Fateful Encounter

Always

Lea walked out of her hotel as she fixed her backpack. She looked up and had a big grin plastered on her face. She was finally in South Korea about to wander through the streets of Seoul like she always wanted too. Granted she doesn’t know much Hangeul but with the amount of foreigners coming into South Korea lately, she noticed there were a lot of translated signs as well as for directions to certain cities and bus routes.

As she began walking, she had her GPS on to help her find her way to Myeongdong. It was close by her hotel but she just wanted to make sure she wouldn’t get lost. She was very prone to getting lost even in the states.

She always saw on TV how it would be crowded while walking the streets of Korea but seeing it first hand was pretty awesome in her eyes. She didn’t mind how crowded it was but back at home the malls would be just as crowded as the streets were here. Maybe that was a reason she was okay with seeing the walkway filled with people walking to their destinations.

As she reached Myeongdong, she heard some familiar songs playing. They only became louder as she turned the corner and saw all the shops that lined up the street.

She started walking around looking at the stalls of food and clothing that were everywhere.

“Whoa!” was all that Lea could say as she looked around. Everything was different compared to the states. The clothes were cuter than she expected and the smell of food tempted her to buy everything being sold.

She spent a good few hours around Myeongdong that literally just felt like minutes to her. She bought some outfits that she liked as well as some she never thought of buying, tried some food including some that she never thought she’d eat and bought some platform shoes that she could never find back at home but were in abundance here.

Everything was going perfect in her eyes. She sat on a bench for a moment next to a store that was playing B1A4’s “What’s Happening” which she started singing along to. Although her legs were slightly tired, the music re-energized her. She loved B1A4 and was happy they were getting played in their home country. She only wanted the best to happen to them.

Lea was lost in thought for a moment until the sound of a claw machine broke her trance. She looked at the time and decided that she should have one last look around and maybe get some coffee on the way back as she headed back to the hotel. She started walking around to a few shops that she missed the first time around and bought a few accessories before heading to a coffee shop about 5 minutes from the shops she was at.

It was around 9pm when she reached the coffee place. As she walked inside, she noticed how peaceful and calming the place felt to her. Usually the places that she saw so far were so full with people getting coffee to go with a large amount of noise but she was happy that because of the time she entered the place, it was nice and quiet . A few people were in front of her so she stood in line and recited what she was going to say to the barista to make sure her Korean was at least good enough to place an order correctly.

“Hello Welcome to Moonstar. May I take your order?” Once the male barista looked up at her, he realized that she was a foreigner and began panicking. He said excuse me before running towards the back of the store in hopes of getting another worker that spoke English. He took her to the front of the store before saying help me in Korean and walking to the baking area where he watched from afar.

“Hello. Sorry about that. What would you like to order?” The new barista asked her.

Lea frowned at the trouble she just caused and bowed to the barista named Jisun.

“I’ve very sorry for the trouble. I actually memorized how to order coffee so there wouldn’t be any hassle caused by me.” She frowned at the thought of having put others through more than they needed to.

“Don’t worry about that. There is always an English speaking Employee on shift at all times. If you would like, you can order in Korean to help you learn the language better.”

Lea nodded and said thank you to the nice employee. She was happy that some people were nice to her regardless of how she looks.

Mocha Frappuccino hana juseyo.(One Mocha Frappuccino, please.)” Lea said in a confident voice.

“That’ll be $3.50. Your Korean isn’t bad at all! “ Jisun said as she received the money for the coffee.

“Thank you very much. I practiced a lot while I waited.” Lea said shyly as she received a compliment. She reached for the change and decided to wait by the window since there were a few people behind her that wanted to order as well.

Lea looked at the night life from the window and smiled. *It looks as lively as the photos and snapchats I’ve seen.* She smiled at the thought feeling thankful that her family let her come visit for awhile.

Hearing her name being called broke Lea out of her thoughts. She went to pick up her order and said thank you to the barista. She decided that she would come here more often during her stay since they were very nice to her.

Lea started walking in the direction of her hotel as she sipped her frappuccino. She started looking at her surroundings when she noticed someone walking in her direction that looked extremely familiar. She didn’t want to make it seem like she was staring but if anyone was taking notice of her, they would see her just staring at a guy walking by and think she might be interested in him.

As the man walked closer, she could see some of the features that she knew from somewhere. A nice nose, a blemish free face which she envied, his sharp eyes that caught your attention easily. Lea knew these features well because they were part of her bias from the group Nu’est. She didn’t want to have regrets from not talking to this person so as soon as they passed each other, she turned back and walked towards him. When she was close enough to him she said in a meek voice Excuse me! When she noticed he didn’t stop, she said it in a louder voice and went to tap his shoulder.

She grew nervous when he finally stopped and turned to face her. It might sound cheesy but she was breathless the moment that they locked eyes. She did her best to not let it phase her as she took a breath in.

“Excuse me. Are you Jonghyun of Nu’est?” Lea asked curiously.

Jonghyun ended up pulling down his mask he had on and smiled at her. “ 그렇습니다 (Ne, kurosumnida)(Yes I am.)”

Hearing his voice made her happy. “저는 Nu’est 열렬한[열혈] 팬이에요. 싸인해 주세요(I am a fan of Nu’est. May I please have an autograph? )” She said it in the best as she could considering she didn’t know much Korean besides the basics.

All Jonghyun could do was smile at her and her accent. He liked when foreign fans did their best to talk to them in their native language. He decided to try to speak in her native language as well.

“Yes It’s nice to meet a fan.” Jonghyun took Lea’s notebook and pen that she took out of her bag. All Lea could do was smile and say thank you in English and in Korean. He asked for her name to personalize the signature and she helped him spell it out in English. He thought Lea was very pretty. He didn’t want to say anything but he did want to become her friend although they just met. He didn’t know how else to say it but he did feel a small bond with her. He did say in the past that if he ended up liking a fan, he wouldn’t care and try to communicate with them. He felt like this is one of those moments that he should keep up with instead of regretting it later on.

“Would you like photo?” Lea just smiled at him when he asked that. She nodded “Please.”

They took a selca together with Jonghyun doing his V sign and Lea doing the same. She thanked him and said Nu’est Fighting! before wishing him a nice night and started to walk.

Jonghyun reached out to her and grabbed her wrist which stopped her in her tracks. Jonghyun waited until Lea turned around with a confused look on her face before speaking in what little English he knew to her.

“Do you have Kakao? I like to keep in touch with you.” He began turning a light shade of pink but was glad the night sky helped shield his flushing face.

“You..want to keep in touch…with me?” To say Lea was surprised was an understatement. She said yes though because it was something she always wanted to do. She wanted to befriend someone that she never thought would want to befriend her.

They exchanged phones to input the ID of one another into the other's phone. Once finished, they exchanged phones back with a smile.

“Let me message you first.” Although he didn’t fully understand what she said, Jonghyun nodded and jumped slightly at his phone vibrating and making the notification noise.

“Thank you.” He looked at her with a smile on her face. “Can you teach English to me?” He asked shyly.

Lea nodded. “Yes, of course. Can you teach Hangul to me?” He understood the last part and with a reassuring smile, he nodded back at her. “Thank you.”

“I message you later okay?” Lea thought he was cute for doing his best to speak English to her. She nodded at him and waved before saying get home safely and turning away to head towards her hotel.
