Something More

“Movie?”

Kim Yura stared at her phone with a giddy smile. One word. One question. It was the only thing that could make her day. A text message with that one question from him. Hong Jong Hyun, who once was her virtual husband. Her Jjong Oppa.

It was something and more.

--

She always had that wary feeling, even from the start that once their segment ends, everything comes along with it. The bond they shared will be gone. They will lose contact. Just like every other couple that had joined the show, We Got Married. It was a normal path for everyone. End ties when they’re finished with filming.

She knew all that. She came prepared. Yet when she was the one there, she couldn’t help it. Getting herself attached to him. The time she got to know him, before she was aware, had found a place in her heart. When she just knew she was already breaking through his walls and he was willingly letting her in. When even with his unresponsiveness, she’s slowly getting to see the little things he was doing secretly for her, warmly, lovingly. His shy laughter and naughty attacks that were shown only with her. His eyes that became warm when he regards her. The little things he does that don’t get noticed by others, she got to know them of him. And she loved every bit of them. He was not extravagant but he took care of her in little details. It was these things that had made her feel he was genuine with her. It had caught her quite deep. So even though she came prepared, she’d admitted defeat against this hidden charm of his.

Days after their virtual marriage ended, Yura dreaded waking up and remembering him. She never knew she’d missed him so badly. That her stoic partner could’ve made that effect on her. She only realized how deep she’d felt for him when she imagined she won’t be seeing him again. She had missed him every day, wondering how he was doing. Her members knew how she would suddenly feel lonely when she remembers.

One day, Sojin took her out to eat bingsu to entertain her. She gladly accepted it, a break from her sulking with memories of her ex-visual husband. Sweets does lift her spirits up. She was laughing and chatting already with Sojin when just in that moment exactly, the store door opens and in comes the reason of her sulking the past few days. Hong Jong Hyun.

Her smile froze on her face then. He was also about to say something but was obviously taken aback by the sight of her. She felt her world stop, wondering if she was dreaming. Her heart thumped in joy, for some reason. Even more, when a smile slowly crept up his face. He looked handsome and dashing as always. She raised an awkward hand and returned his smile, “Oppa, annyeong haseyo.” They bowed to each other.

She noticed him shuffling on his spot then, hesitating until he clumsily decided to sit by the window. It made her giggle. She had infected him with her clumsiness when they’ve spent time together. The sound had reached him and she saw him let out a small laugh as well.

She wanted to sit beside him and talk about anything again. She used to babble stuff to him before, he always listened to her and regarded her with warm eyes. She always appreciated him doing that for her. But now they were in that stage where in their virtual marriage has ended and they are at lost with what their relationship is after. So Yura gladly took whatever was given to her at that moment, just peeking at him from the sides, catching his eyes that wander to her as well.

A few days after that incident, her phone vibrated at an unusual time of the night. His name appeared and she almost clumsily dropped her phone. He sent her a message. Finally.

“Ah young, are you eating healthily? Stop eating too much sweets.”

It made her smile. He must have been thinking about that since their incident at the bingsu shop. “What is this, Oppa?” She murmured in giddy smile to herself.

She had quickly typed a reply then, “No, I haven’t eaten yet, Oppa,” adding a crying emoji. Her phone had rang almost immediately after sending. Just as she expected.

“Ah Young-ah.” She prepared herself yet she still felt her heart drop at hearing her real name again with his voice.

“Oppa,”

“You did not eat yet?”

“Uh-hung.” she answered putting more aegyo than she usually does, wishing he’d just say something to sweep her off her feet. To end this unsureness.

And when he asked her to come out so they can grab something to “healthy” to eat, she knew then that things will not end along with their virtual marriage. There was going to be something more.

--

Jong Hyun could not count how many times he’d hesitated then, staring at her phone number. It was harder for him to endure since even after their show ended, he still saw her everywhere in promotions. He’d remember the times he was allowed to have her by his side. He’d taken it for granted, his regret. Now, seeing her everywhere, he wished he could’ve done something about it. He’d stare at her number on his phone and reminisce the times she got him laughing because her own laughter was contagious, them enjoying the time just being beside each other. Once the memories are too much, he’d just close his phone and return it back to his pocket. It had become a routine.

So when that time happened, when they coincidentally met at that bingsu shop few days after they parted ways on the show, he’d thought then he shouldn’t let the moment pass. He felt the world slow down then. When he heard that vigorous laughter of hers and his eyes immediately landed on hers, he fought the urge to go straight to her and pull her to him. They both knew everyone was watching. It was that awkward moment when they didn’t know what relationship they should be in after ending their virtual marriage.

He’d been careful that day, just watching her from the corners of his eyes. Just seeing her laughing again made that tiny smile on his face. He was hesitating but he knew he shouldn’t let the days pass by without trying to contact her again. So that one night happened, a few days after, when he finally decided to contact her, making up something so he could ask her out to eat and have dinner with him. It was quite easy in her case, he knew she couldn’t resist food. He had it easy with the woman he chose.

He was able to hear her loud laughter again and couldn’t help but just stare at her all night long that time, not saying anything. No cameras, no reservations. Just the two of them. It was a perfect night. He just knew wanted more of nights like those.

Her laughter haunted him each night after. He was restless because he wanted more. He started to want to see her, to be able to hold her hand, to be the one beside her. Again.

He felt more strongly about that, days after their late night escapade, at the PD awards. She had looked stunning and he had forgotten to breathe for a moment when he saw her the first time that night. He suddenly wanted to cover her up and bring her back to that tiny home they’ve lived in, to keep her all to himself. She had worn that dress that showed too much of her fair skin. He himself did not know where to look at when she approached him. He felt a sudden protectiveness of her then. He knew he didn't want to break off anything with her. He had to stay beside her. He wanted to be the one to protect her.

He was resolved. So he’d ask her to sit beside him that night. She smiled brightly then, he was captivated by that faint blush perfectly tinted her cheeks. He was so proud of her when she got an award, he fought the urge to pull her down into a tight hug. She had deserved it, she deserved more good things. He wanted to be the one to give them to her.

They’d stuck beside each other that awards night, catching up and making sure to make a promise to hang out some time again. He knew he was lucky for that chance and that he had to work hard for it the second time. And he did.

--

Yura felt her heart flutter amongst the shriek and giggles of her members when Jong Hyun knocked on their room backstage in Inkigayo. He looked so striking then, with flowers and cake in his hands, coming through with his promise to support them on their comeback. That proud and handsome smile he was wearing. Only for her.

She did not know if the girls were more excited of her oppa visiting her or the cake he brought because they were all smiles as they ate the sweet pastry all at once. She knew for herself which made her happier that moment. It was that he remembered her and chose to be there for her instead of cutting ties with her like other couples. She couldn’t ask for anything more.

The two of them stepped out, leaving the members to happily finish the cake he bought. Jong Hyun suggested they take a photo to post and she suddenly felt her eyes water. Knowing him and his character, he was not one to suggest things like that. She on the other hand, likes those things so much. She was touched at his efforts. She knew it would be normal for other people but with him, it took more effort. Even more when he suggested they should follow each other on their social media account.

As they walked together, Yura couldn’t help but admire the flowers he gave her, feeling all giddy. Jong Hyun just watched her as they walked. He was satisfied just looking at her bright smile.

She peeks at him, looking shy and sly at the same time. She bit her lip, calming down her excited heart. Jong Hyun also controls the smile creeping on his face, he fake rubs his nose to hide his blush.

“Did you pick these oppa?” Oggling at the flowers she can’t get enough of. He bought her flowers. Hong Jong Hyun bought her flowers. She wanted to jump in joy.

“Hn?” Jong Hyun raised his brows a little with a slight nod, being shy.

Yura smiles brightly and thought his bashful side was cute. He brought a hand up to rub the back of his neck. She giggled and impulsively went on her tip toes and gave him a quick peck on the cheek.

Yura was surprised at what she’d suddenly done as she froze, mentally scolding herself. Quickly, she went to step away but his arm caught her waist before she lost balance. Yura lifted her eyes to meet his and they stared at each other for a moment, their breathing caught.

Yura could hear her heart thumping on her chest that was almost touching his. “Oppa,”

“Hn?” His hum vibrated from his body to hers and it made her heat up. A blush colored her cheeks.

She wanted to look away but his eyes held hers. Suddenly, he smiles and his eyes softens up as he brings up a hand to the back of her neck and slowly pulled her closer to him. His other arm snaking towards her back. He hugs her tenderly securing his arms around her, his low voice vibrates through her hair, tickling her ears, “Congratulations, Ah Young-ah.”

Yura felt her heart drop at that, her eyes watered again and she started to smile against his shoulder as she brought up her hands to rest on his back. “Uhn. Thank you, Oppa.”

She couldn’t ask for more yet he gave her more. She did want more. More of him. Every day. Ever since.

--

Yura entered the cinema when the lights went out, finding her seat in the dark.  “Here it is!” she exclaimed excitedly as she sat down, looking out for Jong Hyun as the movie starts. “Where is he?”

She looked at the screen, as the names of the cast appeared one by one, “Eh, wait, this isn’t Oppa’s movie… right?”

Just then, Jong Hyun arrives and stealthily sits down beside her. Yura brightens up even at just the sight of him and his passive face. She brought a hand up. “Anyeong.”

Jong Hyun smiles handsomely, giving her hand a gentle squeeze and puts it down. “Is the movie good?”

“Uh-huh. But this isn’t your movie, Oppa…” she pouted cutely but still turned to watch, readjusting her jacket.

“Yeah. I just wanted to watch it with you.” He said casually, also fixing his jacket that matched hers.

“Ey, really,” Yura slaps his arm and turned away, hiding the small blush on her face, making Jong Hyun scoff. Recently, he’d learned to make comments that made her blush easily. She wondered where he learned those. He handed her the popcorn he brought and with wide eyes, she excitedly thanks him as she took it. He enjoyed watching her every response.

It was halfway through the movie but Jong Hyun can’t help but just watch her every reactions. Watching more of her than the movie. Yura, noticing this, peeks at him. “Yah, I thought you wanted to watch the movie with me.” she had that shy smile. “Not watch me with the movie?” Her eyes suddenly turned teasing. “Am I too cute, you’re distracted, Oppa? Kekekeke”

“Beautiful.”

Yura blinked her eyes at him, “Eh?”

“You’re too beautiful, I got distracted.” He sips on their drink, casually after dropping that comment.

Yura was speechless as she felt her face turn red at his comments. There he goes again. She can never predict this man. One moment his so reserved and the next moment he gives comments like these so nonchalantly. She covered her blushing cheeks. “Yah, you’re making me shy...”

Jong Hyun just shakes his head, chuckling. His eyes still warm as he turns to look at the screen.

“You tease.” Yura giggled and lifted herself up, creeping closer and planting a soft kiss on the side of his lips.

Jong Hyun looks at her and she returned his look with a sweet smile, making Jong Hyun smile as well. He looked so handsome smiling, she thought. She must have saved an entire country in her past lifetime to be so lucky to have all his handsomeness all to herself. She bit her lip as her eyes dared him to do something more.

Jong Hyun scoffs at her challenge as he reaches out his other hand to catch her face and brings it closer, giving her a sweet long kiss.

Yura was slightly pushed back against her seat and she erupted with a slight giggle through his lips. Her lips touched his for one last peck, her hand slightly squeezed the back of his head. “Let’s better watch the movie now, Oppa.”

“Alright. Just.. one. More.”

Giggle. “Arasso-ngg~”

Smirk. Kiss.

--

They were walking home through the cold night after having her favorite meat for dinner. They were wearing their matching long down jackets that almost covered their faces. Yura easily gets cold so Jong Hyun had bought a hot pack with him. He placed it on her other hand.

“Kekeke we don’t have cameras on us anymore.” Yura pointed out happily as she swings their intertwined hands. They stopped walking but did not let go.

Jong Hyun smiled slightly, fixing the hair that was blown all over her face. “I know.”

Yura smiled at him lively as they continued to walk. “Ah, I’m full!” Yura patted her tummy, “I love that the meat was spicy! They should do more of those.” She started blabbering and Jong Hyun didn’t mind. He was just happy to be able to listen to her talk and laugh again. Hold her hand and be beside her again. He was really grateful to have the chance to do more. To have more of her time. More of her.

He smiled to himself and let out a satisfied breath as he stopped walking and held Yura back as well. Yura turned to look at him, her hair swinging, eyebrows raised. Her lips pouted a little. “Hm?” It was too cute for him to see. That tiny little blush on her cheeks because of the cold. Nevertheless, he loved it. He loved seeing more of it every day.

“What is it, Oppa?”

Jong Hyun shook his head and just tugged her closer. Yura slowly took steps towards him.

“Hm?” Yura sweetly grinned up at him with blinking and questioning eyes as she reached him, she swung their joined hands, squeezing his hand. “What’s wrong?”

Jong Hyun just stared at her warmly. Yura felt her heart flutter. He always looks at her with soft eyes. She would never get tired of looking back at them. It warms her all over. She giggled and wounds her arms up around his neck, playing with the hair at the back of his head. She started giggling, she just felt happy to be with him. To have more time with him. She was just happy.

Jong Hyun leans down and kisses the side of her head before nuzzling his nose against her hair. He buried his face on the crook of her neck.

“Thank you, Ah Young-ah.” His muffled voice tickled her neck.

Yura caressed the back of neck affectionately. “For what, Oppa?”

“Everything. And more.”

Hearing that made Yura’s eyes water, burying her smile on his shoulder as a tear fell as she hugged him tighter. “Thank you too, Oppa.”

They were grateful to have more than they could ask for.

Having each other and spending time together, they couldn’t explain it, but it was always something.

Something more.
