Emi Haro POV
I was in my office, writing my weekly, long, and detailed e-mail to Leo. Leo is the President of Travelfy; he lives in San Francisco where the HQ of Travelfy is located. He comes to South Korea every trimester with other executives to show me the company’s results for that period.
“Sajangnim! Again with a white shirt, jeans, and loafers?” Ari exclaimed, annoyed.
“Uhh.” I said without taking my eyes off my laptop.
“Why?” She asked with a sad tone.
“I read an article on how Mark Zuckerberg and Steves Jobs wore the same t-shirt, sweater, and jeans everyday. Do you know why?”
“Because they didn’t have fashion sense?” Ari replied smiling.
I smirked. “In the wise words of Mark Zuckerberg: I'm in this really lucky position, where I get to wake up every day and help serve more than a billion people. And I feel like I'm not doing my job if I spend any of my energy on things that are silly or frivolous about my life.” I said as I raised my head to look at her reaction.
“What does that mean?” Ari asked, confused.
“It means that I have to make a lot of decisions on a daily basis. And I don’t want to saturate myself with silly decisions about what shirt or dress or skirt to wear… everyday… That’s why I bought a dozen of the same white shirt and jeans.” I said with a smile and I continued writing my e-mail.
She sighed. “Sajangnim, your appointment with Dr. Ji is in 30 minutes. You need to get going.”
“Yep, I’m… just… sending the e-mail... Finished.” I exclaimed. I stood up, turned off my laptop and grabbed my purse. “Can you tell the valet to…”
Ari interrupted me. “Your car is already in the lobby.” She proudly said.
“Thank You!” I said while leaving my office.
“You worked hard Sajangnim.” Ari bowed.
I was 15 minutes late to my appointment. I ran to GaHee’s office. I knew she would be mad.
“Unnie!! I’m sorry! I’m sorry! It’s a nightmare to find a parking space in this hospital.” I exclaimed as I entered her office.
“Emiah!! You’re late!!” She shouted as she crossed her arms.
“That’s why I said I’m sorry.”
“Araso. I’ll have to do this in record time. Go get undressed so I can make the abdominal ultrasound.”
GaHee besides being my best friend is also my gynecologist. I met her at UC Bekerly; she was studying her specialty and I was studying my MBA. We’ve been best friends since then.
I took my clothes off, put a robe on, and lay down on the stretcher. GaHee entered and did the ultrasound.
After the ultrasound I dressed and sat down on the opposite side of her desk to hear her conclusions.
“Everything looks the same. Your right ovary looks healthy. The dermoid cyst in your left ovary is still the same size. Are you taking your pills everyday?” She asked as she looked at the printed ultrasound images.
“Yep. Everyday.” I said.
I suffer from a medical condition called: polycystic ovaries. A year ago when I moved to South korea, GaHee found a tumor on my left ovary. After further examination it was determined that it's a dermoid cyst and it’s not harmful. She told me to get monthly examinations to see how the cyst develops. She has made it clear that someday the cyst needs to be surgically removed. Especially if I want to get pregnant, my chances of getting pregnant with this condition are lower than 5%. I also can’t take birth control pills, due to the hormones. Hormonal changes can make my cyst grow exponentially, which would result in a surgery and having to stop working for a whole month. So, that’s why I follow Ga-Hee’s instructions exactly.
“I would prefer to do a transl ultrasound, since it would give me a better view of your condition. But, since you haven’t been deflowered.” She said with a mocking tone still looking at the ultrasound pictures.
“Here it comes again! Unnie, you tell me this every time I’m here!” I said, annoyed.
“Get deflower then. It would make my job easier and your life happier. Besides, you’re 23. You’re of age now.” She said as she placed her elbows on the desk and intertwined her fingers.
I sighed. “Let me be…Please!” I begged.
She smiled. “You’ve only dated once, centuries ago… at least you’re going to dates now. What happened with Mr. Lee Sajangnim?” She asked while playing with a pen.
“Nothing really. But, I haven’t told you… I met G-Dragon.” I shyly said.
She looked at me with her eyes wide-opened. “You’re kidding, right?”
I shook my head.
“What? When? Why haven’t you told me?” She shouted.
“Unnie!! I run two companies, in case you forgot. And do you know to how many events I went last month? I’m thinking of firing my PR team for making me go out that much!” I exclaimed as I leaned on the chair.
“I know! I got tired of seeing your face in magazines and newspapers.”
“Anyways, time is up… your next patient must be waiting for you. Let’s have dinner this week, so I can tell you everything.” I said as I stood up.
“Hah! You must be kidding.” She said. She grabbed the phone and dialed.
“Hi, can you tell the next patient I just had an emergency? Please reschedule the appointment… Uhh... Yes… Thank you.” She hung up and looked at me. “Sit please, and you better tell every detail.” She said as she took out a bag of chips from a drawer.
“And that’s it. Before you ask me how I fell asleep in someone else apartment… that day I woke up at 3:00 AM due to a meeting I had with the San Francisco Office.” I said. GaHee was looking at me like she was watching a movie.
“Why did you return for G-dragon when you noticed the paparazzis? I mean you’re not even a Big Bang fan.” She asked.
“I would lie if I tell you I know the answer to that. But, I just had heard how his girlfriend broke up with him. He was drunk. And to me, he was at his most vulnerable state. I just couldn’t leave him there, like that. Believe me, I try to not get involved.” I answered.
GaHee looked at me suspiciously. “Why did you look at him when he was so close to you? I just can’t imagine you doing something like that.”
“Unnie! When I decided to help him, I tried to be the most annoying and disrespectful person. I didn’t want him to ask me questions. Or for him to think he owed me something. But he was so cocky! Man, he was more annoying than I was! I didn’t want to let him know I was shaking when he leaned towards me. I just wanted to show him I also had control. Although, to be completely honest, my heart was beating so fast.” I replied as I stood up from the chair and walked towards the window. Just remembering that moment, made my heart race again.
GaHee seemed very confused, for her to hear how I acted that night was so out of my character.
“I can understand why you didn’t say anything when he leaned on your shoulder. It was obviously the right thing to do. That’s something the Emi I know would do. But all the things before that… I just can’t imagine you behaving that way.” GaHee said. She turned her chair to look at my back.
“I know you sometimes can be a little bit naïve. But I’m sure you know what looking at him as he was leaving the charity event meant.” She continued.
I sighed. “Sadly, I do. He must think I’m dying of love for him. Unnie, but you didn’t watch that smile. It was like a poster had come to life.” I exclaimed as I turned to look at her.
She stood up in front of me. “Look me in the eyes and answer this… you DO like him? Right?”
“Unnie, you know I’m more an ELF than a VIP. But I must say that now I do understand why he is so famous and loved by many.”
She walked to her desk. “A simple no would’ve been enough.” She said.
“Have you seen him after that day?” She asked.
“Nope. It’s been… maybe a month since then. I don’t think I’ll see him again.” I said as I walked to the chair where I was sitting. I grabbed my purse, so I could leave.
GaHee suddenly jumped. “Emiah, I think Kim Soo Hyun was at that charity event too!! Didn’t you meet him?”
“Unnie!! He was in the Blue House too! But I wasn’t able to meet him. When Ari told me he was in the Blue House, he was just leaving; I just saw his back. In the other event I didn’t see him.” I said with regret.
“Do you remember how we use to fight over him when “The Moon Embracing The Sun” was airing?” She said.
I laughed so hard as I remembered those days.
“Emiah, if you ever meet him. Please get an autograph for me. Yes?” She begged.
“Of course.” I replied. “Unnie, I’m leaving.” I said while walking towards the door.
As I was exiting the office, GaHee shouted: “And G-Dragon’s autograph too! Cause I’m sure as hell you’ll see him again.”
