Broken Mirrors
Description
We were polar opposites.
Everyone knows Mark and Donghyuck are the complete opposites of each other, day and night, black and white, left and right; Mark is rain while Donghyuck is a hurricane. Yet no matter the clashes, everyone also knows they are inseparable from each other. A bond stronger than glue, people sometimes suspect them to be more than just best friends.
We were spitting images.
As their senior year in highschool begins, Mark is off to a fresh start when someone notices him on the first day of school, scores a first date and seems to be getting his teacher's attention for his exceptional writing skills. Soon the life defining questions start to fill his mind, what's the next step after high school? Unlike Donghyuck, Mark has plans ahead of him, things he'd like to do alone. On the other hand, Donghyuck prefers things as they are at the moment - them spending time together, listening to each other's playlists on repeat, knowing they would be there for each other no matter the weather...
We were perfect illusions.
They had a promise to never keep secrets from each other, but both seem to be breaking their oaths. Donghyuck thinks Mark is slowly slipping away from him as Mark ponders on about the future, Mark thinks Donghyuck still can't make decisions for himself and is stuck in the present when time isn't going to pause any sooner. The two friends begin to realize their differences will eventually break their bond if they don't answer their own questions and rewrite their wrongs.
But what if no one is in the fault?
We were broken mirrors.
Foreword
I threw my mp3 to the ground, it responded with a painful crack appearing on the screen - blackening out as it died. I felt my heart pounding, out of anger and frustration. I was tired, so tired. Of him and his childish games. The only thing left clenched in my fists were my earphones. Donghyuck looked at me like a million things had shattered.
"I guess that's it," he murmured. "That's it."
"What do you mean 'that's it'?" I snapped. "It just broke."
"Along with something more." his eyes were turning red. "I'd rather you punch me than do that. Mark Lee. It'd make me realize we were on different boats." the way he said it seemed to be hurting him, I couldn't understand him at all. He was babbling nonsense.
"Excuse me?" I narrowed my eyes. "What does that supposed to mean?"
"It's her isn't it?" he wouldn't look at me. "She wanted you to think about your future with her! Going to the same college, marrying and having cute little kids ten years later. It's all planned out already, isn't it?"
He was being ridiculous. "This is about Riley? Dude, are you serious? We're only dating, we never even thought about-"
"Now it's always going to be 'we', huh? You and Riley, not me not ever."
"Donghyuck, you're being ridiculous. Just stop being a jealous brat-"
"Or you should stop being a selfish jerk and start being my best friend again." and that was when I knew this was more serious to him than it was to me. Rarely did Lee Donghyuck cry, and when he did - anyone could tell it was more than a tantrum.
I sighed, "Donghyuck, what aren't you telling me?"
