setting the scene...
just another day here at hoyang's trendiest cafe! the warm vibes are welcoming, the slight bustle is comforting, and to top it all off, the food and drinks are delicious. come on in, order some yummies, and make yourself at home here at dalkomaeul! it's rumored to be the number one feel-good cafe, but they do say that if you pay close enough attention, you can always hear the faint squabbles of a certain pair of twins...
the scene !
"jamong, can you take this to table five?" jadu nods toward the blueberry ade and caramel latte she's just made, reaching past her brother to put the fruit preserves back in the fridge. he's standing there with his arms crossed, staring into the oven, where a batch of scones slowly bakes. without looking at her, he responds, "i'm kinda busy."
she glares at him. it's about 4:30pm, when business tends to slow down, and he's just been peering into that damn oven for the past 5 minutes, claiming "they do better when i watch them".
"busy, my . hurry up, they're trying to get my number." she turns away from the drinks as a silent ultimatum, and jamong huffs dramatically, tossing the towel in his hands over his shoulder so he can grab the tray. "ohh, are they now, miss confident?" jadu raises her eyebrows and presses her lips together, "well, unless they meant something else when they said 'can i get your number'".
she turns away from him, starting to wipe some utensils dry. he glares at her smug backside, making faces and mouthing incoherent swear words, but suddenly his lips seal shut, and all he can get out is a confused "mmm?? mmm!!" still not looking at him, jadu inconspicuously puts a finger down, dispersing an almost undetectable cloud of shimmers that's already fading from sight. "pretty words~" she singsongs slyly.
"pretty words~" bok echoes from the fridge, waving her fingers to undo jadu's petty spell. the phrase is like their family mantra, having been recited since the twins were young so as to emphasize the importance of thinking before you speak. in some ways, the lesson has flown over their heads, considering their constant daily banter, but one too many faulty spells has definitely taught them to be mindful of their words.
jadu wriggles her fingers, stretching them out. it's always rough to go such long hours being so cautious about using magic, though it has gotten easier with time. the choi family has learned to be swift with using their magic at the cafe so that it's not too obvious, but they still try to use it sparingly.
"don't think i'm not gonna get you back for that." jamong hisses in jadu's ear as he passes by. in response, she just raises her hand. though a simple action, it's in a manner similar to the way one might pull back a fist, and the implied threat is the same. against his will, jamong flinches, then glares at jadu's cocky smirk that clearly says "i win".
"my children, we have a customer~!" hakmin calls from across the kitchen with a smile that says "jolly day" but eyes that say "yall best quit fooling around unless you want me to turn you into frogs".
jamong whirls around to see a girl waiting patiently on the other side of the counter, immediately switching on his customer service smile. "ah, hi, what can i get you?" she chuckles courteously, "could i have two grape juices and a blueberry tart?". jamong inputs the order and gives a sheepish smile. "sorry you had to witness our sibling bickering...we have fun here, really."
"no, no, it's fine!" she laughs reassuringly. "i have a little brother, so i feel you. but also, i've actually heard a lot of good things about this place, and it keeps up!" jamong's expression brightens, "oh really? that's great to hear." the customer nods, "my friends always say that even just being here makes them feel better - like, no matter what, the vibes just immediately comfort them...almost like magic." her tone is playful and she shakes her head slightly at the ridiculous notion, as if she's saying "can you imagine?". jamong chuckles, more to himself than anything, and smiles gratefully up at the customer as he hands her the receipt.
"like magic, huh?"
