Our City Uncovered
Description
After the release of an industrialized drug that promised immortality and would hopefully serve as a cure for illness and disease wipes out the human population, what is left of humanity has been evacuated to an underground city known as the Cover.
The drug, as advertised by the name of ‘Eufloria’, promised a decline to deteriorating health and would help those with cancerous cells fight against it. The human race was supposedly going to flourish and become more advanced than they had ever been. Instead, the drug proved to do the opposite and a widespread epidemic came along with it.
The Typics were the humans that did not survive the drug. Symptoms of the drug included internal bleeding, failure of internal organs, swollen eyes that slowly turned them blind, collapsed lungs, paralysis, peeling skin, and ultimately death.
Then there were the Erratics who became the mutated creatures of the Surface. They once were humans with cancerous cells but were now stuck between the stage of life and death because of the drug that fused with their cancerous cells.
In a blind attempt to eliminate these creatures, the countries of the world resorted to nuclear weaponry. Country after country began to crumble and the government could do nothing but watch the world burn. Soon, the only living thing to walk across the land was the Erratics.
The Forerunner, one of the few survivors, began to rebuild the humanity that was lost underground. People escaped to their new sanctuary and soon, things stabilized. People forgot about the danger above and began their new lives in the Cover.
Foreword
There, the people live in harmony with one another under the leadership of the Forerunner. The Cover is all that they have known and the idea that the Surface is a toxic environment has been re enforced and conditioned into their minds.
At birth, the infants go through a surgical procedure in which a chip is inserted into the back of their neck. With the chip, the Forerunner, also known as their leader, is able to monitor these children as they grow up. Through the monitoring, he will be able to determine whether these children will grow up to become a fighter or a worker.
At the age of six, all the children are summoned to the Culling. The Culling is an initiation ceremony where the children are told what their future holds for them. Either they become an Ordinarian and help sustain the Cover or they become the Selected and transfer to the Innermost to begin their training.
The Ordinarians are in charge of the monotonous tasks that help keep the Cover running and are otherwise known as the working class. They are the doctors, the teachers, the farmers, the builders, the students.
The Selected are in charge of scavenging the Surface for supplies and resources. They are the symbol of hope for the Ordinarians. Their purpose is to train and fight with their assigned teams.
BTS, otherwise known as the Bulletproof Boy Scouts, is the mercenary group amongst the Selected. They are given the toughest missions that the other teams would cower away from. They know no fear and are loyal to their people. They have a near perfect success rate for their missions.
During one mission many years ago, they came across more Erratics than they were prepared for and amidst the fight, their eighth member had fallen. They had no choice but to leave her behind as they returned back to the Cover.
News of the fallen soldier spread through the Innermost and eventually to the Cover itself. Her death was honoured to the fullest and to this day, the people still keep her in their prayers.
Years have passed and their daily runs to the Surface have become nothing but tedious and mundane. In the course of one particular search-and-rescue mission, they discover a base that they had never seen before.
What they did not expect was that this one mission might cause them to question everything they had ever come to know.

author's note ✍
First off, I hope the description and foreword has piqued your interest enough for you to get all the way down here. If so, welcome!
There were so many inspirations for this story. My friend and I have been wanting to start a proper story together, one that we will stay motivated to finish, for so many years. The last year of high school seemed to kickstart this idea for us. As we are both in University now, the updates may come slower depending on our work load, so please keep that in mind.
Novel inspirations: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley, 1984 by George Orwell, and Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood.
Video game inspirations: Borderlands, Fallout, Halo, We Happy Few, and Bioshock.
If anyone is wondering, the dictatorship comes from the novel inspirations and the general gist of the Cover, the Surface and etc, come from the video games! (I totally recommend reading/playing any of the titles above)
Do I have other stories to worry about? Yes, I do have many other ongoing stories. Am I crazy for starting another story? Probably. Oh well.
We'll do our best to reply to every comment and try not to add in any spoilers. If at any point you want to subscribe or upvote, thank you in advance for the support.
I hope you enjoy this story as much as we will have writing it and as always, happy reading!
For those who enjoy listening to music while they read, I've compiled a playlist of soundtracks that I found fitting for a story. Also, none of the music within this playlist have lyrics so don't worry about it distracting you.
