DESCRIPTION
it’s a little ironic, he thinks, fingers grazing swirls of black ink and scribbled grocery lists on the back of his forearm. meaningless doodles, surely, if not for the hands clutching a marker on her skin fifteen miles away. it’s a little ironic, he thinks as he looks up at the call of his name, a shot shoved into his hand as he clinks glass against glass, that since the age of 18 the universe has carved a match for him with little to no regard of his own two cents. he leans back against the balcony railing as the last rays of the malibu sunset drips away — but perhaps the universe is right. grinning at the hearts doodled onto his arm, he proudly shows it off to his friend who snorts into his soju glass, meat grilling in between the two of them. “bro,” his friend starts, picking up the tongs to flip over the samgyeopsal, “i could never do that. mine always argues with me about stupid , so annoying man.”
the sizzling of meat is replaced with the slurping of shin ramen on the other side of campus, organic chemistry textbook carelessly strewn next to half opened potato chips and muji pens. she curls a strand of hair behind her ear as she leans over her cup, sharing a knowing look with the friend in front of her and stifling a laugh as they both try to hide the smell of food from the librarians. no food policy be damned during midterm season (library camping season?) if it means sharing noodles at 2 am. she watches her friend peer at her arm, lighting up as she shows the appendage to the other with a roll of her eyes, “he’s drinking and he just won beer pong.” the former looks at her own arm and sighs in relief, “i think i’m just glad mine doesn’t talk to me. last time, we just argued.” her friend offers a sympathetic shrug before they both start testing each other on problem sets. after all, they have more important things to worry about than late 19th century traditions of your soulmate being the only one for you.
he knows his ears are going to be ringing once he steps foot outside of the frat house, but he can’t seem to find it in himself to care, the jaeger bombs warming his body as he throws the ping pong ball cleanly into the last red solo cup across from him. faces are blurry and the cheers from the people around him melt with the heavy despacito remix. he throws a lazy grin at his beer pong partner, basking in the smell of youth — that whiff of bad decisions and hazy glory. it’s only after a few minutes that he finally get to escape the clutches of his friends, finding a quiet place outside with a pen as he sloppily writes on his arm, “ur boy made death cup.” the response from his soulmate comes quickly, a cute little, “good job! i knew you could do it!” etching onto his skin. he smiles and inhales the salty beach air before standing up, wobbling a bit as he makes his way back into the party.
they say it’s a little sad, that some are destined to never meet despite being soulmates and some are destined to love so deeply that the future holds nothing but painful retribution. but at the prime of your youth on the sunkissed shores of california, twin ink carefully painted onto two matching expanses of skin, there’s little you want to do but live life in time. its mundane yet insane, that there’s someone out there for you.
