LISA

I moved to the back of the bus and took a seat. Let out a long sigh. Jennie moved into the seat across from me and grinned.

“Come on. You cant tell me you’re tired. You just had one match and it wasn’t even a challenge!”

I stuck my tongue out at my best friend. “Easy for you to say. You make it look effortless out there on the court!”

“What can I say? I’m blessed with natural talent,” Jennie said.

She stretched and let out a yawn and I found myself distracted by the show. I’d always thought Jennie was beautiful, an awkward thing to think about my best friend, but tonight she was looking very nice in her tight tennis dress.

Getting to see all sorts of girls in tight dresses was one of the perks of being on the team. Getting to see Jennie in one of those dresses was one of the reasons I stayed on the team.

Mostly I stayed on the team because I was damn good at tennis, but Jennie was a definite perk too.

It was also a damn good thing our matches were during the week. If they did it on Friday nights neither one of us would be able to take part considering that was football night which meant Jennie was down on the field cheering and I was up in the stands doing my band geek thing.

Then again I guess it wasn’t much of a surprise. In our state high school football ruled, and all the other sports got out of the way.

And of course tonight was the exception that proved the rule. A full Saturday of matches at a big invitational. Which mostly meant a bunch of sitting around while we waited for our match.

Not that I minded sitting around with Jennie.

She finished stretching and I quickly turned my eyes away from her. I might enjoy looking at my best friend, but I wasn’t exactly comfortable telling her about the massive torch I carried for her. It was sort of an awkward conversation to tell someone that they were the entire reason you realized you were gay.

Yeah, really awkward. The sort of awkward I didn’t ever want to deal with.

More people moved to the back of the bus and that gave me a good excuse to look away. Jisoo. Chaeng. Joy. Bobby.

I rolled my eyes. Bobby looked down at me and flashed a smile that would probably be winning if not for the fact that I wasn’t into guys at all. Plenty of other girls on the team seemed to have it bad for our managers, though, and so that’s why he always got to sit near the back with the senior girls even though he was only a junior.

I felt bad for the guy. He’d recently broken up with his girlfriend because of some rumor. Probably started by gossip queen Joy, but no one could prove it. That didn’t stop him from shooting her a dirty glance.

Sungjae came up right behind Bobby, but he didn’t look at me. He glanced at Jennie and then continued right on. It was well known he had the hots for the gossip queen and that was a big part of the reason why he was even managing the team. Again I could see where he was cute enough, but he wasn’t my cup of tea since he didn’t have the right equipment.

I leaned back in the uncomfortable plastic seat and closed my eyes. I knew I wasn’t going to get any rest, but I wanted to at least try and relax. Not that it was really possible.

I hated riding school buses. Athletics were the only time I found myself on the things ever since I got my license.

Whispering and giggling behind me made it even more difficult to concentrate on getting some rest. Darn it. I knew what that whispering and giggling meant, and I knew I was probably going to get dragged in again even if I didn’t want to.

“Hey Lisa, you awake?” Jisoo hissed.

The bus rocked around me. It was a pleasant sensation. Almost hypnotic. I could almost think that I’d be able to get some sleep if it wasn’t for the giggling and someone slamming their knee against the seat behind me.

I thought about pretending to stay asleep, but I’d be distracted by what they were doing anyways so I figured why not join in? At least it would gain me some closet cred.

I opened one eye. Looked up to see Jisoo smiling down at me.

“What’s going on?” I asked.

“You know exactly what’s going on Lisa,” Jisoo giggled. “It’s time, now meet in the middle.”

I sighed. It wasn’t too late to pretend to go back to sleep, but now that they knew I was awake they wouldn’t stop badgering me. There was nothing for it but to meet in the middle and hope the game didn’t last too long tonight or I didn’t have to pretend to be into kissing one of our managers.

I scooted to the part of my seat facing the center aisle. I cast a quick glance up to the bus driver, but he had his eyes on the road.

It was dark outside and that meant the back of the bus was bathed in darkness with only the steady red glow from the emergency light over the rear exit to provide illumination.

It was eerie. It was the perfect place for people to get up to no good. Like a quick back of the bus game of…

“Truth or dare,” Joy said, trying to hold back a giggle.

It was a good thing we had old Mr. Talbot driving the bus tonight. He was so hard of hearing that he never yelled at anyone, and he certainly never realized what was going on under his nose. There were other drivers who were more on the ball, but they weren’t driving us tonight.

“Keep it down Joy,” Jennie said. “One of the coaches will hear you.”

Yeah, the coaches were always a danger. Not a huge one, they were usually busy enough babysitting the underclassmen, but one of them coming back to check on things was always a possibility.
