Princess in Muddy School Uniform Part 1

I Don't Like Her... Seriously

It was so awkward sitting here. I could feel her body heat. I had to
admit it was warm though. At some point, we had inched even closer, and
now the blazer and jacket were covering both of us.

My heart beat like a drum and I struggled to swallow my saliva
naturally. "That wouldn't be your heart I hear right now, right?" Momo
asked. Despite it being pitch black inside the shed, I could just tell
she was smirking like no tomorrow.

"No," I quickly denied.

"I'm starting to think I make you nervous."

"Pfft...No."

"Have you got an answer for me yet?"

"An answer for what?"

"What exactly do you think of me, nerd-bird?" It was like deja vu all
over again.

The shed door creaked and flung open, a gust of wind hitting me. A
skinny yet strong frame stood in the doorway. I quickly realised who it
was and jumped up, grabbing my blazer and bolting as though my life
depended on it. Momo laughed, seeing my slight dilemma and panic at
the question and slowly got up, following me out.

"Thanks Nayeon, late as usual," Momo joked, punching her friend in the
arm. We looked around the school ground; it sure did look different when
it was all dark. In fact, it looked rather eery.

"How'd you get in?" I asked, paranoid, silently hoping her answer wasn't
what I was thinking.

"I climbed the fence."

"Oh no." First of all, that was called trespassing, secondly, I couldn't
climb the fence to save my life.

"What?" Momo asked.

"I can't climb the fence."

"I'll help you."

How did I go from being an A grade student to a fence-climbing
delinquent in such a short amount of time? I gave her a 'really' look
and she looked back, tilting her head. "It's either this or you sleep
here," she pointed out.

"Good point. But seriously, how do I get over?" I asked. Was I supposed
to power jump over? Cling onto the skinny bars and hope my feet were so
big they would semi-wedge between the spaces in the bars?

"I'll boost you over, and then you pull yourself over with your arms,"
she instructed rather vaguely. This seemed rather unrealistic because
well...that fence was pretty damn high. "You're lucky it doesn't have
spikes on it."

"Right. Okay. So...how do you boost me exactly?"

She rolled her eyes and walked closer to the fence, with her hands
together, fingers intertwined. I had watched enough movies to know that
I had to step on her hands.

Well...this was awkward. Partly because I wasn't exactly light, but
partly because it was possible my bum would end up in front of her face.
I needed to get this quickly over with.

"Ready?" she asked as I'd successfully managed to maintain my balance. I
nodded and she pushed upwards. I clung onto the top rung of the gate and
just basically hung there with my legs flailing around desperately. So
this is why people are supposed to exercise. After puffing for a while,
I pulled myself half over and made the dire mistake of looking down.

"Oh gosh. It's high," I said, starting to tremble a little. Momo and
Nayeon got themselves quickly over in about a quarter of the time it had
taken me to pull my body over the other side. "You must do this
often..." I murmured. I jumped down and the force sent a shock straight
through my foot. The pain hurt. Really bad.

I quickly crouched own to look at my ankle where a current throbbing
pain was starting up. "Hey, are you okay?" Momo asked, nudging me with
her foot.

"Uh...yeah," I lied. I stood up, only to hiss out in pain as soon as I
did so. She turned and crouched down in front of me. "Uh..."

"Hop on," she said, turning her head around to look at me. "Quickly," she
said, gesturing to her back with her head in this really weird way that
was kind of a flick, but also kind of like a turn.

"I'll be fine," I insisted.

"If you don't get on..." she paused to think of a threat. "I'll carry
you...in my arms," she grinned proudly.

"Oh have mercy." I hobbled the few steps forward and hopped on rather
awkwardly.

I could feel the heat from her body ebbing out. We were now both back in
our appropriate jackets and were somewhat warmer than before. Thump.
Thump. Thump.

Was that...my heart?

'Of course it's your heart. Duh. The circulatory system is responsible
for pumping blood around your body, supplying oxygen to your vital
organs so you can live. So of course you're heart is beating. It's only
beating extra hard because you just exerted yourself in exercise.'
Now
it all made sense when I thought about it logically.

"What the heck was that?" Momo asked, turning her head to look at me.

"What the heck was what?" I replied.

"Don't worry."

Her body was so...well...warm. "Where's your house?" she asked all of a
sudden.

"Uh...." I was rather hesitant to tell her where I lived, in fear that
she'd stalk me forever.

"Unless you want to walk home," she added.

That's when I remembered it. My parents had left to visit a sick friend
and were staying the night. I had my keys in my bag.

My bag was in my locker.

We weren't at school anymore.

Oh damn.

"What?" Nayeon asked, obviously noting the shock that was on my face.

"Well...you see...I left my keys in my bag which is bag inside my locker
at school," I began explaining.

"Then knock on the door. It might be eleven but I'm sure your parents
will answer," Momo suggested, forgetting that I had a brain.

"Obviously, if my parents were home, they would realise that something
was seriously wrong that their daughter was not home by about six
o'clock. Therefore, we would have been found at around that time because
my frantic parents would have called the school." I paused to take a breath.
"Unfortunately, they're visiting a sick friend and staying the night, so
no matter how much I knock, the door won't magically open."

"Well, isn't this a problem..." Momo said aloud.

Oh crap. Where the hell was I supposed to sleep? It was winter, and if
it were summer, I would sleep outside in between the fence and wall of
the house, but sadly, it was cold, and I would probably die.

"I would let you sleep at my house, but my parents draw the line at
having girls and boys over," Momo murmured.

"Wasn't going to ask," I replied.

"Nayeon?" Momo asked.
"No," she replied quickly.

"Give me a second." Momo put me gently down on the ground and dragged
Nayeon about ten metres away. After a series of hushed whispers, hand
gestures and throwing up of arms exasperatedly, they came back.

"Okay, if you have absolutely nowhere to go, you can stay at my house,"
Nayeon scowled. Momo smiled at her in that insincere, threatening way.

"So what's it going to be nerd-bird?" Momo asked.

Why world!? Why!? Why memory!? Why!?

"My parents are home, and if you want, I'll sleep in my bathroom," Nayeon
added.

"Bathroom?" I said aloud, raising an eyebrow.

"Well, I can't sleep in the lounge room for various reasons."

"Uh...okay then."

"You decided yet?" Momo asked again.

"I think....I'm going to have to stay at Nayeon's house." Oh the pain. It
was like an arrow had gone straight through my pride, piercing it and
leaving a huge gaping hole in its place.

This was embarrassing, and they'd probably never let me forget it.

We all parted ways at the roundabout, with Momo whispering a bunch of
threats to Nayeon. I managed to make out the words, "Do anything and I'll
kill you."

"I'll make sure I do," Nayeon had smirked in reply, putting an arm around
my shoulder. I stiffened until she took her arm away. She continued
walking ahead, laughing to herself.

"You gonna pick up the pace or has studying so much atrophied your
muscles?" she asked, looking back.

"I'm not that unfit!" I exclaimed.

"Puff, puff, puff," she said, impersonating me pulling myself over the
fence. I scowled.

"Well, this is my humble castle," she said, gesturing to the house in
front of us. Surprisingly, it was even more average looking than
Momo's house. It had the usual door, garage, bricks and grass. I made
my way to the door, but she quickly grabbed my arm and pulled me back.

"What?" I asked.

"We're sneaking in."

“What!?” I exclaimed.

“Shut up, stop shouting,” she hissed.

“This is your house…right?” I asked, suddenly remembering the kind of
people these girls were. Why the hell was I even willing to stay at ‘her’
house!?

“Yes…but I’m fairly certain my parents wouldn’t be too psyched that I
had actually left my bedroom at around ten thirty and dragged a random
girl home.”

“Right.” I paused and thought about it for a second. “You snuck out!?”

“Would your parents let you leave at ten thirty if you realised a mate
of yours wasn’t home yet and was most likely still trapped inside a shed
at school?”

“You’re right. They wouldn’t.”

“Okay, now follow me.”

We treaded softly around the side of the house. She unlatched the gate
leading to her backyard and pushed it open gently. It creaked softly,
but no one seemed to notice. I latched it again as I passed through. The
backyard was also a very normal backyard. It seemed awfully
backyard-like. It had grass, a pavement path around the edge, a clothes
line, a shed and pot plants here and there.

“This is it,” she said, pointing to a window about a metre and a half up
the wall.

“I’m going to guess this involves more climbing,” I whispered.

She nodded and pushed open the window. Man, there were some serious
advantages to being tall; she pushed the window up so effortlessly. She
looked at me as I hesitated, staring strangely at the window.

“I’ll boost you up,” she sighed. She put her hands together and I put my
foot into it. She gave a strong push and I pulled myself through the
window, slightly paranoid that I would get trapped.

Then again, if she managed to get in and out, I would be able to as well.
There was a loud thud as I landed on the ground. The hell? Isn’t there
usually a bed just under the window to soften the fall?

“Be quiet!” she exclaimed.

“Sorry,” I whispered. She shut the window again. I quickly looked around
the room, just to make sure there wasn’t anything weird that would scar
me for life if I saw it.

“Well, I’m going to shower, so just sit around and do whatever it is you
want to do. If you hear footsteps coming, hide underneath the bed. I
looked at the small gap below her bed, and although I doubted I would be
able to slide swiftly under, I nodded anyway.

She headed into the bathroom with a bundle of clothes and I walked around
her room, casually looking through her bookshelf and various piles of
papers. On the edge of what I assumed was her study table was a photo
frame. There was a little boy with black hair holding a baby that looked
like a girl.

That’s right, I totally forgot, but Nayeon used to be little too. How
strange. A sister? She had a baby sister? Last time, Momo had told me
that Nayeon was an only child. Was the girl a cousin then? Just as I was
about to pick up the frame to examine further, Nayeon flipped the photo
frame face down. I looked back to see her looking a little bit…well,
pissed.

“Sorry,” I quickly apologised.

“Try to keep your curiosity to yourself, yeah?” she said, grinning.
Within a few seconds, her mood had changed one hundred and eighty
degrees, and somehow, it was as though that grin was not genuine. There
had been something else in her eyes when I looked back at her. Pain.

I heard the water run in the shower and remained standing in her room
with no exact idea of what to do. Despite being indoors, I could still
feel the chill.

“Just shut up Sunmi!” came the booming male voice. In fear that someone
was approaching, I threw myself underneath the bed, accidentally bumping
my head against the bed frame. I bit my lip to stop myself from
whimpering in pain.

“Jonghan! Nayeon needs to go to school!” the woman I assumed was Sunmi shouted.

“You’re always arguing with me! I’m the head of the household!” he yelled.

“Argh, God Jonghan!”

A door slammed and the house went quiet again. This is what Nayeon went
through on a daily basis? My heart felt as though it were being pricked.
A door opened and I held my breath, afraid to breathe out in case I made
a noise.

“Mina?” Nayeon whispered. From underneath the bed, I could see her feet
moving across the floor. “Hey! Where are you?”

“Here!” I quickly hissed, rolling out, yet again bumping my head.

She looked at me weirdly and then chuckled to herself as I rubbed my head
in pain. Her eyes squinted up as she grinned with a hand out in front of
. I screwed up my face weirdly yet again and she continued
laughing (not out loud of course because that would just be weird).

“Okay then…” I said slowly when she had finally finished laughing.

“That’s hilarious. You actually slid underneath the bed?”

“You said to in case someone came.”

“I was kidding. I didn’t think you’d actually fit.”

I looked at her weirdly. “I didn’t mean that you were fat – cause you’re
not – oh you know what? Don’t worry,” she sighed.

I laughed.

"I'm going to do some work, so just sit around or whatever. If you wanna
go to sleep, I'll get you a towel and you can lay it over my pillow, or
if you're not scared of cooties, just sleep on my pillow." She pulled out
the chair from the desk and sat down taking out book from the shelf.

On the corner of her desk, was a small rectangular box like thing. She
flipped it open and put on....glasses. She wore glasses? She 'used' her
study desk? She opened her chemistry textbook and started scribbling down
answers to the questions without hesitation.

"You study!?" I accidentally exclaimed out loud. She turned back at me
and laughed. Her glasses were rectangular black framed glasses and the
thing is, she actually looked smarter with glasses on, but still not weird.

"Since you're going to be staying here, as payment, you can help me
whenever I get stuck," she said. "How does that sound?"

"Okay," I agreed.

I sat down on her bed cross legged, leaning against the wall. She
actually studied. Amazing. Man, I was learning so many new things and I
wasn't even in school. Oh damn, I had track and field training tomorrow.
It was all Sana's fault for dragging me to run with her; now I had to train.

For starters, I didn't have my uniform, and well, I was not exactly keen
to be walking by myself to school at six in the morning when it was
still dark. Training started at six thirty, but you had to get there early.

"Oi, come help me with this one," Nayeon said, turning to look at me. I
couldn't help but semi grin or laugh whenever I saw her with glasses on.

"Me wearing glasses is not that funny," she said.

"I'm fairly certain no one has ever seen you wear glasses,"

"Well that's because I only need them when it's darker and I'm actually
trying to read."

"How come you could do the others and not this one?" I asked, resisting
the urge to point at her and laugh.

"Well, they're different," she said slowly, probably sensing that I was
finding this rather amusing.

"Just balance everything else first, leave the hydrogens and oxygens
until last."

"Uh huh. I tried that. It didn't work."

"Give it here," I said, leaving my hands out so she could pass me the book.

"Here," she replied, giving me the book. Well, what the hell was I
supposed to write with? My eyeballs?

"Pencil," I said, holding the book with one hand while putting the other
out so she could give me the pencil. She finally gave me the pencil after
some reluctance. I quickly scribbled down the answer while she watched,
and gave it back to her.

She studied my writing for a while and finally after five minutes looked
up. "This is wrong," she said blatantly.

"I swear it's right," I said slowly. "Check it again."

Three minutes later, she answered, "It's definitely wrong."

"Give it here." I took the book and double checked, counting up the
number of each element on each side.

Oh damn, I was wrong. I had an extra hydrogen. I wasn't going to admit I
was wrong. "You know, you're wrong," Nayeon kindly reminded. I grinned
sheepishly and put the book down on the table.

She smiled a smile filled with complete and utter satisfaction that she
had proved me wrong. Punk.

"Okay, how about we draw up the 'T' table and write down the number of
each element," I suggested, trying to recover from that rather
embarrassing moment.

"Okay then, smarty pants," she agreed childishly, definitely purposely
trying to rub in the fact that I had been wrong.

"You work it out and write it down."

"Okay ma'am."

"Stop with the name calling," I scowled.

"Yes sir," she said, looking back and smirking at me. I glared and she
laughed before writing down the numbers.

"No you idiot!" I exclaimed, quickly cupping my hands over my mouth
after, realising that Nayeon's parents didn't exactly know I was here.

"Pea-brain," she teased.

The on and off argument had continued for the rest of the night and in
the end, we had solved the question. It hadn't actually been difficult,
and looking back, it was quite concerning that I couldn't get the
answer. By the time we turned off the lights and headed to sleep, it was
eleven o'clock.
