To Kill an Echo“It’s almost midnight. I’m sleepy,” Sora complains, “I can’t believe I’m doing this.”
I just grin. I help her load her duffle bag into the cab. We hail a cab from her place, since the plan was so sudden and Sora had to pack before we leave. Kim Sooyoung, her landlady, is waiting by the door, making sure we leave safely. We travel light. I couldn’t take my daggers with me because obviously, we’re going on a plane, so my engraved pocket knife should do. I wish really hard that we won’t run into the uglies on the plane.
I get into the cab first, then Sora. She shuts the cab door closed and rolls down the window to wave at the landlady as I tell the driver to drive us to the airport.
“Be safe!” shouts the older woman.
“Goodbye!” Sora shouts back. Then rolls the window up and turns to me. “Gosh, I can’t believe we’re doing this now.”
“Believe it. Never been out of town, correct?” I ask.
“No, I think” she says. “Ash, we’re going to London!”
“My home. Nothing special.” Very special; I just can’t admit it. There’s a reason why I don’t live there anymore.
“It’s London!”
I roll my eyes, “Yes, I can hear you, Oh Sora. And I can see you have packed well. How can it be not at all surprising that you bring a pink duffle bag? I thought you’ve changed for good.” Not to mention, she goes back wearing the pink shirts. I have nothing against the color pink. I do have a problem if she sticks out like sore thumb while being with me.
“Well, I love pink. You love black. That’s called personal preference.”
“It’s not even because I love black. It’s like job description. I am a Hunter and you’re my … companion.”
“Friend,” she corrects me, grinning.
I shake my head. “Not really, no.”
“Come on you just don’t want to admit it. I’m your friend. Possibly, the only one.”
No, I mentally argue. There’s no point arguing with her anyway. One thing about this ‘companion’ topic is that the more you answer and let the conversation goes on, the more excited she becomes. And when she’s on the equivalent of sugar high, the conversation will go horrifyingly long.
“Whatever,” I decide to say.
Beside me Sora hums to a tune I’m not familiar with. “How did you get the tickets, anyway?” she asks after some time.
“I bought it, obviously.”
“You don’t have the money,” Sora points out.
“Of course, I have, Oh Sora. Do you think I’ve been a Hunter for nothing?”
“But you don’t really make millions with this thing, right?”
“No, but being the good guy that I am, I save from time to time. It’s not that I have a lot to spend anyway.”
“Hmm, alright,” she says. “Just so you know I’m scared of flying.”
“How do you know you’re scared if you’ve never flown?”
“I just do. OMG is that the airport? I’m getting nervous already. But of course you’ll be there for me, right?”
Great. It’s gonna be a hell of a flight.
