The right side of the bed was empty, as it was most mornings when Jung Minah woke.

She reached for the service rope on the side of the bed and pulled. Somewhere below the staff were alerted that the Madame of the household was awake. So began her daily routine. When she stepped out the shower, her clothes were already set out, freshly pressed and scented with rose essence. 

Minah stared at her reflection. At least she should always look perfect so that the imperfections in the rest of her life were little more manageable.

The house was abuzz with early morning activity. Floor to ceiling terrace doors was flung open and flower bouquets brought in from the city, all chosen by her the previous week, set on large round tables and pedestals throughout the house. Minah noticed these with a nod of approval to the head butler, her heart was already giddy as her feet automatically picked up speed and she entered the breakfast room. And there she was! Her heart swelled.

The girl yelled stretching out her arms for Minah.
