The Actress

When The Sun Shines

Oh my god, when is she going to shut up? When? If there's any deity up there, please make this woman shut up.

It was a Thursday and on Thursdays, his regular routine involved waking up, drinking a pint of orange juice, going through cases and kicking , if necessary. It was the type of day he expected yesterday before he got the text. But now, nothing from his routine was done (except the waking up and drinking a pint of orange juice part). Instead of being at the office, studying another drug-related case, he was seated next to probably one of the noisiest women in the world.

The Director explained yesterday that his producer friend was in need of someone from the department for a drama. At first, everyone thought Hyuk was casted as an actor.

"Who wouldn't cast him? Look at him," remarked Inspector Jung with disdain, "He is digustingly too handsome for his own good."

"Yeah, I can imagine him acting opposite Song Hye Kyo already."

"No he's not acting," replied Director Jo Si Hyun, "They just need someone to demonstrate the basics: arresting criminals, how we chase drug lords, stuff like that."

"Sort of like a mentor?"

"A consultant, if you will," answered the Director. He faced a confused Hyuk. "Basically, you'll just show them how we do our job."

"But...why me?" asked Hyuk, "I...is it really necessary for me to be there?"

"My top officers need to stay in the office, Detective Lee," answered Director Jo, "I've looked over schedules and saw that you have more time to spare. And besides, my producer friend asked me for the rugged detective/police type and you were the first person who came to mind."

Hyuk internally shivered at the comment, as well as the giggling and laughter among his colleagues. He saw the female interns whispering amongst themselves and he suddenly wished he could melt into a puddle.

"Why do you look so embarassed?" asked Inspector Jung, "This is an honor! You'll somewhat be part of a drama."

But if it that role involved sitting beside this loud lady, he'd rather not consider it an honor. Given, she was stunning, but the loud mouth sort of ruined her.

He couldn't even remember her name. Was it Kim Sun? Kim Sunny? Kim Sun Yee? All he knew was that her last name was Kim.

As she babbled vigorously, complaining about her blush, he couldn't help but wish this day would end. He didn't know if he could stand another minute with her in this car. But if he was going to be honest, he still couldn't get over the fact that she was pretty.

"You have the right to remain silent, the right to refuse to testify--"

"I asked what this is about! Is that a hard question to ask?"

The actress flailed her arms around as Detective Lee stared at the handcuff he had just placed on her wrist. Why was she complaining again? Wasn't he supposed to teach her how to act like a criminal? He just wanted to get his job done.

"You asked me to show you how I act out an arrest," he answered.

She looked at him, exasperated. "I just...I asked you to show me, not actually handcuff me. Your criminal's over there!"

She wildly pointed at the other actress being attended to by the makeup artists. The second actress waved at them. This actress (named Kim Sun Hee, apparently) looked at him exasperatedly, proving her point.

"Oh, is she the criminal?" asked Hyuk, "You looked more like one. Sorry." Immediately, he grabbed his key to unlock the handcuffs. Kim Sun Hee, on the other hand, rubber her hands and glared at him.

"Don't I look like a detective?" she demanded.

Who's she kidding? he wondered, staring at that white leopard print coat she had.

Detective Lee couldn't believe what she said. "At 1st glance," he looked away, "At 2nd glance," he looked away again, "And 3rd glance, you look like a criminal."

"How dare you?" said an agitated Sun Hee, "What makes you think I'm a criminal?" she then looked at him again, this time pouting her red lips, "Did I steal your heart or something?"

She was no different from the women he encountered in bars and questionable drug dens.

"You look like the hostess of a gambling den," he told her, "From head to toe."

"I just look like one!" she insisted, "I'm working undercover. Undercover! We're..."

After she said the word undercover with much emphasis, Lee Hyuk out, pretending he was listening when really, he wasn't. For a girl, she talked way too much. If there was one thing he hated, it was women who talked too much.

"...director, who is this guy?" she was now asking, "Why is he so rude?"

The director came forward with the producer. "Ah, haven't I introduced you two?" he asked, "Well, that's our consultant, a detective from a violent crimes unit."

She was staring at him in disbelief.

"I'm Lee Hyuk from Gangnam Police Station," he introduced himself, extending a hand.

The actress seemed stunned at the sight of him, despite shouting and complaining about him earlier. He couldn't understand why stared at him with such wonder, but he also couldn't understand why he looked at her with undeniable awe. Was it becase she was too pretty for her own sake?

"Ah, Lee Hyuk," she said, finally shaking his hand.

"I heard that," he replied.

"So, you're a detective?"

"Yes, the director said so."

She took her hands away gently and crossed her arms, staring at him. "You don't look like one," she said, "You look like the host of a gambling den."

"I beg to differ," he countered, "I look like my job."

"Well, you are handsome," she commented, "I guess detectives should be handsome."

From the way she was staring at him, he wasn't sure if she was flirting with him or trying to send him mixed signals. Given the countless times he's had to deal with women fascinated with his looks, he was no stranger to this type of reaction. But he also wanted it to stop before Kim Sun Hee does something she might regret.

"I'll get going now," he told her, "I have to text my DA."

"But you have to teach me again."

"I already taught you how," he said, "Just put the handcuff, tell them they should shut up, and be mean. That's it."

Before she could even talk, he saluted at her and proceeded towards the nearby tent, ignoring her calls after him. Fortunately, the casting director ushered her away, saying she had a scene. He knew she'd probably punch him when he had to interact with her again, but right now, he just wanted to be far from people. Besides, he still had stuff to do. Answering emails while on the set seemed like a good idea.

As he stood from afar, however, he couldn't help but remember that spark the actress had in her eyes.

She was a fesity one, that was for sure.

He chuckled.

A/N: I know myself as a writer, I have this tendency to go overboard and end up writing an entire drama (don't believe me? you should see my take on Scarlet Heart Ryeo) so I decided I'm not going to go full-ono mode with this one. When I go on full-mode, I get all angsty but since I want this one to be fluffy, expect snippets from Sunny and Grim Reaper's new life. Memorable ones, I promise, I'll write about those that would matter <3

Chapter 40: This is a gem of a story! Your writing drew me into their world. It's so hard to allude subtly yet obviously to Shin and Eun Tak, but you did it with such finesse. The cliffhangers and pacing of the story were perfect. Thank you for this wonderful work! My favourite parts were the conversations Hyuk had with his mysterious friend at the bar who always had hard-boiled eggs ;) So clever.

Chapter 40: I absolutely love this story. I started and just could not stop! It was brilliantly written and all the emotions were portrayed so well. My favourite chapters were definitely when hyuk ans sun hee were confession to each other. Totally gave me butterflies.

And the character connections and how they tied in together were integrated so well!

Looking forward to reading your other stories !
