of hazelnuts & brain cells
july 28th, 2016
With her head resting on her arms, Dajung let her mind float.
The day she had deeply longed for had finally flown to her – the day she would stand on a stage and sing for people. People she hoped to enchant with the voice many claimed to be the voice of an angel that came from Heaven.
She was exhilarated. However, she stood in a precarious position.
On the one hand, she had knowledge of how hard the girls had worked to put a good performance for the people that would judiciously watch their showcase. On the other hand, she dreaded the idea of possibly befoul the choreographies or forgetting the lyrics and become netizens’ new laughing stock.
The girl shifted in her bed, heaving a heavy sigh. Behind her rested Kyulbin who seemed to be sleeping peacefully unlike her who had a night filled with various thoughts and riddles that didn’t have a resolution and only seemed to worsen when she tried solving them.
She was the first member up. The clock on her phone read 7:48 am.
Quietly, with the utmost care, Dajung left the room she shared with the two maknaes not wanting to possibly wake them up, as she didn’t wish to interrupt Saeron’s dreams nor Kyulbin’s. While passing Jangmi and Meilin’s room, she lightly relaxed remembering how Meilin often doesn’t sleep and Jangmi sleeping soundly.
After making herself a steaming cup of hazelnut cappuccino, she sat cross-legged on the sofa that faced their recently bought television to celebrate the trifling accomplishment of ‘Would U’ achieving 10 million views which she .
A re-run of ‘Doctor Crush’ latest episode played. Not a drama she particularly enjoyed but a good substitute for the silence that engulfed the dorm.
“Oh,” a voice said as they noticed Dajung’s stagnant figure on the couch, “Shouldn’t you be sleeping, maomao?”
Dajung, stripped from her thoughts, raised her head to encounter a perplexed looking Meilin, “I couldn’t sleep,” Dajung tightly grabbed her mug, “Did I wake you up, unnie?”
“No,” Meilin simply answered, “I have been up for almost an hour now.”
Dajung pointed at Meilin’s oversized shirt, “And those stains are from what?”
The girl looked down at her clothes and bit her lower lip, “Acrylic paint.” Meilin responded, “I was painting before I heard you.”
Meilin’s overall existence amazed Dajung. The ability to correctly function on less than two hours of sleep was already a feat in itself. However, Meilin went beyond that, being able to exceed at everything she did despite her brain perhaps begging for an extra hour of rest.
“I hadn’t painted in a long time,” Meilin confessed, “I saw the supplies in front of me and decided to quickly improvise something. It was actually relaxing as it allowed me to stop thinking about our showcase and the interview.”
Cutely, Dajung nodded, “Do you still want to major in Fine Arts?”
“Yes,” Meilin said, “And I’m considering minoring in Mathematical Sciences. What about you?”
Dajung shrugged her shoulders, “I’m still not too sure. I want to major in Asian Languages and Civilizations, but, the Linguistics course is also fascinating.”
“Do both,” Meilin said as she headed towards the kitchen, “I think you’ll excel at both. You have a gift when it comes to languages, you speak four languages two of which you speak fluently and the other two better than the majority of people that know them.”
At the sudden and unexpected compliment, Dajung’s cheeks flushed a pastel tint of pink, “I wouldn’t have the time for such thing. Being an idol is going to restrict the amount of time I’ll have to focus on my studies.”
In a heartbeat, Meilin came back from the kitchen, freshly brewed coffee in her hand and a bagel in the other, “I can’t argue with the truth. However, ShinCom perhaps by the time we enroll in University will create sub-units or debut another group.”
“Perhaps,” Dajung blinked in realization, “They are money-hungry after all.”
The conversation between the group’s official introverts carried on, various subjects being spoken about. Dajung’s love life and its nonexistence, Meilin’s lack of affection, Park Shin Hye’s character in ‘Doctors,’ the questions that could be asked in their Debut Showcase, when their first comeback would be, were some of the many conversation topics that translated into a two-hour conversation.
“How can you talk for so long?” Both girls raised their heads and followed the voice’s direction, encountering a messy-haired Jangmi, “I don’t understand, honestly. You can barely talk about our debut album, but you could perhaps talk for an entire day about brain cells.”
Meilin squinted her eyes, “It’s not our fault that brain cells are actually interesting, unlike our debut album.”
Dajung covered as she muffled her own laugh, “That’s cruel, Meilin,” Jangmi chuckled, “Don’t be so blunt about the album’s quality.”
“Or rather lack of it,” Meilin remarked.
Jangmi let out a sigh, admitting defeat upon Meilin’s bluntness, “Are the maknaes still sleeping?”
