A Thousand Words • A Graphic Contest

I'm sure there are very little people who haven't heard of the saying, "A picture is worth a thousand words." As a writer, I've never really felt that any picture of mine could be worth ten words, much less a thousand (then again, perhaps that's why I've always stuck with writing). 

Still, the correlation between writing and art is there. It's true that a picture can tell a story, and at times, more effeciently and more beautiful than any word can describe. The opposite goes as well. 

With this contest, I hope to tie those together. Originally, this contest was done last year for my readers to create posters for my ongoing fics and for the top three to be selected from those. It was relatively successful, but, admittedly, the fact that it was done in my fics (some of which hadn't been updated in ages) and blog posts made it somewhat disorganized. My fingers are crossed that this one will be much easier to run and tidy, especially when it comes for sorting the categories out, prizes, and winners. 

If I have managed to keep your attention to this point, then hopefully you are considering joining! As I have glanced on above, this contest will bring together writing and art. You are to create a poster either for a fic I am writing at the moment (Concrete), or for a more abstract idea (Vivid). Judging will start in Feburary of 2019, and the winners will be announced in March. Submissions will close on Janurary 27th, 2019. They are OPEN now. 

If you plan on submitting a graphic, here are the instructions: 

1. Please read through all the information here. If you want updates on the contest, deadlines (which may be extended) or to see other people's entries, you should probably subscribe. 

2. Head over to categories to choose where you're going to enter. Make sure that you know what to do for Concrete and Vivid so there isn't any confusion (though if there is, please PM me). 

3. Once you have chosen the category you're going to enter your poster in, choose one of the 4 stories in that category to enter your poster. You can enter unlimited times, though you cannot score more than one place in the same category. However, you can win in two categories if you have submitted for both Concrete and Vivid.

4. Please refer to the rubric to know what to keep in mind when you're doing your category and how it will be judged! 

5. Please post a blog to the contest and tag it "athousandwords"! Include the link and the banner back to the contest.

6. Once you have finished your graphic, refer to the form and comment your submission below.

About the Judge

Hello, I'm Emily, or Em! I'm a writer on here, and maybe you know me from my fics. While I've only dabbled a little bit with digital art, I've done painting and sketching for a long, long time. 

I held a similiar contest last year, except it was mostly for just my readers, and I'm really excited to see what everyone comes up with this time around! There are so many talented designers on AFF, so I'm super hyped for this. 

Concrete

Learn to work within a set boundary yet let your creativity still go free in that boundary; Concrete is a category where you will design a poster for a current, ongoing story I am writing.  

Vivid

Imagination first, rules second. Vivid is a category where you will design a poster for a brief, undeveloped plot idea I've thought of. This will reqiure you to decide what you believe the story is like.
