FINAL

7 Minutes with HIM

YEJIN’S POV

I sighed as I placed my eyelash curler and mascara back into my make-up box. Walking to the mirror, I smoothed down the fabric of my clothes and examined my reflection. My skin tone had been evened out with a little CC cream and some mattifying powder. My brows were darkened, defined, and the wings of my eyeliner flicked out perfectly.

I chose a black crop top to pair with my high-waisted maroon skirt. A white floral pattern graced the bottom trim and I matched the ensemble with maroon boots that each had a brown heel. A single, silver pendant traced past my neck and collar bones, the treble chain sparkling brilliantly against the dark shirt. Lightly, I tousled my straightened espresso locks and asked myself, “Who am I trying to impress anyway?” I chuckled. Right, I knew exactly who I was hoping to impress.

My phone buzzed from the other end of my bedroom. I jumped at the noise that interrupted Shawn Mendes’s “Handwritten” Deluxe album, and allowed my feet to lightly pad over to the side of my bed so I could read the text.

FROM: Chanyeol

Hey we’ll be there in less than 5 min

FROM: Yejin

    Kk!

I plucked my small cellphone from the outlet and quickly slipped on my large-framed, plastic glasses, careful not to flatten my eyelashes. Then, I grabbed my silver clutch and placed my Sugar Rush perfume, tinted lip balm, and keys, inside. Swinging my white leather jacket over my shoulders, I made my way down the stairs.

“I’m leaving now!” I shouted to my parents. My mom stood up from the living room couch.

“Okay, bye Jinnie! Love you!” she said.

“Love you too!” I replied, turning the doorknob.

“Jinnie, not too late,” my dad called out. “It may be a Friday night, but you still have to pick up your cousin tomorrow.”

“Mhmm.” I heard the boys honk from Chanyeol’s car and smiled after closing the front door.

I went and quickly hopped in.

    “Hey guys!”

“Yo, Yejin!” Chanyeol said. “Let’s hurry, Kai’s expecting us and we don’t want to be too late.”

With that he sped off and down the street.

I reached for my seatbelt and Baekhyun turned around from the passenger seat.

“Hey, Yejin! Damn, you clean up nicely.”

“Thanks.” I blushed lightly and clicked the seat belt over my chest, into place.

It only took about 20 minutes to get to Kai’s house. It was big and hard to miss, what with the colorful pool lights shining from the back and the loud music thumping through the walls and out the windows.

We slammed the car doors shut and Chanyeol locked the vehicle with a ‘beep’. The cool night air greeted us as we ran up to the door. It opened immediately as though Kai had been waiting in the front just for us.

“Baekyeol! Took you guys long enough.”

The three laughed at the stupid ship name and passed along the usual high-fives, handshakes, and fist bumps.

At the sound of my soft chuckle, Kai let his eyes wander up and down my petite figure.

“What’s up, Yejin? You look hot. For once,” he smirked, thick lips pulling up smugly.

I looked up into his eyes, leaned in a little closer, enough to smell his cologne, and then responded into his ear, “I know.” Then I simply pushed past him and let myself in. My friends just laughed from behind and then entered as well.

“Chen!” I called, seeing him leaning over the foosball table with some other guys.

“Ayyy! Look who’s here!” He sauntered over with a goofy grin and enveloped me in a hug.

I patted his back and then pulled away.

“By the way, Amber has been looking for you all night. She’s over by the snack table.”

“Okay, thanks.” I proceeded to skip over to my best friend, and then poked her arm. “Hola!”

“Hey, Yejin!” she smiled, bumping her hip to mine. We both chuckled.

I glanced at the drink in her hand and asked, “Is that….?”

“Nah, no alcohol for me tonight. I’ve learned my lesson.”

“Good,” I commented. I reached for a bottle of root beer and popped a chip in my mouth. “You look nice by the way.”

“Thanks,” Amber replied, adjusting her snapback. “I love your outfit.” She dipped a chip in some cheese. “Hey, guess who got here not too long before you?” She pointed a finger towards the couches and I looked over to see Sehun and Eunji making faces at each other.

He was joking with his friends and had his arm carelessly draped over her shoulder. Eunji wrapped her pretty, pale fingers around the lean limb. Her and Minah, her best friend and practically twin, were giggling to the side about something stupid that he said. I felt something clench in my stomach but I still couldn’t stop staring.

Everyone from our high school’s dance department was here. I’ve been crushing over Sehun since freshman year. I was broken when I found out that he and Eunji had started dating about 10 months ago. It’s not like we really talked much anyway, but secretly, I was hoping he’d notice me someday. And I have honestly nothing against Eunji. I mean, how could I? She’s prettier than me, cooler than me, funnier than me, and performs better than me. We have a few classes together and talk casually. I just can’t help but to envy her sometimes.

I tore my eyes away and pulled Amber with me towards Chanyeol and Baekhyun. We all started talking and began moving our bodies to the music.

Then, I quickly excused myself to the bathroom. I asked Kai where it was.

“Up the stairs, and it’s the 2nd door to the right. Need me to walk you there?” he asked, putting a hand on my shoulder, hot breath a little too close to my ear.

“I’ll find it.” Brushing him off, I padded up the stairs, found the toilet, and shut the door. After doing my business, I washed my hands and stared at the mirror. I reapplied my tinted lip balm and rolled on a bit more perfume with a sigh. Then I made my way back down to the living room.

I saw that a couple guys were moving the coffee table from the middle to the side, and girls were moving off the wall and swishing their hips to the center of the room. One brought an empty Sriracha bottle with her and positioned it on the floor.

    “Hey, Amber, what’s going on?”

“I’m not really sure. I think we’re playing a game or something,” she shrugged. We moved our way over by the couch and watched as everyone gathered into a circle formation, in a guy-girl pattern.

“Yejin, Amber, you guys playing?” Baekhyun called.

    “What game?”

He winked. “7 minutes in heaven.”

I snorted. “I’ll just watch for now.”

    “Yeah, same,” Amber laughed.

    “Suit yourselves.”

“Are you sure, Yejin? There’s always a seat next to me.” Chanyeol motioned towards the space on the floor in between him and Kai. Said devil glanced back at me with expectant eyes.

“I’m fine.” And with that, I averted my gaze downwards, taking another swig of my sugary soda. I swished the bubbles over my tongue as Amber started to describe a new band she was listening to. I then draped my coat over the back of the couch seat.

Rounds and rounds had passed and people stumbled out of the closet with their clothes disheveled, and devilish grins accompanying their flushed cheeks and swollen lips. Their hair was messy and their eyes suggestive. At this point, Amber and I started to engage in the game, but I made no move to lift myself off the cushions and fill the space on the rug. It was Sehun’s turn this time. He hadn’t been chosen once so Eunji gave up her spin for him. Chen and I were cracking inside jokes from across the room until suddenly I realized that all that could be heard was our laughter.

Embarrassed, I coughed and looked back at the Sriracha bottle and realized it had stopped, my laughter stopping with it. Sehun landed on me. The green bottle cap pointed towards the gap left between Chanyeol and Kai, right in front of my feet. Me, of all people.  I saw Eunji tense up and I did too. Curious gazes wandered towards our faces, as though trying to guess what would happen.

Clearing my throat, I quickly stuttered out, “O-oh, um… I’m not really playing.” Disappointed groans immediately sounded and I rambled on. “You can just spin again, it’s no big deal.”

I felt Amber push me forward. Incredulous, I dug my heels into the carpet. But she kept pushing and hurriedly whispered, “Oh, come on, this is your chance to have fun. Now go!” in my ear. Sehun quietly entered the closet and I was pushed in after him. The last thing I heard was, “Betta get ‘em tiger!”, most likely from Baekhyun, and I didn’t even want to know which one of the two of us he was directing that towards. I would’ve nearly tripped and crashed on my face had it not been for Sehun’s quick reflexes catching me before I fell.

Kai slammed the door shut, shouting, “You have 7 minutes!” and we awkwardly pulled apart.

It was silent for a moment. But I forced myself to gather up some of my courage.

“Okay… Listen,” I started. “We barely talk and you have a girlfriend. I’m cool if you just wanted to sit in here the whole time. We can just-“

He cut me off. “No, no, that wouldn’t be fun for either of us. After all, this is just a game, right?”

I exhaled, feeling my nerves tremble down to the back of my thighs, what with being so close to him and all.

“Are you sure?” I asked. My voice was meek as I peered up at him.

    He nodded wordlessly.

We each took a step forward.

Thinking to myself that this should be as quick and painless as possible, I stood on my tiptoes and timidly closed the gap between our lips.

It seemed that, briefly, time was frozen. We were still. Worried I disgusted him, I was about to pull away, but then he leaned into the kiss, tilting his head and closing his eyes. I barely had time to gasp before our lips connected once more, gently massaging against one another as though something had just sparked within us.

Sehun tasted of chocolate and mint. Gaining confidence, I nibbled on his bottom lip, my way of asking for an entrance.

He willingly obliged, allowing my tongue to swipe over his. He made a soft noise of satisfaction in the back of his throat, and I shivered as his husky scent wafted into my nose.

I tangled my coffee-lacquered fingertips into his dirty blonde hair, my other palm resting on the nape of his neck. His hands were cupping my face, and we only broke apart to catch our breaths.

It felt so unreal as our hearts beat, pulsed, no – throbbed – in time together. My eyelids fluttered when I felt my back being pressed against the hard closet wall.

Our lips continued to dance passionately together, teeth clashing, and veins pumping with adrenaline and hormone-laced excitement. The tips of our noses bumped whenever we angled our faces in a different direction, getting lost in each other’s energy. We were desperate to hold each other closer.

To my surprise, his cool, calloused finger pads began to trace the soft skin left exposed by my dark crop top. Every inch he touched and explored set my nerves on fire. They teasingly began to climb up my rib cage, but then we suddenly heard a knock on the door.

    “Time’s up.”

With a jolt, we broke apart, and stared into each other’s eyes, shocked that that kiss, or those kisses, rather, were so exhilarating. He moved his hands to lay palm-flat against the wall, each one beside my head. His fringe was messy and sweat clung to his forehead in tiny beads.

I began to smooth out my hair and clothes as I carefully moved back in front of the closet door. But when I turned around, I noticed some of my gloss remaining on Sehun’s pink lips. Not like it was the first time I surprised him (and myself) that night, I gently used my thumb to wipe it off, and then swung the door wide open. He never took his eyes off of me as I did so. I then shuffled my way back towards Amber.

I had no idea if Sehun and I looked as disoriented as we felt, and everyone else’s expressions were too ambiguous to read. He sat down next to Eunji but didn’t replace his arm over her shoulder, back to where it was before.

With a cough, Chanyeol awkwardly asked, “So... Whose turn is it next?”

The game continued on for a bit longer, and after a while everyone began to get tired. The living room was trashed, blue SOLO cups and wrappers littering the floor. It was nearing midnight, and I told Chanyeol and Baekhyun that my parents were expecting me to be home soon. I waved Chen goodbye, and when Amber came up to me and hugged me, she softly mouthed, “You better tell me everything when we get back to school,” and grinned with a knowing glint in her eyes. I blushed at the thought and hurriedly threw on my jacket, as though trying to bury myself in the white leather.

“Bye, Yejin,” some of my other school friends laughed.

    “Baiii,” I called out cutely.

I walked out with the boys towards the car. They stopped to talk to Kai for a bit, so I stood by the steps and wrapped my hands against my sides, a pathetic attempt to feel warmth. Checking my phone for the time, I started humming to myself. Boisterous laughter and sarcastic jokes graced my ears and I looked up to see Sehun and his friends approaching. Eunji and Minah were right in front of him, and I ducked down my head before the former’s eyes could meet mine and laser them out my sockets with heated disgust.

They pushed on, their guy friends behind them as they stumbled out towards the poorly lit streets. They cackled and I cringed as the smell of cheap alcohol wafted off their breaths. But then, I smelled an all too familiar combination of chocolate and mint.

I couldn’t help but to peer up, and jolted slightly when I met Sehun’s eyes.

“Hey Yejin,” he offered a crooked smile. It was an unfamiliar sight to me, and I didn’t know how to read it. “About what just hap-”

I interrupted him. “Yeah, I know, I’ll forget it. Let’s just not talk again, okay? Wouldn’t want Eunji to get any weird ideas. Night, Sehun.” With a burst of determination, I pushed my feet off the steps and took large strides until I got to Chanyeol’s car, hoping to throw myself into the leather seat. “Damn it, Chanyeol, unlock the door already!”

He and Baekhyun turned their heads and giggled, letting out an apology, and then they high-fived Kai a goodbye.

“Chill Jinnie, we’re coming. You cold or something? Your face is all pink,” Baekhyun said.

I slammed my forehead against the vehicle window in embarrassment.

Chanyeol patted my lower back, as though to comfort me, and pressed a button on his keys to unlock the car.

Immediately, I opened the door, tossed in my jacket and clutch, and plopped inside. After my friends got in and we all buckled our seat belts, I rolled down the window. Sehun was getting in his car, too. Eunji was mindlessly waiting in the passenger seat. He saw me staring, and opened his mouth like he was about to say something. Then I heard the car engine purr and sputter to life once Chan put his keys in ignition. We began to move farther away from Kai’s house and the last thing I saw was Sehun swish his arm frustratedly and slam his door shut.

I wasn’t sure why, and I wasn’t sure why I cared so much that he looked upset. With much reluctance, I turned to face the seat in front of me, and closed my eyes to let the wind wash away my worries. The streets were vibrant with sound, and I counted the miles until I would be at home again.

SEHUN’S POV

I checked my watch as Eunji kissed me on the cheek.

    “Oppa!” I heard her say.

    “Oh, huh, what?”
“Good night,” she chuckled, amused by my lack of attention. She teased, “Dream of only me tonight, okay, babe?”

    “Night,”

And with a nod from me, she opened the passenger door and skipped to the front entrance of her house. She pulled out her key, waved me goodbye, and then disappeared into her dark living room.

I put the car in drive, and sped off homebound. It took always tooka  while to send Eunji back because she lived in a different district than I did, so it was already past midnight. Good thing it’ll be the weekend, so my parents wouldn’t mind.

I thought back to Kai’s party and what happened. My mind drifted back to the game. I couldn’t forget Yejin’s face when the bottle landed on her. She always seemed pretty chill so I wasn’t sure what shook her so much. It’s weird how little I know about her. She’s in a couple of my dance classes, and I’ve seen her in electives and math. We’ve only exchanged a few words before tonight. I know she’s smart, and she shows a lot of potential in her dance skills. But even though we barely talk, it seems like she’s always pretty quiet, like she puts up walls around her. Yejin’s actually kind of cute up close, and I’m curious what her friends had to do for her to be so comfortable around them. Wait- do I want to get closer to her? I barely know her!

Her voice echoed, “..I know, I’ll forget it. Let’s just not talk again, okay?”

I shook my head and focused on the road.

Before I knew it, I was pulling into my driveway, the car headlights illuminating the garage door and front steps of my large  house. I grabbed my keys and stepped out, jogging lightly to go unlock the mahogany door.

“I’m home,” I said going straight up to my room. Tiredly, my mom shuffled out of her bedroom and ruffled her hair.

“Hi sweetie. Did you have a good time?”

I yawned and kissed her forehead. “Yeah I’m just exhausted. Where’s Dad?”

“Oh he’s on a business trip, remember?”

    “Right.”

“Well get a good sleep, then.”

    “You too, Mom.”

I entered my room and tossed my keys onto my night stand, beside my phone charger. I let out another yawn as I threw my shirt over my shoulders. With much laziness, I went into my bathroom to wash my face and brush my teeth. Then I lifted my blanket and settled into bed, staring at the old glow in the dark stars that were scattered across the ceiling. I closed my eyes, and memories of Yejin floated into my unwitting head once more.

    Her lips that surprised mine

Her hot, little tongue in my mouth

Her hands tangled through my hair

My hands on her soft face

My heart louder than a bass drum

My fingers brushing against her stomach

How I felt when she reached out to wipe my lips

My eyelids ripped open in shock and I exhaled heavily. I shook my head, slamming it back onto the pillow, and tried to think of Eunji, hoping it was her face that would invade my dreams.

“You have a girlfriend, Sehun,” I whispered to myself. I opened my window and closed my eyes to let the breeze brush away my frustration. The house was bereft of sound, and I counted the minutes until the sun would rise again.
