The King’s Love Letter

It is early Joseon, with King Sejo the world seem finally at peace after years of his ruling. He was ruthless at first poisoning his own nephew, and killing many to become king. He, however strength the country’s monarch, protecting their land and his people suffer less from poverty. King Sejo was a king to be celebrated and loved.

The great King had many children with his Queen and concubines. His greatness had sixteen sons and nine daughters, all from the ages of thirty to one years old. With the King’s power and bloodline, many wanted to steal his power away. While he fought for his country a lot of those who stood behind him cheer him on but also with a knife ready to stab him in the back. This great king has now become old and much weaker. King Sejo in fear of being assassinated or poison he had given no crown prince title to any of his sons. As he grew older and older he became more and more suspicious of each of his sons and their families.

This story is not about King Sejo though; it is about one of his sons, Prince WangEun, the 10^th Prince. Growing up with nine older brothers this Prince grew up freely. He did not worry about anything; his world includes toys, kites, food, and reading stories sold in secret by writers in the street. None of his brothers worry of him wanting to be king as well since he hated to study and had no idea about politics. Nearly all the brothers enjoy his innocent and naïve company. He brought a smile on everyone’s face, even the King who is now weak and confused.

Prince WangEun has a close friend; Seo HanSung son of the highest Right State Councillor. The young man practically grew up with WangEun. The 10^th prince was the youngest of all Princes at the time and had no friend, until he insists that the Councillor bring his son to play. There on out their friendship started. They swordplay, hunted, and flew kites together. When Hansung turned 14 years old instead of choosing path to become a scholar like his father wished he followed his father’s close friend King Sejo’s general, General Ji JaeHa. Hansung follow General Ji’s teaching in material art and sword fighting; later joining into the elite warrior training.

Six years later coming back from his training Hansung met up with Prince WangEun as his personal guard. WangEun felt burdensome from it and hated the idea of his best friend working under him but he also loved the idea since now Hansung will always be by his side.

This is where this story starts a year after Hansung has come back. WangEun and Hansung hang out daily in Prince WangEun’s secret garden behind his chamber. Most of their time is spent back there flying kite and reading under the tree. Now that both are older Prince WangEun often sneaks out to town whether Hansung protest it or not.

Soon without our little Prince WangEun knowing and when he least expected his little care free fate will change; his world of toys and kites will change.
