Comfortably settled in bed, I was laying on my back just kind of staring off into space. Down the hall, my mother slept peacefully, probably dreaming about cupcakes or something. A door down from her slept Jun, probably completely and dreaming about a modeling career. But I couldn’t sleep.
The minutes ticked by slowly and when my eyes wandered over to my phone screen I realized that it was nearly 4:30 in the morning. Despite knowing there was no way I was going to survive school tomorrow (or later today, I guess), I couldn’t find it in me to care. Instead, I kept thinking about everything that happened with Seungkwan.
I hadn’t told anyone about the bond. Jun must’ve had his suspicions seeing as there wasn’t a scratch on me, but he didn’t say anything. I kept thinking back to the note that was lying next to my phone, slightly crinkled from the amount of times I’d touched it and played with it.
Don’t let it go to your head, it said. But that’s exactly what happened. The formation of the bond was terrifyingly toxic. It felt so right and so natural but it wasn’t supposed to be. Someone just handed their life over to me and all I could think about was how I deserved all the power I had just gained and then some. It wasn’t right. I shouldn’t feel like that.
I knew from the start that I was in way over my head. But the feeling of helplessness hadn’t hit me as hard before as it did at that ungodly hour of the night. After my first run-in with the butterflies, all thoughts of being physically prepared flew out of my head. But now, I was also mentally unable to handle the one thing I needed to do to save anyone. Hell, I still couldn’t wrap my head around the idea that I had abilities that reached beyond that of an average homo sapien, let alone that I had to use them to save a world that seemed pretty safe to me.
Somewhere around 5:15 I found sleep
