Han Somi couldn’t be more uncomfortable than she was at that very moment. She knew exactly how she got where she was, that wasn’t the confusing part, it was why she was where she was that confused her. She still couldn’t believe it, her parents had shipped her off so happily when the time for her to come to the new school came, two days before they were sobbing and begging for her forgiveness, and that’s what she remembered better than the delight on her parents face when they shoved her on an unfamiliar bus to go to a new school that was “safe” for her kind.

What exactly was Somi? Well, she still hardly believed she was what her parents told her, and it all started because of one boy that acted like a wild animal.

Somi was happy, she enjoyed spending time with her friends, it was easier to get along with the several boys she was friends with than it was to get along with the girls in her school. Those girls were snobby little princesses draped in pink in every aspect possible, and reputation seemed to be the only thing that mattered to them. Somi believed that her friends must have been the only other people in the school that didn’t care about what others thought about them, that was what made it so freeing to hang around them.

So Somi was still in one of her best moods when she was making her journey home, but everything happened so quickly and crashed the satisfaction that came with a good day. She was just outside her house, and she didn’t live in a rough area, so Somi had no idea why she was being knocked over a by a raging male that was being chased by someone even angrier.

“Ow! What the hell?!” Somi screamed, she was knocked on her back and the one that crashed into her was rolling along the pavement behind her.

“Get out of the way!” A gruff voice exclaimed and Somi was kicked in the stomach, forcing her to move and almost hack up her lungs.

“Excuse me?!” Somi exclaimed and when she was ignored she only became angrier, she didn’t like being pushed around by good for nothings. Holding onto her sore stomach, Somi stood, watching the one that had barrelled into her get the hiding of his life from his chaser, the onslaught of violence only made her temper rise.

“Will you get out of here with this idiocity?!” Somi wasn’t exactly pleased that there was a fight breaking out in front of her house and moving onto the green grass of her front yard that her mother invested a lot of time into keeping alive. Somi was by the fighter when the aggressive attacker turned to get her off his back. She screamed and brought her hands up with a wave of her arms to cover herself as she fell to the ground again. With her screams of pain, the front door to her house was opened and her parents ran forward in a panic. They halted, Somi’s father pushing her mother back as a ball of flames clung to the attacker like a leech. Its appearance was sudden and even the Han’s were confused by where it came from at first. Somi looked up when she wasn’t attacked by the one that was meant to be hunching over her, hearing screams that weren’t her own. She had missed the way the flames had swooped out from behind her arms and around her attacker until they were clinging to him. But she screamed, flailing her limbs with the heels of her shoes digging into the ground as she pushed herself away. The flames disappeared just as the boy dropped his body on the grass to try and roll his body out of the toxic heat.

“What the ?” The other battered and bruised boy gasped and Mrs Han took the house slipper off her foot to whack him over the head.

“Language young man, now stand up and come inside, you need to recover” Mr Han helped him to his feet, the pair were willing to welcome the burnt boy into their home for some first aid, but he took off running before they could demand anything of him.

“Stand up sweetheart” Mrs Han put her hands under her daughter’s arms and helped her to stand on her shaky feet.

“Where did the fire go?” She shook and Mrs Han gave a shake of her head.

“We will talk about that when we have this boy bandaged up and on his way, he could do with your help right now”

“What’s your name?” Somi asked the boy sitting on the seat of her toilet, she half couldn’t believe her parents were leaving her alone with a stranger, but she was grateful they understood that she liked to have as much personal space possible to get the job done when she was doing any sort of patching up.

“I’m wrapping you up in my house, the least you can do is tell me your name. Or maybe you could stop attempting to snarl at me and tell me why some of these bruises are fading already” Somi grumbled and the look of ill intent slipped from her patients face.

“My name is Yoo Kihyun, I heal quickly” Kihyun shrugged, and now Somi had a name to put to the discoloured face.

“Your parents said they had some things to tell you, I assume you’ll find out more about me from them” Kihyun mumbled when he saw the confusion on Somi’s face.

“I’m Han Somi” She mumbled and Kihyun nodded, his eyes scanning her bathroom as he tried not to move too much.

“You look young, how do you know all this stuff?” Kihyun asked, it seemed he only knew how to speak in a bitter tone, or maybe he was still angry from his fight.

“I want to be a nurse, so I’ve taken a few first aid courses in my time” Somi muttered and Kihyun hummed.

When Kihyun was gone Mrs Han released the tears that she had been biting back when she was only talking to her husband, Somi knew that whatever it was that they had to tell her, it was something serious, she questioned if maybe it was something that would ruin her life, she assumed so based on the tears of her mother.

“Somi, sit down, it’s time to talk” Mr Han looked at his daughter with sad eyes and the girl nodded, sitting at the kitchen table across from her sobbing mother and red eyed father.

“What is it?” Somi couldn’t bring herself to speak above a whisper. Her parents looked at each other and Mr Han sighed when he saw that his wife wasn’t going to be able to talk.

“Somi, we’ve been keeping something from you for a long time now. We didn’t want any danger to come to you, so we did our best to merge you into the lifestyle of the normal family, the normal human as best as we could from the day you were born, because we didn’t want you to live the same way that we had to, but we ignored fate and the factor that it plays in the life of our kind” Mr Han started, reaching across the table to put his hands over Somi’s interlocked fingers. She sat staring at her parents.

“Fate has caught up with us, and it’s time you know who you really are. What was that boy's name?”

“Kihyun” Somi answered in her quiet voice.

“Meeting Kihyun was no accident Somi, somehow, your fate is interlocked with that boy, whether it is long term or just to show you the real world you were meant to live in, that’s for you to find out. “What do you mean dad?” She whispered and Mr Han sighed.

“Oh Somi” Mrs Han quivered but Somi spared herself from the emotions that would come with looking at her distraught mother again.

“We, your entire family are element wielders, one of the rarest of immortals living currently, but you Somi, you need extra protection because you are one of the most important ones. You see, when an element wielder is born with the parents of similar elements, it is very rare, rarer than meeting a fairy, that the child conceived earns both of the elements. And that is exactly what happened to you, you have the power of the dragon and of the phoenix, both live within you, and with it, you can summon creatures of your very own that match your elements”
