Evergreen

Description

Love is like a tree; from the moment it sprouts from the ground as a sapling you have to nurture it every day until it grows thicker and taller, and its roots get stronger. But when the sinister winter season comes by, the frost withers its leaves and everything comes tumbling down.

But we are different; winter can come and go as it pleases, as we are immune to its frozen wrath.

We are Evergreen.

Hello everyone! I'm writing this one-shot to enter as a contestant in the "The Rabbit Hole" writing contest!

Also, thank you Mystic Multi-Shop for the poster and background!

Foreword

"Baekhyun, can I ask you something?" She murmured, her eyes never leaving the cloak of stars that hovered over the atmosphere. She didn't need to see his face at the moment, as simply the sound of his shallow breathing and the tickling sensation of the small hairs on his forearm brushing against her skin was enough to comfort her troubled mind.

"Yes?" He hummed in response, shifting his body so that he could take in the features of her face. Everything about her seemed to embody the definition of perfection; from her curious brown eyes, the delicately sloped shape of her nose to the light pink lips that curved into a complacent smile. Her hair almost blended in with the cold prickly grass under her head - almost like a fairy.

"What would you do, if someone you cared for a lot...just left? Without any warning." She asked, her eyebrows furrowing in contrast to her previous carefree temperament.

Baekhyun swallowed the lump that had grown in his throat and fought to slow his rising heart rate. He reached for her petite hand, entwining his long fingers with her smaller, delicate ones.

"If this is about me, please don't worry, Jihae. We've been together for so long, why would we ever let ourselves be apart?" He pulled her over until she hovered over him, their foreheads lightly brushing.

"You're right, I don't know why I was having those incredulous thoughts." She smiled chastely, playing with his fingers that were still locked between her's.

As she was busy immersing herself in some relieved thoughts, Baekhyun found his eyes watering slightly. His heart ached for her-no, for them- as he knew that he shouldn't be making promises he couldn't keep. Just as a lone tear let itself cascade down his cheek, he pulled her head down to rest on his chest. She comfortably snuggled into him, unaware of the waterfall pouring down his face. He may have felt warm to the touch, but the cold persistent pain that he felt in his chest was overwhelming.

It was unfair for him to lead her on for so long, allowing her to drown in oblivion until the last minute. But by the time she dove back into reality, she would have already been underwater and unable to breath.

However, he already knew that every tree must die at one point, whether it succumbs to the harsh winter season, or splits in half because it's unable to withstand the violent winds of a thunderstorm.

But the catch is that you never know when that tree will finally give out.

And that was Baekhyun thought about that exact moment. Rather than preparing for the tree to collapse, and waiting for the end like a test result, it would be better for them to enjoy their last moments together in bliss and happiness.

That way, even if the tree was a maple, redwood, or even weeping willow, it would be remembered as Evergreen forever in their hearts.

Love how their relationship develops from friends to lovers, and that the oc is flawed like all of us ;-; I dislike the ending omg but it’s beautiful how you symbolize evergreen and trees and relate those images to something divine like love (but I still want baek to be alive asdfghjk)

Chapter 1: Aw, what a lovely story! I thought Baekhyun would end up getting buried under the tree so he could sustain the evergreen forever -- reminded me of Buddhist forest burial traditions, almost! I'm always a er for stories like this, and the symbolism of the tree hits me right in the heart <3 !

Chapter 1: OH GOD THE CARDIAC ARREST HIT ME FROM NOWHERE!
I really like the symbolism you used, the tree to their friendship.
Also i would be be REALLY REALLY sad for the ending but the way you mentioned how 'he's gone physically but they would live on together with this new beginning' really got to me. It shows how meaningful their love was, from bestfriends and separation and all that, they still found each other again.
ALSO I REALLY LIKE YOUR WRITING.
Keep it up!!

Chapter 1: OHMYGODD!!!! I really like the symbolisms, how when they planted the tree it's the first time they meet, and how when they go through fights the plant has to withstand storms :") It just somehow made their love more meaningful;; even though the ending is... well DX But baek has been so stupid hasn't he? Does its just hurt his pride so much that he simply can't apologise for letting such words slip out of his mouth? He's wasted two years of time that he could have spent with jihae :< and to only come to her after two years-- wow, i'm just;; wow. But i really like how you described everything. I laughed at 'like a burnt piece of bacon' and how she thought saying 'i do' is like getting married tho LMAO XD

Chapter 1: This fanfic is wonderfully spectacular! I absolutely love it (even though there's a sad death character). I mainly love how you compare their growing friendship-relationship to a tree. That's a really nice metaphor/simile. Their characters were both so strong and loyal; Baekhyun might have been a jerk, but I'm glad he came to a conclusion as to how he really felt for the OC. This is a beautiful story, Author-nim! Keep up the amazing work. ^^

Chapter 1: My overall assessment: Nice descriptive ability. Good use of figurative speech. Successful in assimilating the evergreen as a point of resemblance to their lives. You definitely disrupted what I was doing with your fic. I was supposed to be editing my own, but once I started reading this, I basically disregarded everything and consumed Evergreen like I was hungry for reading. Although it was fast-paced, it actually fit the growth of the Evergreen really well. You made sure that the scenes in each part would fit each phase of the Evergreen's life. Kudos to you, author-nim! This really broke my heart, too. *shakes head* I'm really not sure what to feel. *sobs FIX MY BROKEN HEART, AUTHOR-NIM!* Maybe I should stick with awe for what you've written.

Chapter 1: Part 1: Aww, that's the cutest thing ever. I can imagine little Baekhyun, Sehun, Luhan, and little JIhae. You make them look so cuddly. And we have a short HunHan moment here. :'( I hope we'll have just a little bit more of this in the parts to come although this is a Baekhyun fic.
Part 2: How can Baekhyun be so smooth? I think the way you make him to be fits him in real life. If it was me, my face would probably blush like a red tomato more than Jihae. And I like how you started it with friendship. In a way, they're too young for the falling madly in love phase.
Part 3: Hey, why the hell did Baekhyun have to be such a jerk? He definitely has mood swings. Either I'm reading on this too much or will this have some sort of function in the following parts? Or maybe he got jealous? Did he misinterpret what he heard? No. This is too fast for me. They need more moments as friends.
Part 4: GAHD! If he likes her why would he think that way about her? Ugh. Baekhyun is so frustrating! AND NOOOOOO! As much as I ship Taeyeon and Baekhyun, you have GOT TO BE KIDDING ME!!!!!! You know what happens when you open yourself to a girl who likes you! Baekhyun, stop this madness!
Part 5: You're such a jerk, Byun Baekhyun! Why would you use Taeyeon like that if you're so in love with Jihae. You're playing with the hearts of two girls. That's not fair. Just because you're a boy doesn't mean you have the right to do this. And just because you had a misunderstanding with Jihae. You should have made more effort instead of being with Taeyeon. I hate you!!!
Wait. wait. wait. But what the heck happened to Baek? What is this?
Part 6 onwards: Ohmygod. Ohmygod. *flips table and then wails* No, really. I'm crying so hard right now while typing this. I'm not going to spoil it for anyone but just that this is really, really saddening. What you just did to me is INJUSTICE! Just kidding. But really. This is injustice.

Chapter 1: Wow man. Seriously. Wow. All those connections and figurative language flowed so well together! I liked the idea of the evergreen tree thing and ... somehow I pity taeyeon more than jinhae or baekhyun. Yes jinhae suffered the death of a loved one, which is in fact a traumatic event, and baekhyun suffered from a sadistic ending caused by heart failure, but taeyeon has been in love for years and having her heart crushed since she was led on and only used, was a really REALLY depressing situation. She chose the right choice though. Breaking up with baekhyun instead of waiting for the day hell look at her instead. I really like your writing! And especially how serene and calm it is.
