Escape From the Mental

Description

They're both stuck in a hospital. One wants to run away, one wants to stay.
Whose mind is more powerful? More overwhelming?
Can there be friendship, love or lust between the mentally challenged?

Foreword

"You're so pretty, you know that?" he said, smiling as he reached his hand forward, "You're so beautiful. Your smile is radiating. I could look all day at it."

He stood on the bed, staring into space, a big smile covering his face. He's been like that for a couple of years and only recently have his parents noticed that. At first, the moments he'd act this way weren't too often, but as time passed, he'd lock up into his room and have these eternal conversations. Maybe he was talking on the phone. Maybe he was talking through the microphone with one of his friends.

He was hallucinating. And talking to the illusions he saw became more often by day. When it started, he'd only see weird shapes and things that looked like butterflies, insects, small birds, but they were all blurry, so he blamed everything on both weak eye vision and exhaustion. He didn't tell anyone about what was happening to him, not even when he started seeing full human beings, trying to interact with him, calling his name, waking him up from his sleep and finally, the impression of feeling their touch. Those blurry, translucent silhouettes were now vivid figures he would easily identify. Some of them showed more than once and he got accustomed with their presence, and also suffered horribly when they left, even if they were replaced by others.

"Take the hair out of your face, dear," he whispered, the smile still lingering on his face, "Or, wait, let me help you."

Before his eyes, his fingers lightly dabbed onto the girl's face and pushed the strands of hair away from her face, tucking them behind her ear. When he finished, he let his hand slide down from her ear, cupping her left cheek. He saw the girl close her eyes and lean her face into his hand, putting her hand over his. Even though she said nothing, her mere presence - mind you, illusion - was enough for him. He was happy. He could've stood forever like that, stopping time at that very moment. Suddenly, a sleepy feeling overwhelmed him until he fell onto his back on the bed, instantly sending his mind in yet another dimension.

Crash!

"Leave me alone! It's gonna pass! I know it'll let me be at a certain point! Just let it develop and it will eventually disappear!"

Her Mom didn't wait for her to finish her explanation that she grabbed her daughter's wrist and pulled her towards the car in spite of her endless struggle. She started crying and shouting, but it seemed like her mother has had enough. She pushed her daughter in the backseat as she climbed into the front, ready to drive off. The girl finally knew that she had no escape this time. Resignation was never one of her choices, yet she had nothing else to do now. Between sobs and hiccups, she climbed her feet up on the bench and cried silently into her knees. The last time she was taken to a psychiatrist, she was so scared - more like terrified - of what she was going to be done, so she ran away and eventually got home after a day and a half of wandering through the streets. This time, though, it was different. She's been thinking about it everytime a depression struck through her mind, but knowing that it would pass later on, she ignored the thought. She kept it somewhere deep, at the back of her mind, trying her best not to trigger it. But now she was certain of it.

She had no more reason. She was no longer a reason. Maybe it was too early for her to do that. Maybe it was too late to think it over and change her mind. Suicide was up high on her list of priorities and she promised herself she wouldn't let it slip that easily again.
