Secrets

Artificial Soul

“I gotta get out of here!”~A woman in a hospital robe mumbled to herself as she stumbled out of a darkened warehouse. The cold air nipped at her exposed skin when she ran towards the inner city. She seemed to be in an insurmountable amount of pain as she limped her way to the closest hospital. Momo stares at the woman from afar with a look of dissatisfaction. She flips open her phone and quickly makes a call.

“Boss, the subject escaped”~Momo blurted out as the call connected

“Nothing to worry about she’ll expire soon anyway”~The woman in white stated from the other side of the phone

“Affirmative, I’m returning”~Momo said sternly

“Momo? What happened to that SLR we sent out?”~The woman in white asked coyly making Momo grit her teeth

“The SLR was destroyed by Detective Byul’s SLR”~Momo said making the woman sigh

“Well OK then, Byul is going to make this hard isn't she? Remember to terminate that site”~The woman in white said hanging up the phone.

[At SM Hospital]

The pained woman from earlier busts through the emergency room door clutching her chest in pain. She pleads with a nurse for help, staggering as her heart beat with more intensity.

“Hello I’m Nurse Yeri, how can I help you”~Yeri said to the woman

“My name is Rosè! Help I need a doctor this instant!”~ Rosè screamed clutching her chest

“I’ll get a doctor just wait here one......”~Yeri said as Rosè pulled out a gun pointing it at her

“No! I need..... I don't want to hurt anyone. Take me to the surgery room now please!.”~ Rosè said as security synths surrounded her

“M’am , just take it easy.”~Yeri calmly said trying to defuse the situation

“I need to be put on life support. I need a cardiovascular surgeon. Now!”~ Rosè said as she felt her chest pain pulse harder

“If you just put down the gun, tell me what's going...”~Yeri nervously spoke

“I need a single isomer anesthetic and a heart-lung bypass machine. You have one on the second floor.”~ Rosè

“I can do that but If you just put the gun down...”~Yeri requested as Rosè’s eyes widen

“You are not listening! I'm sorry. [gasping] They killed me. They killed me........”~ Rosè said as she felt the seething pain dissipate, but along with it she felt the coldness. The exertion brings on more breathlessness, like the air around her is devoid of oxygen. Her ribs heave up and down but no benefit comes. Dizziness. Rosè’s eyesight blurred, but not because tears were welling up. Everything became fuzzy; then she saw nothing at all. Her consciousness was floating through an empty space filled with a thick static. Throughout the inky space her heartbeats pounded loudly, echoing in her ears, alongside her fading pleas for help. Feeling in her body drained away until finally all was black and she collapsed.

[Later in the Night]

Byul and Solar were just on their regular nightly patrols.

“What the hell's wrong with this thing”~Byul smacking the monitor in her police cruiser

“Keep banging on it, hamster, that should make it work. Hmm. Now you just ran a red light.”~Solar said, making Byul finally look up

“It was yellow.”~Byul argued shaking her head slightly

“It was red.”~Solar begrudgingly retorted

“Yellow.”~Byul

“Red.”~Solar

“It was yellow.”~Byul said gritting her teeth

“Byul, it was red 2.4 seconds ago, would you like me to print out a photo replay?”~Solar condescendingly said

“Yeah, why don't you issue me a ticket while you're at it.”~Byul

“Okay. Already did.”~Solar stated, her eyes glowed blue

“Oh, come on, give me a break.”~Byul

“I'm here to protect you, Byul.”~Solar

“Invalidate the ticket.”~Byul commanded as Solar shook her head

“Insurance premiums are designed to keep people in check. I don't make the rules. I enforce them, and apparently I'm the only one who follows them.”~Solar

“You know what, you should break a rule or two now and then. Look good on you.”~Byul said when the cruiser’s radio sounded off. Hwasa’s voice echoed sternly as the two listened

“We have a 3-72, suspicious death. Generation Hospital.” Hwasa said as the girls looked at each other nodding in unison

“Detective Byul and Unit: Solar responding.”~Solar answered as Byul sped her driving up. They reached the hospital in no time as many other officers were quarantining the crime scene. They reached Rosè’s lifeless body as Byul began inspecting the area.

“Victim I.D.s as Park Chae Young, also known as Rosè. Cause of death, cardiac arrest. She was diagnosed three years ago with terminal congestive heart failure. She should've died then.”~Solar stated, reading from the report

“Well how was she healthy enough to barge in here earlier”~Byul questioned while inspecting Rosè’s gun

“She had a bio-mech heart. It's a pricey organ. Not as dependable as a perfect stem cell regrow but top of the line for a bio-mech heart.”~Solar replied scrolling through more of the report

“So why are we here?”~Byul asked

“Rosè died last year of a heart failure, She was even buried by her wife Lalisa Manoban.”~Solar said handing Byul the death certificate.

“Well that’s unsettling....”~Byul mumbled looking through the report.

“Lets try and trace her footsteps”~Solar suggested. Her eyes glowed blue as she inspected Rosè’s feet.

“Since when can you do that?”~Byul asked with a puzzled expression

“I’ve always been able to, I got a trail.”~Solar said as she hurried off out the hospital door. Byul quickly followed the synth girl with haste as the two girls made their way down the street.

“It seems she had fled across the road not caring for the traffic that screeched, swerved and honked around her.”~Solar noted as she looked at how erratic the footsteps were as she saw them.

“Almost like she was running away from someone”~Byul suggest as she made sure her gun was loaded. The streets that were once sleek new tarmac are now greyed by the bleaching of the sun. The road is a monochrome patchwork, each one lined with a shiny boarder of tar. Despite these fixes there are still cracks and the potholes grow larger with each passing year. Solar finally stopped at an alleyway as she tried looking for more footprints.

“Her direction before this alleyway is almost impossible to tell”~Solar said as she gestured to the wet concrete, which made her lose the trail.

“The trail’s gone?”~Byul

“Unfortunately yes, it ends here”~Solar stated, eyes returning to normal. The alleyway is darkness and the sour relics of a hundred pieces of trash and litter. As Byul walks between the walls, with Solar behind her, that are too high for her to bother seeking the almost black sky, she kicks the garbage with each stride. As she enters the alley, the lampposts cast her shadow like black over deepest charcoal; by midway it has faded out. From the buildings come noises, not so much as real sounds more creaks but all the louder for the absence of light and the quieter traffic. They reached a crossway intersection in the alley. Some led to other roads and dead ends but Byul noticed a big warehouse on the other side of the road to the left alleyway.

Byul had a hunch that the warehouse was their destination. She gently made her way towards the warehouse. Solar crossed at the lights and jogged softly to the fenced off area. The entire warehouse yard were almost silhouettes, the blackest of shadows. Byul scanned for movement. None. Then the wind died, the creaks ceased to make noise, even the rumble of traffic was absent. The air smelt as if it hadn't moved in years, festering like a stagnant pool of water. Byul pulled out her flashlight, and shone her beam inside, the only movement being the dust her feet had dislodged as she walked. Aside from an errant shaft of car headlights that burst through a crack in the boarded up window, it was the only light in the old warehouse. Besides that, the entire building was empty nothing to be seen just old dusty floors.

“D*mn, nothing here”~Byul mumbled looking around the barren warehouse. Solar looked around noticing a set of footprints that lead to nowhere into the center of the warehouse. Walking up to them Solar notices an echoed thump as she walked over the floor. Carefully placing her hand onto the floor she knocks on it like a door as a echo. She and Byul looked at each other and nodded. Byul and Solar reeled back and both swung down with a punch striking through the concrete panel shattering it. Removing the panel revealed a hole with a ladder leading down into a tunnel. As they descended, noises of machines sounded off around them. Byul and Solar swung around, pistols drawn, safety off. In this dimly lit laboratory nothing but the machines meets their first gaze. There is no movement and no odour of any kind. There are lights, but like the stars in a night sky they do little to lift the blackness, showing only the activity of the hardware - monitors of gigantic proportions with text that's too far away to make sense of. The feeling is more of being in a high tech cave the size of a stadium, black metallic roof above, black metallic floor below. Every footfall echoes around, not loudly, but enough to give away their position to anyone who happens to be concealed in here. For a moment Byul considers skirting around the edges, then she stops, while her heart speeds up to olympic sprinter rate. What she had thought to be a movie theatre sized screen is nothing of the sort.

“Whats wrong Byul.....”~Solar started saying but stopped just as Byul did.

In that suspended moment, a fraction of a second drawn out to infinity, Byul’s brain offers an explanation and yet rejects it simultaneously. This is the stuff of science fiction, of movies, of horror. The “screen” is a tank of murky blue liquid. Inside was a woman floating like a corpse. To the woman’s mouth runs a shiny metal tube as thick as a car exhaust but gently arced to insert into the . Byul in a sharp breath of the dust-less air, suddenly seeming so thick and step forwards for a better look. Solar placed her hand on the tank, looking at the woman.

“What is all this?......”~Solar stammered

“I dunno but.....”~Moonbyul said as a rustle of noise made them turn around. A metallic plate slides between Solar’s legs as she is pulled immediately to the ground locking her in a kneeling position. Byul tries smashing the plate while Solar struggles to stay up.

“It’s a..Magnetic......Mine......What....Is...”~Solar struggled to say

“Can you move at all?”~Byul asked trying to pry the mine from the floor. A shadowed figure slowly emerges from behind the tank of liquid they were looking at. It was a familiar short haired woman wielding a knife and she was charging towards them now.

“B......BYUL!!!!!!”~Solar screamed as Momo came from behind. Byul rolls away from a knife swiping Momo. The police woman tackles Momo down making her drop her knife. She kicks Byul off her as they both get into standing positions. They stare at each other as Solar kneels to the side, struggling against the magnetic mine.

“Why are you doing this!?”~Byul yelled, making Momo smirk

“Details details, is that all you ever care about detective?”~Momo said circling around Byul

The two brawlers ball their hands into fists and look directly into each other’s eyes. Faster on the draw, Byul charges forward first, aiming straight for Momo’s face. Momo stands her ground and lets her come, shifting herself to the side, avoiding her attack. Seeing her first opening, she throws out her fist for the first time. Byul turns around just in time and ducks under Momo’s strike just in time, countering with an uppercut to the face, knocking her back into the wall. Momo springboards off the wall and comes in assaulting Byul and they both start trading blows with each other. Momo’s strikes are more precise, but Byul displays stronger ones. They both go sprawling onto the ground and rise to their feet.

Byul flexes her robotic arm and she stands her ground as Momo charges forward for a second time. Instead of dodging, Byul simply blocks Momo’s attack with her arm. Though staggering back a few paces, Byul remains unabashed and retaliates with direct punch to Momo’s stomach, throwing her back an entire foot. Byul takes full advantage of the offensive, ready to strike her back down to the ground again. To her surprise, Momo has already recovered, hardly appearing to be dazed. She only just manages to dodge Byul’s punch by going into a roll, attempting to trip up her feet with an ankle sweep. Byul narrowly avoids the adapted tactic by bracing herself and following up with a downward ground slam, but Byul rolls to safety again. As she looks up Momo kicks her directly in the chest, making her roll away limply as she hit her head against one of the tables sending her into a daze. Momo takes this moment to go to a nearby crate and begin searching through it. Solar sees a stunned Byul trying to get up while Momo stands over her holding something.

“Still too nosy Byul”~Momo said tossing a bunch of grenades around the room as she begins to hurry out. Solar strains as she sees one of the grenades land next to Byul.

“NO!!!”~Solar screams as she pulls with all her strength. She screams pulling herself from the mine. Solar charges over towards the grenade. She picked it up, and threw it away while they both ducked as it exploded. All the grenades busted into a blazing stream of bright flame, swelling outwards, filling the room and escaping through the sections destroyed by the blast wave. Byul and Solar stood back up to see Momo gone and all the evidence in the laboratory destroyed.
