Description

Most soulmates have a ‘cheat’ to help them guide their way to the other. Some cheats are external, such as same eye color and same birthmark, and others are internal, such as hearing their voice inside their head or glimpses into their vision. However, those who don’t have these cheats have a hard time believing in the concept.

Irene: a twenty-five-year-old high school history teacher who writes and paints on her arms.

Yeri: a nineteen-year-old who wishes to major in art who hears someone else’s thoughts.

Wendy: a twenty-one-year-old who is at school studying piano who dreams his memories.

Joonmyeon: a twenty-eight-year-old exhibit manager for a museum who watches words and images appear on his arms.

Jongdae: a twenty-year-old who is at school studying to become an audio engineer who’s watch fluctuates constantly.

Minseok: a twenty-seven-year-old who is the manager of a small coffee shop near a university.

Foreword

Irene sighed at the pile of papers she planned on grading over the weekend, wondering if she could get it done within a few hours tomorrow. Right now, she had to reserve a tour for her class for a field trip to the museum; an outing she wasn’t looking forward to, however she was thankful she was teaching high schoolers, and not elementary students. She didn’t want to imagine the pain of herding seven year in a museum.

She threw the pile on her coffee table and picked up her laptop, wondering if she should spend the night watching another episode of a sitcom and drink some wine again. She looked at her right arm, sighing with some thought. She instead put on some house music and looked up one of many museums she needed to narrow through. Eventually, she picked one of the city’s most well known and hummed at the collection of exhibits it offered, including a solar system exhibit that she always wanted to see. She hummed at the idea and thought of how romantic it would be if she found her soulmate and kissed him under a thousand projected stars or in front of the diorama of Jupiter and Neptune.

Without much though, she picked up her pen and jotted down the address on her arm, the first inked image on her arm today. When her pen lifted from her skin, she wondered if her soulmate, whoever they are out there, would drop all their life to visit her there; just to see who they’re supposed to connect with.

She closed the search engine and the TV, ending up watching a trashy reality show and got up to pour herself some wine. She even grabbed some cookies she tried to hide from herself a week ago, with no plans on getting through her ever growing of assignments piling. She thought to herself how amazing it would be to meet her soulmate tomorrow, just being able to see a face and maybe a touch.

Wendy left the piano room well after midnight, somewhat surprised to see her best friend sitting next to the door, earbuds in and bobbing his head to something on his computer. He looked up at her with a bright smile, which made her heart jump, and greeted her, pausing his work and saving before he got up. “How was practice?”

“It went well. I had better time with this piece than the last one,” Wendy smiled, lifted her back pack onto her other shoulder and massaging her hands, “However, I always preferred the faster, jazzier pieces.”

Jongdae looked down at her hands, before reaching out to massage the one, his thumb massing her palm and the other striking her fingers. Wendy looked down and bit her lip, the sight of his watch jumping around constantly, containing her heart. She never really liked looking at it, a constant reminder that he hasn’t found his soulmate. She let out a sigh, and looked up at him, with a forced smile, “How’s your project going?”

“Excellent, I’m almost done with it,” he smiled, and Wendy wondered when he got closer. “You can listen to it. I trust your judgement on sound.”

Huffing out a smile, she pulled her hand away and tilted her head. “Maybe you should get of the seniors to listen to it. Remember, I play an entirely different genre of music from you.”

Jongdae grabbed her other hand to massage it, “Yes but your obligations as my best friend is to listen to my ty work.”

Wendy pouted, forgetting the butterfly sensations in her stomach when he pressed into her palm. “Your work isn’t like that Jongdae. Clubs and raves will be calling you as soon as you graduate, and I won’t see you ever again because you’ll be living the life of the rich and famous, traveling Ibiza, London, Tokyo, Seoul.”

Jongdae chuckled, keeping his eyes on her hands. “If you think I’m going to last that long without my best friend, then you’re crazy. No, I’ll perform where ever you are so we’re never that far away.”

She felt like her heart stopped at his words, however a gleam of the watch helped her back to her reality and she once again forced her hands out of his, trying not to further herself into the major crush she had on him. She pulled a strand of hair back behind her ear and gave a small smile, “What if you find your soulmate?”

“Well, what if I told you we are?”

Her heart pounds again and she pointed to his wrist, “That doesn’t exactly help. It’s been broken for years, why don’t you get it fixed? Even you said it’s been well broken before you met me, so don’t try to say it broke when we met.”

“You always see through my thoughts, don’t you?” he said with an amused smile, “So if I get it fixed, will you believe me when I prove to you you’re my soulmate? You have no clue if I am or not.”

She discreetly swallowed, remembering the lie she told him. Relax, he doesn’t know. However, putting up a front, she nodded and started to walk around him, trying to put on an act. “Sure, if that happens, but don’t be surprised if I told you so,” she sang, feeling each word on her tongue like bad food.

Jongdae picked up his things and slid it into his bag, trying to catch up to her; the numbers on his watch constantly changing.

Yeri sighed as she walked up to the counter, a man with high cheek bones and smile looked at her, welcoming her to the café. She smiled back and told him she had an interview with the manager, which he told her to sit anywhere, offering her any drink. She didn’t even look up at the menu when she asked for the special and went to sit at a wooden table with metal chairs.

She crossed her legs and placed her folded hands on the table top, taking another deep breath. She could hear the manager’s name in the distance, and it made her heart race.

Interview, then back to the paperwork. Gotta get those counts in before the afternoon ends.

She remembered when the first time she met the manager a few years ago, she only heard snippets of words, but it was definitely his voice. When she got older and transferred to the university in the city, she started to come to the café every day to study, decreasing her sweet tooth and hearing phrases and strings of sentences.

Now, as she bit her lip, she was going to formally meet him, despite the anonymous letters she sent him over the years.

“Oh, Yeri? You’re applying to work here?” the manager sounded surprised when he came into her view. She tried her best to act as she normally would, but she didn’t know if her heart would race out of her chest as she tried to decipher what she liked best about the manager as he sat down across from her, some papers in front of him: his eyes, his lips, or his forearms.

“Well, I’m in here every day, and school isn’t paying for itself,” she joked, shrugging, “Might as well work here since I know the menu like the back of my hand.”

“Then is there a point to this interview?” he joked as well, their eyes meeting. Yeri felt like she was cold and hot; somehow fighting against each other as she continued with the interview.

It was rather short before the manager smiled, closing the file. He sat back, crossing his arms. She has a pretty face, which might help bring in a few new customers… but who’s going to train her? “So how’s your brother? He was a regular too, and then he just stopped. Did he graduate?”

“Ah, yeah. Jonghyun moved back home and he’s been seriously dating this one girl. My parents and I have a bet as to when he’ll pop the question, and so far, my mom lost,” she grinned, pulling out her phone and swiping to find a selfie, showing the manager.

Yeri believed the interview went well, and Jongdae finally brought the special, a drawn on smiley face on the plastic. She looked at the cup, trying to guess what the creamy brown iced liquid was, causing Jongdae to chuckle.

“It’s called ‘The Minseok’,” Jongdae pointed fun at the manager, poking him in the shoulder, “Cold and plain on the outside. Vanilla on the inside; it’s a classy drink.”

“Shut up and go back to work,” the manager blushed.
