OST: Freely by Day6

Young K often thought, Won Pil should never be let lose alone in the outside world. Because he could bring a lot of chaos, and the world might end if Day6 members were not there to prevent any serious damages.

This thought strengthened after a certain shocking episode of their usually quite normal life.

Young K was busy preparing for exams and Sung Jin was cleaning the dorm – he might enter his and Jae’s room soon and barked stuffs like “when will you fold your clothes properly???” and other unnecessary stuffs like that. Bottom line, they let the maknaes watch TV since it kept them quiet. Later, he would find out that the maknaes were watching After School Club.

And then afterwards, the four of them sat down for a meal. They were eating jajangmyeon and some chicken, so everyone was enjoying the meal, until Won Pil blurted out, “Do you think Jae Hyung really likes Jimin?”

Do Woon simply choked after hearing it, Sung Jin glared, and Young K said, “Won Pil-ah. Don’t ask that
stupid question when Jae Hyung is around”

It’s actually unwise. When Won Pil didn’t get an answer, he would continue pestering everybody until he got what he wanted to hear.

“But why? Don’t you guys wanna know too?”

“Nope. Not at all” Sung Jin said casually.

“Eat your noodles and cut the crap. He’s gonna be here in a minute and if he hears that, I – don’t know what will happen”

“Something bad might happen” Do Woon said seriously.

“Agreed. We’re dropping this subject”

“Does Jae Hyung like Jimin or not?” Won Pil repeated.

“They’re just friends” Sung Jin tried, hoping Won Pil would be quiet after that.

“Really? But – but that’s boring!”

“Won Pil” Young K warned, “If you want drama, you can always watch it on TV. Do Woon would be happy”

Won Pil said nothing then, and the older ones thought they could have peace again. However, after finishing another drumstick, Won Pil stated, “I think Jae Hyung and Jimin are cute together”

Sung Jin and Young K shared a look and they both drank a glass of water.

“What? Why can’t we talk about it?” Won Pil demanded. He could be persistent on unnecessary topics like this.

“You know dating is forbidden. If someone else heard about this, we might be in big trouble”

“So they’re like......secretly dating?” Won Pil freely concluded.

Young K held his head and inhaled then exhaled.

“Use those imagination skills to write lyrics, rather than creating a drama in your head about Jae Hyung and Jimin” Sung Jin instructed.

“I think they’re nice, too” Do Woon added.

“See? You influenced the maknae, too!” Young K pointed at Won Pil.

At that moment, there were several beeps of the front door lock and Jae appeared.

After recording for ASC, he got a meeting to prepare for the month’s whole episodes, but he was true to his words, saying he’d come home on lunch time.

“Helloooo!” Jae greeted, in that usual chirpy cheerfulness of his, “Did you guys buy for me too?”

“’Course. This is your fill” Young K pushed Jae’s portion.

“Oh, good. I’m starving!”

Sung Jin and Do Woon turned seriously to slurping their own noodles.

“Hyung, how’s Jimin today?” Won Pil asked.

Young K unceremoniously kicked Won Pil’s leg under the table, of which the victim didn’t bat an eyelash, only patting his poor leg, but he waited for Jae’s answer.

“Crazy as usual. Can you believe that she—“

And then followed Jae’s usual tirade of what Jimin said and didn’t say, what Jimin joked about, what Jimin ate and what Jimin .

It’s the usual procedure everytime Jae just got home from meeting Jimin, of which he often affectionately called with her English name, “Jamie”.

Jae didn’t realize that his four friends were uncharacteristically silent, listening intently to him, as Won Pil turned and kept giving the other three meaningful glances.

Probably because Won Pil didn’t stop, the other members started to get the idea into their heads.

Whenever Jae went somewhere without them, like greeting other artists on an event or when he showered, Won Pil would go, “Don’t you all think it’s obvious that Jimin is not just a friend for Jae Hyung?”

It took a lot of Young K’s patience and self-control to not throw Won Pil with whatever things he was currently holding, but then if there were any bruises on Won Pil’s face, people would think he was bullied by his bandmates.

Yet, when you hear about something so much, it’s hard to not start thinking about it.

Does Jae like Jimin more than friends or not?

Jae lived and grew up in the US until he moved to Korea to participate in Kpopstar in 2012. He was the sixth place and Jimin won first place, then they both signed to JYP. He couldn't speak Korean much, and naturally became best friends with Jimin, who was fluent in English, easy going, and communicate with him well.

“Didn’t he sign with our label because Jimin did too?” Won Pil asked to thin air, since no one bothered to answer him. The four of them were already sitting inside their company’s van, while Jae was still outside, saying bye to some people he knew.

“You’re just not going to stop, aren’t you?” Young K asked, feeling tired.

“He signed with our label because our label gave a good offer, Won Pil. Not because he wanted to get closer to Jimin”

“But maybe being in the same company with Jimin was a good plus point too” Won Pil replied, happy that the others were finally “playing” with him.

Jae entered the van at that time, then everyone went silent again.

“Kpopstar people wanna get together for some dinner.  Jimin said I must bring you guys too”

“I think it’s cute how Jae Hyung always listens to Jimin” Won Pil suddenly commented.

Sung Jin officially froze.

Young K shut his eyes.

And Do Woon looked expectant.

“What???” Jae asked back, suddenly thinking Won Pil was being weird.

“It’s nothing. Won Pil is just being random as usual”

“Ok. So are you guys coming or not?”

“I—“ Won Pil began.

“We’re going!” Young K cut quickly, “We’ll go. Of course we’ll go”

Surprised with the enthusiasm, Jae said, “Um.....ok. Sure, great! Let’s go!”

The next day, after breakfast – Sung Jin cooked them all fried rice – Jae dragged his sleepy self to the shower and the other four stayed to tidy up.

“I decide to do a new mission. I’ll try to make Jae Hyung jealous” Won Pil declared.

“Wow” Do Woon exclaimed.

“Ok, this is the time to really stop him” Young K said to Sung Jin.

“.......just let him try” Sung Jin answered after some consideration, making Young K screamed a “WHAT???”

“He won’t stop until he got an answer. What’s the worst that could happen, anyway? It’s not like this could create a fight”

“.....what if there is a fight in the future?”

“Of what, Brian? You’re thinking too much”

“If anything bad happens.........”

“Nothing will. Besides, aren’t you, you know, curious too?”

“No, I don’t! Whether Jae likes Jimin or not, it’s his business! Why should we snoop around his personal business? We’ve never pried on personal stuffs before!”

“Relax. It might be fun” Sung Jin retorted, after he finished washing the dishes and dried his hands.

“Fun? Fun, you said? Ok, I don’t want to deal with the bad stuffs if anything happened. I already warned that this might end up in a fight”

“And like I already said, you’re thinking too much” Sung Jin replied, patting Young K’s shoulder.

Young K threw his hands in the air in exasperation then headed to his room.

Won Pil actually had no experiences in making guys jealous before, but he watched some dramas, so he came up with a simple plan. Praising Jimin, a lot, when Jae was within earshot.

It went like this:

“Jimin is getting prettier lately”

“I think Jimin is the cutest in JYP”

“Jimin’s voice is angelic”

“Jimin is the funniest girl I know”

“Jimin makes everything more interesting”

These praises, with some variations, were said by Won Pil regularly in several weeks, always when Jae was talking about Jimin, or when Jimin passed, or when Jimin talked to someone near them.

And they all watched Jae’s reaction like a hawk, Young K included, because ahem, of course it’s something he’s actually very curious about, but never thought he should ask Jae about it.

At first, Jae only laughed.

Then he frowned, after two weeks passed and Won Pil was still full of praises whenever Jimin was concerned.

Then he finally responded.

“You’re praising Jimin a lot likely” he carefully replied to Won Pil, one evening after they finished practicing in JYP and they met Jimin on the hallway. They chatted for some time before Jimin waved them good night.

“It’s true, I think” Won Pil answered calmly – he can act so well when he put his mind into it.

Frowning but smiling, Jae jokingly asked, “What? Don’t tell me you’re crushing on her?”

Won Pil made a convincing “Sh*t, I’m caught” expression then hurried to leave the building.

“Huh?” Jae exclaimed in confusion, seeing Won Pil’s back.

“Guys, did I miss something?”

His three friends were surprised with the question and they all answered randomly, before walking together with Jae to the parking lot.

“Stalked me enough?” Jimin asked him the next day when they met again at JYP’s building.

“What now?” Jae asked lazily.

Jimin then proceeded to show Jae the pictures in her instagram that was liked by day6kilogram, the band’s official instagram account.

“........but those are not from me”

“Liar!” Jimin accused freely. “You stalked my instagram again, just admit it”

“No, I really didn’t. Last night I went straight to shower after I reached the dorm then passed out. Slept directly”

“Oh” Jimin shrugged. “Then maybe it’s the other boys”

Twice girls passed then Jimin cheerfully greeted them all, leaving Jae staring at Jimin’s phone in his hand. Who liked Jimin’s pictures? Whoever it was, he liked Jimin’s latest updates with the pretty poses only. Did Won Pil like the pictures?

“Is Jimin dating JB?” Won Pil randomly asked, after a long session of rehearsal. Jae was feeling exhausted. For a reason he didn’t know, he couldn’t sleep last night. He usually slept well when he’s tired, passing out directly after he touched his pillow, but last night he tossed and turned in his bed long after Young K slept.

Then he made mistakes during the rehearsal that day, which was a bit out of character. Sung Jin grew annoyed at him but Young K said, “He said he couldn’t sleep last night. Guess that’s why he’s making the mistakes”

Sung Jin felt sorry for speaking so strict to Jae, then quickly suggested them all to have a one hour rest and lunch.

The rehearsal went better after that, but in the end, Jae really felt like he wanted to scream from the Han Gang riverbank. He’s tired. And very annoyed, though he’s not sure why.

Then Won Pil asked that as he was packing his guitar.

He felt like he had it enough that day and spat, “I’m not Jimin’s father. Why don’t you ask her yourself who she’s dating with?”

With that, Jae left the practice room, banging the door closed.

The four guys stood silently for some time before Young K commented, “I think this is getting out of hand”.

“I think Jae Hyung is really mad.....” Do Woon commented, half in concern, half excited.

“I think he’s jealous” Won Pil said, grinning like a maniac.

Somehow they all then turned to Sung Jin, waiting for what he’s going to say.

“This is really getting interesting”

Young K sighed in exasperation, as Won Pil made a winning pose.

Of course, like many other occasions, when you don’t want to see someone, you’d immediately meet that person.

As Jae waited for the elevator and it arrived, Jimin came out.

“Hey! I was just going up to see you guys! My mom cooked some dinner for Day6. You know she’s your number one fangirl, hehehe. Let’s go back to your practice room”

“Oh. Um, we just finished”

“But there’s free food! My mom’s, remember? You usually jump hearing it! Let’s –“

“You go. I wanna go home”

“What? You don’t want my mom’s food? Are you really Jae? Did an alien finally kidnap that silly guy and replace him with someone else?”

Jae smiled but he entered the elevator. Jimin found it weird so she followed.

“Is there something wrong?”

“I don’t know. Maybe” Jae answered lazily, in his half sulking, half bad mood vibe.

“Were there any dramas happening?”

Jae pushed the button for the floor where there were the cafeteria of the building and it stopped in a semi-dark floor, since it was late and empty.

“What do you mean, drama?”

Jimin casually walked into the cafeteria’s direction, shoving one heavy bag to Jae. “Drama as in, did you guys fight?”

They arrived at the cafeteria, where usually there were prepared meals for JYP idols, trainees and employees. But they closed at 10 pm and it was already 11 pm.

“What are you doing here so late?”

“Bringing you guys food. I know you’re practicing late and you usually would grab something to eat afterwards. But too much chicken will really make you look like a chicken. I’m helping your fans to preserve your human face. Plus I want the other guys to eat healthy too, once in a while” Jimin answered with her usual sass as she opened boxes after boxes of her mother’s home-made meals.

It looked really great, Jae had to admit it. There were kimbab, japchae, vegetables, fried chicken and shrimps, and several other tasty delicacies.

“Call the guys down here, it’s nicer to eat here than the practice room” Jimin suggested, giving him a pair of chopsticks.

“Won Pil asked, are you dating JB or not?”

“What???”

“Just answer”

“You know I’m not dating anyone!”

“Really?”

“Duh? I tell you everything. Wouldn’t I tell you if I’m dating anyone? What’s this joke of Won Pil asking me about that?”

“He really did”

“That’s impossible”

“Why is that impossible?”

“Why would Won Pil ask stupid stuffs like that?”

“Because he wants to know”

“Huh? Why didn’t he ask me that himself?”

“Maybe he’s shy?”

“Won Pil? Shy? With me? Dude, speak a language I understand” Jimin said dismissively, swallowing another slice of gimbap, “If you don’t call your friends, I’m afraid we’ll eat everything”

“I think he’s crushing on you”

“Who?”

“Won Pil”

“...........is this your latest form of prank? Can’t you try something that is not this lame?”

“I’m serious”

“Of pranking me?”

“No, of saying that Won Pil is having a crush on you”

“What? Why would he?”

“I have no idea. He’s praising you a lot lately”

“Like what?”

“Like saying you’re getting prettier, cuter.......you have an angelic voice, etc, etc”

“..........can’t say he’s lying”

“Is he your type?”

“Who?”

“Won Pil”

“............ok, come clean. Are you pranking me? What, your phone is on in that jacket and your friends are listening or what?”

“I mean it”

“You mean what? I don’t get it!”

“Is Won Pil your type?”

“Won Pil Oppa is not bad”

“So if he wants to date you, you’d say yes?”

“This is a very weird conversation. Why do I have a feeling that your guys would jump out of nowhere and scream “gotcha!” if I say anything silly?”

“Then who’s your type?”

“..........excuse me, why are we having this weird conversation?”

“Just answer me, Jamie”

“What, my type?”

“Yep”

“Nick Khun Sunbae is my type”

“Oh. Ok”

“Who’s yours?”

“Me? Um........probably Song Hye Kyo sunbaenim”

“Gosh, I love her too! She’s such a goddess, right? I wish she’ll play a drama again soon!”

Jae was strangely unresponsive to that and Jimin frowned.

“Is there really nothing wrong? You’re weird tonight, Jae”

Jae said nothing, but he was staring at her, as if he had never seen her before.

Impatient, Jimin pulled off his glasses, with the non-existent lens.

“What is wrong with you? Are you sick or what?”

Jae blinked and took back his glasses frame.

“Give me that back”

Jimin didn’t fight him but she really felt something was wrong. He’s not the usual chirpy Jae that she had known for the past five years.

“Hey, you know that – that I got your back, right, Jae? If – if it’s hard, or you have problems, you know I’ll help, right? Or at least, I’ll listen. I keep trying to bully you but you know that I’m a friend, right?”

Jae blinked again, then he put his two hands under his jaw.

“So what’s wrong? Is there anything wrong with Day6?”

“......nope. We’re doing ok”

“Then what’s wrong? You look beat earlier. You can talk to me, you know?”

“I know”

“Are you ok?”

“I’m good”

“Hem.......ok, then tell your guys to come here”

“Sure”

Jae called Young K, “Brian, Jimin’s mom cooked for us. Come down to the cafeteria and eat with me and Jimin”

He heard Young K speaking to the other guys, and Won Pil’s “What, are they alone in the cafeteria?”

Some seconds of hushed speaking, then Young K said, “We’re kinda tired. You just go ahead, have supper with Jimin”

“But her mom cooked for all of us!”

“Then bring it home afterwards”

“Are you sure you guys don’t want to—“

“We’re really tired, Jae. We want to hit the bed. You just uh—have a great meal then bring us our portion, ok?”

“Ok”

“You can go home on your own, right?”

“Of course I can” he chuckled.

“Ok then. Say hi to Jimin for us, later Jae”

“See you later”

“Ommo! What if Jae Hyung and Jimin end up together after tonight?” Won Pil asked giddily in the company’s van.

“You really sound like a fangirl now” Young K grumbled.

“I think they like each other”

Young K was positive their life had turned into a reality drama when even the silent Do Woon made that kind of comment.

“I think it’s obvious that Jae likes Jimin” Sung Jin added.

“See! I know I’m not alone in this!” Won Pil responded enthusiastically.

“But the dating ban.....” Do Woon said, in a rather sad tone.

“Will end in 2018” Sung Jin finished.

“I guess Jae will be able to handle it”

The three guys all turned and stared at Young K, completely shocked.

“What? I also think they look great together”

Chaos ensued as Won Pil screamed repeatedly, “SEE, I SAID THAT ALREADY!!!”, as Do Woon said, “Hyung, you think so too?”, and Sung Jin said, “They’re five years different but they look the same age”.

“Hyung, has he ever told you something?” Won Pil asked.

“Jae? We don’t talk about stuffs like that. But he never talks about any other girls, only Jimin. He could go on and on and on, as you guys know”

“I don’t think they know they like each other” Do Woon concluded in that deep voice of his.

“I knew there’s a reason why we got you as a maknae. You’re smart!” Won Pil said, hugging Do Woon, of which the latter tried to get away immediately.

“Do Woon is right. I’m sure those two like each other. They just don’t realise it. But because of Won Pil, I’m sure Jae Hyung realises it now”

“Awww, really hyung? You think so? Awww, I’m so awesome!”

Everyone ignored Won Pil’s craziness, then Young K asked, “What now?”

“We continue watching them” Sung Jin grinned.

“They’re leaving already” Jae told Jimin.

“What? Why?”

“Brian said they’re all tired. I’ll bring this home later”

“That’s too bad. I was hoping we could all eat together”

“You want me to—“

“No need, no need. If they’re tired then they are. Let’s just eat this”

“I like your mom. She’s so nice” Jae said, finally digging in.

“Yep, just like her daughter”

Jae gave her a look and she replied with, “You got a problem with that? She’s my mom, of course I’m like her!”

“I won’t fight it tonight for the sake of the food, ok? Just this once”

Jimin grinned with her cheeks full.

“Sometime I wish I’m one of the guys. Like Day6 guys. Rehearsing and performing together seem so fun”

“Solo is kinda lonely, right?”

Jimin nodded.

“Don’t worry, little Jedi. You’re one of us anyway”

“We should collab one day”

“Who, you and I?”

“Of course not. I mean me and Day6”

Jae made a stabbing move with his chopsticks on one of the meal boxes.

“Ok, you and I”

“For real?”

“Yeah, why not?”

“I think it will be great”

“Will we kill each other in the process, Jae?”

“I certainly hope not”

“Murder is illegal anyway”

“I know, too bad, right?”

“Uh huh”

“You didn’t poison anything, right, Jamie?”

“Just a little, to make you feel even more tired”

“Whatever, I’ll die happily after such a tasty meal”

Jimin laughed.

And Jae thought Won Pil was right.

Jimin was getting prettier. And cuter. And her voice did sound angelic.

And he might have liked her for a while.

So did she, he bet.

It’s kinda narcissistic to conclude that by himself, but he’s pretty sure he’s the closest guy with her right now, despite all her friends in JYP.

But he got a three year no dating-ban, and they had a long way to go.....

“You should do this more often”

Jimin gave him a disgusted look.

“This? Feeding you?”

“Yeah”

“What do I get in return?”

I’ll be your guy?

“I’ll write you a song”

“........really?”

“Really. No joke”

“I’ll ask my mom to cook for you guys once a week”

“Okay” Jae smiled at her, that same bright smile he usually gave when he’s very happy.

Jimin’s heart might skip a bit, but she would rather die than admit it.

They continued their supper then, joking and bickering as usual. But something had shifted. Jimin felt it a little, but she wasn’t sure. Jae, on the other hand, was sure. He might need to subtly tell Won Pil to back off, yet that could wait.

For the time being, he’d enjoy the present moment.

He reached out his hand and patted Jimin’s head affectionately.

“What was that for?”

“The food” Jae grinned, before munching another slice of omelette.

Author’s Note:

So I’m currently so obsessed with Day6, especially Jae. That brings me to watch After School Club, of which he was the MC with Kevin from Ukiss and Jimin, from the same company as him.

Shipping is my hobby so I ship him with Jimin. They are best friends, and so close, keep commenting on each other’s sms and bicker all the time. The cutest thing ever.

Both are awesome singers.

Day6 are awesome, multi-talented musicians too! If you’re not a fan yet, but like CNBLUE, you should try listening to day 6 songs and performances. They’re amazing.
