Foreword
"Kris, I'm scared," Jang-mii pouted as she clung to the hem of the older boy's tunic. They were standing in front of a dilapidated cottage deep in the wilds of Jang-mii's country. The wilds were a dense forest, home to many a beast and creature- and it was strictly forbidden for Jang-mii to enter. However, Kris had been eager to explore; worried for his well-being, Jang-mii had accompanied him and was now regretting the decision.
"Don't be a baby! It's completely safe. I'll protect you!" Kris boasted as he confidently pushed the door of the cabin open. As it gave way, a long creaking sound filled the forest air, and Jang-mii clung closer to Kris. She stuck to him like glue as they stepped inside, looking around the cottage with a mix of fear and wonder.
"This place belongs to someone," Jang-mii murmured nervously. Indeed, despite its exterior, it was clear that the cottage had a resident; various bottles of ingredients were strewn about the room, covering tables, shelves, and the floor. One wall was piled nearly to the ceiling in dusty old tomes, and a recently used bed with dirty sheets lay in the corner. A cauldron was bubbling over the fireplace, filling the cabin with an acrid odor. Jang-mii tugged on Kris' sleeve, eager to leave. "Come on, before whoever lives here finds us!" she cried, tears in her eyes. Kris sighed in disappointment and began to lead the girl out of the cabin.
The two children screamed as a gnarled hand landed on Kris' shoulder and jerked him back. Jang-mii was left in the doorway, terrified, as an old woman dragged the struggling Kris away. The old woman began to chant in an unknown language, and a green light began to emanate from Kris' body. He fell to the floor, convulsing, and reached out for Jang-mii.
"Go get help!" he gasped, and Jang-mii took off out the door. She ran harder and faster than she ever had in her life. Her dress became ripped by brambles and branches, her knees became bloodied from falls, but she still pressed on at full-speed until she reached her castle home, running right up to the knees of her father on the throne.
A full search party scoured the wilds for any sign of the cabin, for when Jang-mii led them to the exact spot that it had been located, it had vanished. The witch had hidden it under some illusion, and despite their effort, Kris was never found, and Jang-mii never forgave herself.
