. Whenever he missed her so much he couldn't breathe, he would have a piece of her favorite chocolate, bringing him just a tiny bit closer to her. Close enough to be able to breathe again.

“Because I needed help, my spaceship crashed, remember?” Sehun said surprised, like he couldn't believe how bad Jongin's memory was.

“Hahh.. no I mean, why did you come to Earth?” Jongin chuckled.

“Oh. I never meant to come here, my spaceship malfunctioned and this was the closest planet with an acceptable atmosphere, so the pod crashed here, all on its own.” Sehun shrugged.

“Is Exor far from here?”.

“Yeah.”.

“Aren't you homesick?” Jongin wondered.

“Mmm.. kind of...like I was, a lot, because I hate being alone.. but now, I kind of like it here.” Sehun scrunched his nose and chuckled. His laugh tickled Jongin's insides, making him want to laugh too, but he resisted the urge.

“Won't your family be looking for you?” Jongin asked, concerned. He couldn't imagine being so far from home, all alone.

“No. I wasn't going home. They won't expect me back for a while.” Sehun frowned.

“Where were you going then?” Jongin sat up in his chair, excited to hear more about what was out there, beyond the horizon.

“Are you sure you don't have any more chocolate? I can still smell chocolate.” Sehun sniffed the air, distracted, his eyes full of longing. Ah. He was a goner. Already a junkie. But Jongin's mom's chocolates weren't even hidden in this room, and they were all wrapped up nicely, how could he smell them from here?

Jongin shook his head. There was no way he was going to give him that. They could just go buy some more tomorrow.

“You know, chocolate is made from plant corpses.” Jongin .

“Whatever. Bring on the corpses! I'm a barbarian now!” Sehun giggled heartily.

“But if you are a whole other species from far, far away, how do you look so human?” Jongin peered his eyes skeptically.

“How do you look so much like an Exorian?” Sehun stuck his tongue out at him, snickering like an idiot. “But I'm still young though, I still have two or three growth spurts left, when I'm all grown I'll probably be around 6 gor.” he smirked.

“What is a gor?” Jongin asked.

“Oh, it's like... this much?” Sehun held his hands out, measuring about half a meter.

“Woah! You're going to be three meters tall?!?!” he gasped. That was insanely tall. He couldn't even visualize it.

“Mhm.” Sehun nodded proudly, like he had some control over how tall his species was.

“But where were you going, when you crashed?” Jongin asked again, not giving up. He was too curious. There was something Sehun wasn't telling him.

“It's my turoq.” a sad shadow flew over Sehun's face.

“Your what?”.

“Mm... how to explain. Okay, so... A million sunyears ago, our forefather, Exor, was chased away from the kingdom of the gods, betrayed by his best friend and lover. He came to our solar system with nothing. He was so heartbroken and lonely, that he split into two persons so he would have company. But one could not survive without the other.” Sehun began dramatically.

“They had many children together, and to make sure his children would never have to suffer like he had suffered, he forbade them to lie. Without lies there couldn't be betrayal. Eventually one of Exor's halves died, and the other followed. And so, the Exorians were born.” he continued, in total storytelling mode.

“We have a festival every five sunyears to celebrate our creators, the two halves of Exor. But just like Exor, Exorians cannot survive on their own. Exor's loneliness lives within us, and if we don't find our other half, we die from it. As time passed, the people of Exor grew in numbers, so much so that there was no more space, so some moved to the next planet, and the next and the next, and now we are spread all through the Exor solar system, as well as the neighboring solar system.”.

“The problem is, that your other half can be born on any of those planets, and you have no idea where. So when an Exorian has seen 90 sunyears, he goes on his turoq. That's like, his mission to find his other half. You have to go alone, and you have to visit each and every planet until you find your match.” Sehun let out a deep sigh.

“Ah! Like searching for your soulmate!” Jongin exclaimed, startling himself with the loudness of his own voice. He had been so engrossed in Sehun's story. “Wow, that's romantic.” he sighed.

“It's a lot of work.” Sehun grunted, like he wasn't too excited about it.

“But Earth is off limits. It's forbidden to come here. First of all turoq is not a vacation, so we're only supposed to focus on the search, because it's vital to our survival, and so we're only allowed to go to planets inhabited by our own kind, and are forbidden from taking a joyride through the galaxy. Which I think is total bull, why can't we do both? Why not have some fun and see what space has to offer while we're at it? There are so many pretty things in the universe.. like you.” Sehun smiled his crooked smile at him.

Jongin could feel his cheeks heat up. What a random thing to say. Of all the pretty things in the universe, different planets with different wonders, Sehun chose to mention him as an example. Ah, Sehun was so weird, Jongin thought, trying to make light of it, but he could feel himself swooning. Rats.

“And also, we're forbidden to visit such underdeveloped planets, like Earth, with barbarians that still think they are the only ones in the universe and can barely travel outside their own planet.” Sehun snorted, like he thought it was cute how much of a third world planet Earth was. Like it was still in its infancy.

“Hmm, come to think of it, they never told us about the power we have over you, and that we're dangerous to you and can accidentally kill you with just our touch. Maybe that's also why it's forbidden.” Sehun nodded to himself like he was having an epiphany.

“Wait, so if your soulmate is born on the same planet you're born on, what happens then?” Jongin wondered.

“Oh, they're so lucky! They don't have to do anything..” Sehun sighed with envy. “At the creation festival, all those of age who are not bonded yet, come together and see if they can find their other half. Some do. Some don't. I didn't.” he pouted.

“So does everyone have a soulmate out there, is there no one who goes unpaired?” Jongin had spotted a flaw in the system.

“When you are born, your other half is also born.” Sehun explained.

“And what if your other half dies before you?” Jongin pushed.

“Then you die too.” Sehun said matter-of-factly.

“Huh. Brutal.” Jongin gaped.

“Are none of the planets mixed with other races as well?” Jongin asked, not able to stop the flood of questions he had.

“Many of them are.” Sehun nodded.

“But it has to be your species right, you can't bond with another race then?” Jongin realized his weird little crush was already doomed. Maybe just as well.

“Uhm... I don't think so. But there is a myth, kind of like a children's story, where an Exorian got distracted on his turoq and visited a planet not unlike this one, against the rules, and fell in love with a barbarian and bonded with him. It was forbidden, and so he was exiled from Exor, but he didn't care, because he loved the barbarian so much that he didn't need anything else. But the barbarian was fickle, and changed his mind, falling in love with someone else. It broke the Exorians' heart. As in, his heart actually broke into two, because once Exorians are bonded with their other half, the two become one, and they function as one being. And so he withered and died from loneliness. So yeah, that's at least not recommended.” Sehun bit his lower lip.

“Wow. Intense.” Jongin felt like he had been slapped in the face, deciding it was best to kill this crush of his before it even began. And he had been worried that they were both guys. That was the least of their problems. No. Nothing could ever happen between them. He convinced himself that it hadn't been a crush, but just simple curiosity.

“How do you know when you've met your soulmate? I mean how do you recognize that it's really the right person?” Jongin couldn't help but ask. There had to be some way of telling.

“A mark appears on my forehead. Right here.” Sehun pointed at the middle of his forehead.

There was nothing there.
