Chapter 4

The Scarlet In Her Eyes

Autumn leaves scattered the slightly muddy ground, crinkling in protest when the chrome-haired girl walked across the pavement that was brushed with grey, just like the sky that day. Wisps of clouds floated lazily on top, and the trees rustled in the wind. The sky was dim, thunder rumbling occasionally, enough though not a drop of rain had fallen yet. A storm had been brewing since the early morning, and everyone was decked out in thicker clothing than usual. On the opposite side of the road, a hat fell off a little boy's head, and Moonbyul couldn't help but snicker as the child stumbled across the road to retrieve his precious hat. She dug her hands further into the pockets of her jacket, searching for more warmth.

It was cold.

She shook her head and hastily wrapped her pastel blue scarf tighter around her neck, a smile still tugging at her lips. Not many people were outside, considering it was still pretty early in the morning, plus it was cold. Her boots shuffled against the pavement, kicking away any leaves that blocked her path. Her eyelids fluttered shut, a breathy huff escaping from her lips.

A shrill beep blared at her sensitive eardrums, preventing her from zoning out further. She quickly whipped around, her eyes widening at the sight of the red truck speeding towards the child, who looked absolutely terrified. She watched as the owner of the truck slammed down on the deceleration pedal, the look of pure fear glossing across his eyes.

The truck was definitely not going to stop in time.

Throwing all other thoughts out the window, she zipped across the road at superhuman speed, grabbing the little boy in her arms and placing him safe on the pavement. The wheels of the truck skidded to a halt, and the driver hurriedly jumped off the truck, onto the pavement.

"Oh god, are you both okay? I couldn't break in time, and I swear I was about to hit the kid-"

"We're fine," Moonbyul replied, brushing off the kid's jacket. "Right?" she smiled down at the boy, who nodded in response.

"Thank goodness," the driver mumbled, rubbing the back of his nape. Moonbyul watched as he shuffled back to the truck, and continued on his way.

She felt a tug on her jacket, a smile gracing upon her lips. She squat down, crossing her arms over her knees. The boy couldn't be any older than nine, and she hated to admit it, but she kind of adored little children. She knew, however, that he had saw her run across the road at a speed that couldn't be human. Glancing around to make sure no one else was around, she turned her attention back to him.

"You won't tell anyone about what you just saw, right?"

The child looked down at the ground and nodded shyly, playing with his hat behind his back.

Moonbyul chuckled, reaching up to ruffle the boy's hair.

"Good boy."

His eyes lit up like a Christmas tree all of a sudden.

"Are you a superhero?"

"No, I'm not. I'm not a good person."

"But you saved me."

The chrome-haired girl crinkled her nose and playfully pinched the boy's cheek before getting up, sending him a wink before walking off.

Classes passed by in a blur, considering all she did in her classes so far was to doodle on her notebook. She was kind of pissed to admit it, but she was looking forward to the last lesson of the daymath class. Just like she had predicted, it was raining really heavily. The school was somewhat eeriely quiet, and the rain wasn't exactly doing much to bring up the gloomy atmosphere in the school.

"Hey, Moonbyul!"

Of course, one of the only guys that would never let his mood get affected by anything else. The usual teenage-boy cologne was overpowering her senses, just like his huge, shiny smile. But it wasn't as if she disliked him or anything.

She was just a tiny bit pissed at the fact that he might be dating Yongsun.

"Hey, Eric," she allowed the tips of to curl up into a grin, and since she was feeling nice that day, she decided to throw in a friendly wave as well. "What's up?"

"Nothing much. Math, right?"

"Yeah. Miss Kim's," the name rolled off her tongue like velvety chocolate, and she felt sprinkles of electricity crawl up her spine. Even the simple act of saying Yongsun's name made Moonbyul feel weird. Needless to say, she didn't really enjoy it. But then again, she couldn't think of anything else besides that god-awful cologne Eric was wearing.

"I know," he replied with a short chuckle, running his hand through his hair. "I have an appointment at the hospital today. Since I'm on my way out of school, and the entrance is near Miss Kim's class, mind if I walk with you?"

She hesitated for a split second, but nodded anyway. She wanted to ask why he had to go to the hospital, but she didn't want to pry into his business.

The grin on his face lit up further, reminding her of the little boy she had saved from the incoming truck earlier. "Ladies' first," he gestured towards the front, earning a playful eyeroll from Moonbyul.

They didn't really have anything to talk about, and Moonbyul wasn't exactly a talkative person when around humans in general. Even the cheery boy that Eric was couldn't make the slightly awkward atmosphere between them fade away. After a few minutes, Eric probably mustered up enough courage, clearing his throat and turning to her as they walked.

"So... how's school been?"

Moonbyul nearly choked on air as she tried suppressing a chuckle. Most of the time, people wouldn't attempt to break through her icy-cold demeanor, they would give up after the first try. But look at this guy, he was trying to break through her shield as much as possible. As much as she disliked his cologne, she had to admit that Eric was a pretty nice guy, and that she genuinely liked his personality. She even kind of enjoyed his presence.

"School?"

"I mean, do you like prefer this school or your previous one?"

She bit her lip and a crease formed on her forehead. Pretending to sigh, she shook her head.

She felt like messing with him a bit.

"My previous school-"

The grin on his face faded a little.

"-wasn't for me. Everyone's so much friendlier here," she finished, a smug smile on her face.

"Really? Are you talking about me?"

"Yeah, yeah. You included."

"Awesome!" he pumped his fist shortly into the air, attracting a couple weird stares from the other students walking past them. "I'm glad you- Oh, we're here! Guess I'll see you tomorrow?"

"Tomorrow," she agreed, showing him a messy wave before her attention was torn away from him. She could see that certain Math teacher through the window. Nearly the whole class had already arrived, but her attention was now wholly on Yongsun, and she was unable to tear her gaze away from her. On top of that, her scent was extremely enticing, as usual. Her chocolate locks were pulled up into a messy ponytail today, with tiny tufts of hair poking out on the sides. And of course, she had a pair of rimmed circle glasses on. If there was a competition for the most adorable-looking teacher, she would've definitely came in first place.

She was concentrating on writing something on the boardprobably some math equationsMoonbyul pulled at the sleeves of her oversized jacket, and knocked at the door, clearing .

Yongsun stopped writing on the board, turning her attention to the sudden sound at the door, along with the rest of the students. Her lips were pursed, and she had a hard expression on her face, but it softened a little when her eyes met with Moonbyul's.

Jeez, even a simple gaze made Moonbyul feel giddy.

"You're right on time," Yongsun shot her a lopsided grin, gesturing for her to come in. Her voice was as smooth and sweet as red velvet, and Moonbyul felt her knees tremble a tiny bit. "I just got news that my math rep is sick today. Could you be a sweetheart and help me distribute those papers on my desk?"

A sweetheart.

She said sweetheart.

"Okay," the chrome-haired girl managed to croak out, tearing her gaze away from Yongsun, trying to look at whatever that wasn't her. She wasn't usually one to get very distracted, but she had to manually force herself to remember that Yongsun just gave her a task and that she was supposed to do it now. She briskly walked towards her desk on the front row and slid her books onto the table, tugging up her jacket before grabbing the stack of papers and passing them out between the students.

Sweetheart, she said sweetheart.

Look, despite her having a cold side and such, she was a huge er for pet names. And even more so this time, because Yongsun was the one who said it. She knew Yongsun wasn't directly calling her sweetheart, but still. Sitting down, Moonbyul blew a breath of hot air into her palms and rubbed them together, cupping her cheeks afterwards. The soft pitter-patter of the rain against the window along with the occasionally tinkling of stationery and hushed murmurs between students gave off a sort of relaxing ambience, and Moonbyul felt her eyelids droop towards the ground.

Thud. Thud. Thud.

Her ears perked up at the unfamiliar rhythm and several voices, and she furrowed her brows in the process, blinking several times in order to get rid of the slight blur in her eyes. Unfolding her arms as she stretched, a small yawn escaped . Recovering to her senses, she finally realised she was still in her Math class, slumped against the seat. Wait a minute, did she just fall asleep?

Crap.

Glancing up, she found herself face-to-face with no one other than Yongsun herself, and the noise was simply her tapping on Moonbyul's table.

"Uh-" she began, a sense of guilt erupting in her body. She tugged against her jacket and slumped further into her seat, trying to hide the burst of red that coloured across her cheeks. "Where is everyone?"

The hard expression on Yongsun's face immediately switched to a much softer one, and she erupted into a giggle. It was spectacular to watch, and it amazed Moonbyul to no end, for the way Yongsun's eyes turned into brilliant crescents that sparkled and the way her fluffy cheeks would stand out even more when she laughed. Even more dazzling was her laugh, for it made the chrome-haired girl feel a spark ignite and travel down her spine.

"You slept through the whole class, sweetheart. It just ended."

There it was.

The final cherry on the cake.

Sweetheart.

But why was Yongsun laughing at her for sleeping through class? Weren't teachers supposed to be upset when you sleep through their classes? Moonbyul furrowed her brows, giving Yongsun a questioning look.

"No, I'm not mad at you," Wow, sometimes the way Yongsun could tell what she was thinking scared her a little. "But is my class really that boring?" Yongsun grumbled, the expression on her face switching to a disappointed one.

Guilt started to wash over Moonbyul again, and she hurriedly shook her head. "It's not like that! I was just tired-"

"Don't worry, I was just kidding," Yongsun cleared and looked around before dusting off and pulling up a nearby chair. "Let me see the math problems you're having trouble with."

Music started blasting out of Yongsun's pocket, which Moonbyul recognised to be some sort of pop song that was currently pretty popular.

"Sorry, you can take your stuff out while I handle this call," Yongsun motioned, getting up and walking out of the classroom with her phone in her hand.

Moonbyul shrugged and grabbed her math textbook, flipping to some random page that might seem reasonably hard for a highschooler. Of course, she didn't have any problems with math, considering she's graduated both highschool and universities alike during the couple centuries she had been alive, but she simply wanted a reason to spend time with Yongsun alone.

And she didn't exactly want to eavesdrop on Yongsun's conversation, but when you're a vampire with supersonic hearing, you can't really choose when you want to hear something or not. For example, she could hear the rumble of a large container truck passing by on a highway about ten miles away. Sometimes you hear the weirdest things from people that mutter under their breath, but she wasn't going to mention any of that.

Anyway, back to Yongsun.

"I'm glad to hear that, Eric. I'll see you when you're back tonight from the hospital, okay? Bye!"

Moonbyul felt her eyebrows furrowing.

See Eric? Tonight?

But she had no time to think further, because Yongsun was making her way back to the desk. Moonbyul sat up and grabbed a pen, a smile apparent on her lips.

Math was a bore, but watching Yongsun's eyes light up like a child whenever she finished explaining each question was entertaining, to say the least. An hour had passed, and the gloomy, grey rainclouds that hid the sun away were finally clearing up. Sunlight filtered into the panes of the windows, littering across the classroom in scatters that seemed to mimic the pattern of a tiger's fur. Crickets were beginning to chirp once again, celebrating the end of the afternoon pour. It was no longer cold, so Moonbyul chose to sling her jacket across the back of her chair for now.

Of course, when you're passing stationery around and flipping pages together, you're bound to brush fingers for a couple times, whether accidental or not. And everytime they touched, Moonbyul couldn't help but secretly smile to herself when she felt the tinge of electricity break and scatter from her fingertips to the rest of her body.

"Unfortunately," Yongsun started, tapping her password into her phone with nimble fingers. "I would love to spend more time explaining these sums to you, but I have a meeting," she pouted, in a voice that Moonbyul swore was a little whiny, even. Yongsun paused to examine the look on Moonbyul's face before adding, "Teacher's meeting, it's compulsory every Friday."

"Right."

Yongsun slid her phone back into her pocket, moving her chair back to its original location. "If you have any more questions, you can message my Facebook, It's not limited to math, but just remember that I at anything science-ish. I'll write it down somewhere-" her brows turned towards the ground in a furrow, and she hesitated for a moment. "Wait. No, I don't check Facebook a lot anymore."

Moonbyul watched as the brunette took out her phone once again, and handed it to her.

"Type in your number, I'll send you a text later so you know it's me."

Uh, what? Moonbyul couldn't believe what she just heard. Okay, Moonbyul. Chill. She only asked for your number because she wanted to make sure you weren't struggling with subjects and to answer your questions about schoolwork, right?

Right.

The chrome-haired girl tried her best to keep a straight face, complying with Yongsun and typing in her phone number. She couldn't deny the burst of exhilaration and happiness that surged through her body was kind of weird, but she liked the feeling, somewhat. She handed the phone back to Yongsun, and slowly packed her things as she watched Yongsun slide her papers and stationery back into her own bag. Every single action Yongsun did seemed elegant by itself, and Moonbyul was pretty sure that Yongsun was some sort of royalty back in her previous life or something like that.

"Sorry,  but I gotta go first, sweetie. I'm gonna be late if I stay a bit longer," Yongsun's lips curled into her signature lopsided grin, and Moonbyul realised she looked a little like a certain Pokemon when she did. It was adorable, she had to admit.

Okay, she really has to stop thinking that her teacher was adorable. It was weird.

"Alright," Moonbyul replied, tying her jacket around her waist, unfolding one of the sleeves. "I guess I'll see you on Monday?"

"Sure. Just make sure you don't fall asleep in my class again," Yongsun winked, a smug smile on her lips. She tossed Moonbyul a short wave, before briskly walking out of the classroom, out of Moonbyul's sight.

A short silence ensued, with Moonbyul slowly zipping up her bag, until she felt a vibration in her pocket. It was a text from an unknown number, but the content in it made her chuckle, regardless of how short it was.

"Have a good weekend, see you on Monday!

- Yongsun"
