With shaking hands, he picked up the note on the bedside table. He stared harshly at the piece of paper nestled between his trembling fingers. 

Please do not be sad. Do not be angry with me. I am truly sorry. 

Those were the only words scribbled onto the back of a receipt paper. The note slipped from his fingers. His eyes quickly scanned the perimeters of the room. Her purse, her shoes, her clothes, and everything that belonged to hers was gone as if her presence was nonexistent. The life that they both had earnestly dreamed of had shattered and dissolved into thin air as if promises meant nothing.  

She was gone.
