Chapter 41:
I Am My Father's DaughterFor thee next week news of Yejin's pregnancy and their engagement spread like wildfire among their friends. Tao showed up at her office the following day with happy tears in his eyes and a giant stuffed teddy bear in his arms to congratulate her. Two days after that D.O. showed up with his extremely pregnant wife who was an absolute treasure to meet. Sooyoung and Yejin immediately clicked, sharing parenting tips and jokes about their partners, D.O. flushing and defending himself as best as he could (though against his strong wife and a gang leader there wasn't much he could do).
By the sixth month of her pregnancy Yejin and Minseok had settled into a new set of normality, that wasn't that different from how they were living before. Though Minseok's place was gradually accumulating baby supplies like clothes of all sorts, a wide range of toys and designer baby bottles. Yejin was weak to the tiny, adorable products and it didn't help when Tao was around cooing at everything with her. She was busy with work, but the excitement of having a child and starting a family was enough to make her overlook the stress of running 3.6.5..
“What do you think of Jinhwan?” Yejin questioned with a piece of jerky sticking out of . It was spiced with chilly pepper and left a pleasant burn on her tongue.
She was pacing Minseok's home office with her phone in hand as she absently chewed on the spicy jerky while reading a list of names. Minseok was going through his files at his desk humming and huh-ing at Yejin's random questions on names.
“It's alright,” he muttered in reply.
Yejin sighed as she removed the jerky from , swallowing what was left behind as she eyes her fiance. He was intently focused on reading some document. Annoyed at the lack of attention she sat the jerky on the coffee table with the bag of the meaty treat before marching over to the desk and pulling the chair back.
“Wha–”
Startled by the distraction Minseok glanced up to see Yejin climbing into his lap as she pushed the file away from his hands. He grunted at the added weight as she made herself comfortable straddling his lap, cellphone still in hand. She locked gazes with him as she pouted up at him like a spoiled child.
He released a long breath as he leaned back in his chair. “Do we really have to pick out a name right now? We still have three months and I'm swamped with work,” he said placing his hands on her sides.
“Yes,” she nodded. “What if I deliver early? I don't want our child to be nameless when they enter the world.”
Minseok's nostrils flared as he released another sigh, hands soothing her sides before moving to the bump that separated them. There was a series of thuds that earned a groan from Yejin.
“I swear they only turn into a ninja when you're around,” she grumbled as the baby continued to move and beat at her stomach. “They're never this active when I'm at work or with Tao.”
Minseok caressed her stomach with a proud smile. “Smart kid already,” he boasted. “Just like their father.”
Yejin snorted and rolled her eyes. “You say that now,” she scoffed.
He stared back at her with half lidded eyes and a pursed mouth, not enjoying the jab at his weakness of children. She smirked back at him.
“Tell me again how the names are working. I wasn't listening earlier,” Minseok said getting back on topic.
Yejin turned her attention back to her phone as she unlocked the device and pulled up the baby name list she had been looking at. “I'm picking the boy name and you get the girl's name. It has to contain part of your name in it. That's the tradition,” she explained happily.
Behind her phone Yejin noticed Minseok cocking his head to the side and she tore her eyes away from the name Jinho that had interested her. His eyes were intently focused on her face, brows slightly furrowed, as his hands rubbed gentle circles on her extended stomach. The baby kicking her again, this time closer to the bladder – Yejin didn't appreciate it.
“That's why your name is Yejin? Because his was Seokjin,” Minseok commented.
With a hum she simply nodded. Looking back to her phone she said, “He told me if I was a boy I would have been called Doyoung.”
“What was your mother's name?” he asked curiously.
Yejin shrugged, and his gaze widened. “He never said, though I think that's because she didn't want me. She wasn't on the birth certificate either, so it's safe to assume things ended badly for them.” She had long since given up caring about what sort of person her mother was, or what happened to her. Poseidon always refused to ever mention the woman which was enough to tell Yejin she wound up on his list, and that was not a place one wanted to be with Poseidon. You were better off dead . . . and she probably was.
“So you're going with Jin for the boy name?” Minseok said changing topics.
“Mhm,” she nodded. “More options.”
“And I have Min and Seok to work with for a girl,” he murmured to himself.
“You should probably stick to just Min. If people work out how we named her – if it is a her – then it wouldn't take much brain power to puzzle your real name together,” she mentioned casually as she scrolled through more boy names.
“Good point.” He huffed and leaned his head against his chair. “Kids complicate things so much.”
“Yes, but not all are bad. Who doesn't like a good challenge?” she smirked. “Oh! What about Gwangjin?” she asked distracted.
Minseok chuckled and shook his head at her.
Yejin pouted.
“Why am I here instead of the father?” Tao inquired for the nth time since Yejin picked him up that afternoon.
She sat down her teacup with
