Be My Fake Girlfriend

The new day started and it was the day Hana started working as a maid in Donghae’s apartment. She accidently woke up late today due to exhaustion but fortunately Donghae hadn't woken up yet, so after she washed up, she headed directly to the kitchen to prepare for their breakfast.

The moment she was serving pancakes that she’d made on the dining table, did Donghae appear with his casual t-shirt and grey shorts. She noticed that his hair was still wet, showing that he just finished taking a shower.

“Morning!” she greeted him with her cheerful voice.

“Morning,” he replied with a smile as he approached her. Once he stood beside her, he suddenly leaned his face towards her, making the startled Hana to back away in an instant. “My morning kiss?” he grinned teasingly before puckering his lips and that made her cheeks flush red as she immediately pushed him away.

“What do you think you’re doing?” she said in panic, her cheeks were as red as tomato.

“What? Don’t you remember you’re my girlfriend?” he wore an innocent face, amusement hinted in his voice.

“Correction; fake girlfriend, okay?” she rolled her eyes as she reminded him about that though she knew that he never forgot.

Donghae laughed in response before his attention went to the food on the dining table. “What did you make?” he asked as he pulled the chair and took a seat at the dining table.

“Pancake,” she answered briefly as she poured coffee into a cup for Donghae.

“You don’t want to eat?” Donghae asked when she was about to walk away from the dining table.

“It’s okay. I’ll eat later.”

“Take a seat,” he instructed. “I hate eating alone,” he added.

“....Is it okay? But I’m just a maid,” she asked hesitantly. Maids weren't supposed to eat with their employers, right?

"You're a maid or not, I hate eating alone," he said in monotone but there was a hint of strictness in his voice. "Take a seat."

With that, Hana obediently did like what she was told to and slowly started eating together with him.

They ate in silence for a moment before Donghae broke the silence.

“You sure you don’t want to go to the party tonight?” he asked.

“Do you want me to go?” she inquired.

He shrugged. “I won’t force you. Besides, I don’t feel like going too,” he said. “Anyway, are you okay being a maid?”

“Well, I’ve owed a lot of your money. Maybe this is one way to repay your deeds for me,” she said then added. “It’s okay if you don’t want to pay me monthly though.”

“What are you talking about? You agreeing to be my fake girlfriend was more than enough for me. Nope, I’ll pay you monthly,” he responded.

“Gomawo,” she smiled gratefully at him. “You’re so kind. But a little bit annoying,” she muttered at the last part.

“What did you say?” he looked at her threateningly – he’d heard what she just said.

“Nothing,” she grinned, flashing him an innocent face.

Donghae didn’t reply but narrowed his eyes at her before he continued eating.

Once they were done eating, Donghae went to the living room and watched television meanwhile Hana washed the dishes in the kitchen. Once she was done, she made her way to the living room.

“Can I sit?” she asked.

Donghae broke his gaze from the television just to look at her briefly before he answered, “Of course. Do you even need to ask that?” he continued watching television back.

“Of course I have to ask. This isn’t my house after all. Moreover, I’m just a maid here,” she said as she took a seat beside him on the couch.

“Just make this house as your own. I trust you,” he said in a matter-of-fact tone.

Hana couldn’t help but smile upon hearing his words. “Thank you,” she mumbled. Somehow, she felt like she wasn’t just a maid in this house. Wait, of course she wasn’t. She was his fake girlfriend as well.

They watched television in silence. That was until Hana decided to speak.

“Donghae sshi, can I ask you something?”

“Sure.”

“Why don’t you live with your parents?”

“Hmm...Because I want to be independent. But the main reason is, I was tired hearing my mom’s naggings everyday telling me non-stop to get married,” he said.

“Do you often visit them?”

“Not that often. Once or twice a month, maybe.”

“Ahh,” she nodded in understanding.

Suddenly Donghae’s phone rang and he immediately picked up his phone.

“Omma,” he said over the phone after knowing that the caller was his mom.

“Donghae ah, are you coming to the party tonight?” his mom’s voice was heard from the other line.

“No, I’m going out with my friends.”

“Mwoya~ I did tell you to go and bring your girlfriend along, didn’t I? I’ve promised all my friends to introduce your girlfriend to them.”

“She can’t go either. She has something to settle on,” Donghae lied.

“What is it that she has to settle on? It’s not that urgent, right?”

“It’s urgent―”

“Nope. I don’t want to hear anything. If you two don’t come tonight, I’ll arrange you with my friend’s daughter even though I know you have a girlfriend.”

“Omma!” Before he could say something more, the elder already hung up the call. “Aish!” he was about to throw his phone away but he held himself. Heaving a deep sigh, he ran his hand through his hair then raked it in frustration.

“What’s wrong?” Hana asked in question upon seeing his current state.

“Whether we want it or not, we have to go to the party,” Donghae said instead of answering her actual question.

“Why?”

“My mom threatened me to arrange me with her friend’s daughter if we didn’t go.”

“What?” she looked a little shocked. “Is the party that important till we have to go?”

Donghae shrugged.  “My mom said she’s promised her friends to introduce you to them.”

“Aish, that’s what I don’t want to hear,” she sighed.

“By the way..." Donghae paused and she looked at him. "I missed to see you wearing heels,” he said with a hint of amusement.

Hana blinked blankly upon hearing that but her eyes became narrowed once her brain started registering the meaning behind his words. “You mean you missed seeing me stumbling because of heels, right?” she looked at him threateningly.

“Oh, how do you know?” he pretended to be shocked, having fun teasing her.

“You...!” she reached out as if she wanted to strangle him in which he quickly backed away and they ended up burst into laughter afterwards.

Time flew like an arrow and in a blink of an eye, the sunshine that brightened up the sky now had disappeared and was replaced with a full moon, brightening the beautiful night sky which was full with stars.

And now, here they were, in front of the gigantic archway that was decorated with shimmering adornments, cheerfully welcoming guests and corporates. Hana, in which it was the first time for her to attend a big party like this, couldn’t help but gaped at the sight before her.

After parking the car, Donghae and Hana walked passing the gate together to the red carpet pathway that led to the mansion where the party was held.

“Don’t walk too fast,” Hana grumbled as she struggled walking in the heels that she hadn’t touched for a week while clinging into Donghae’s arms for support―she tried to walk as casually as possible though, but it kinda failed.

Donghae rolled his eyes as he slowed down his pace to catch up with her pace which resembled a tortoise’s.  By the way, Hana now was wearing a short sleeveless black dress which Donghae had bought when they were shopping together before. Meanwhile Donghae looked very handsome in his black tuxedo. Back at home earlier, Hana was stunned the moment her eyes laid on him in a tuxedo. It was her first time seeing him in formal clothes so it wasn’t surprising that she was awed at his handsomeness.

The well-dressed receptionists bowed as the pretend couple reached the entrance. The moment they entered the mansion, they found a few eyes looking at them but it ended up almost all eyes were on them when Donghae’s mom suddenly called out his son’s name loudly as she approached them.

“I knew you two will come,” the elder said and ushered the youngsters to her friends who were gathering in a small group and were looking over at them. Once they stood before the elders, they greeted and bowed to them.

“Like what I told you just now, this is my future daughter in-law, Choi Hana,” Mrs Lee, Donghae’s mom, said, introducing Hana to her friends warmly.

“Whoaa, she’s more beautiful than what I imagined,” One of Mrs Lee’s friends said, looking at Hana adoringly.

Hana blushed as she bowed slightly for the compliment she just received.

“As expected, you’re really good at finding beautiful girls, huh, Donghae?” teased another rich ahjumma.

“Of course,” answered Donghae proudly as he casually wrapped an arm around Hana’s waist, making her stiffen in her position.

“My chance to get you as my son in law has lost, I see,” said another rich ahjumma as they all laughed afterwards.

‘Ahh, so what Donghae said about him being a son in law material is true,’ Hana thought and nodded to herself.

“By the way, where’s your daughter? Let’s introduce her to them,” Mrs Lee said to the ahjumma who had last spoken earlier.

“Oh right, but where’s she?” The ahjumma looked around the mansion and once she found her daughter, she called her out by name in which if Hana wasn’t mistaken, Yoona. Yes, she called her daughter Yoona.

The girl named Yoona prettily approached them with a questioning look on her face and the moment Hana laid her eyes on the girl, she became stunned. The girl was so beautiful; she was wearing a one-shoulder short pink dress and her straight hair fell down her shoulder, her heels that were in the same color with her dress made her look taller.

“Yes, mom?” Yoona spoke once she reached them.

“Well, see this handsome man here? He’s the one whom I always talked about to you. Lee Donghae,” Yoona’s mom introduced Donghae to her.

“Oh...” Yoona responded with a smile. Hana could notice her eyes turned into love-shaped once her eyes laid on Donghae. “Hello. Nice to meet you. I’m Yoona,” she held out her hand towards Donghae and Donghae took her offered hand and gave a slight shake.

“I'm Lee Donghae,” he said with a small smile.

“Donghae, she’s the one I planned to arrange you with before. Isn’t she beautiful?” Mrs Lee spoke.

“Yeah...” Donghae replied almost half-heartedly.

At the moment, Hana felt small among them. She felt undeserved to stand around them especially as Donghae’s girlfriend when his supposed future wife looked like a goddess, unlike her who was messy in real life.

“Maybe we should leave them alone. Let them know each other further,” Mrs Lee said to her friends in which to Hana's ears, it felt like the ones the elder addressed 'them' to were only Donghae and Yoona. And soon, they walked away from the younger ones. Hana felt like walking away from Donghae and Yoona as well but then where would she go? She didn’t even have friends among the elites here. And she was so scared to be alone without Donghae by her side, especially in this unfamiliar atmosphere.

“So, who’s she?” Yoona started off the conversation by asking about Hana who stood beside Donghae.

“Choi Hana. My girlfriend.” Donghae replied, placing his hand on Hana's back. Hana stiffened a little at his touch before she awkwardly bow
