Don't You Remember? (JJProject AU)

Description

Childhood friends. A pinky promise. The time that wedged them apart.

Now: practically strangers, one-sided love, and the promises that were broken over time.

(This is my first AFF story, I'm sorry if there are any errors!)

Foreword

Jinyoung honestly didn't know what hit him.

He thought that today would be a normal day- he'd get to class, he'd learn things, he'd eat, and then he'd go home. Along with that he'd sneak a glance or two at JB.

JB. The infamous JB. Popular, the dominant one, the all-powerful.

Not to mention completely out of Jinyoung's league.

Jinyoung sighed and looked in the mirror in the bathroom. He poked his cheek. JB would never befriend someone as...squishy... as he was. He wasn't masculine enough for him. Jinyoung tried flexing in the mirror, but there was pretty much nothing there. He pouted in the mirror, heaved a final sigh, and picked up his books before heading out the door. Alone.

Jinyoung had gotten used to being alone. He was used to the empty air next to him as he walked home, walked through school, and went through life. Sure, friends have come and gone, but no one truly stuck by him his whole life. And that's why Jinyoung was so focused on JB.

JB used to be his childhood buddy. In preschool they were the best of friends. They shared food, played with each other, and were inseparable. They were perfect for each other. Or...that's what Jinyoung thought.

But they grew further apart over time. And it broke Jinyoung's heart. They say that time heals, but in reality time wounds in Junior's case. As the days and years went by, they were wedged further and further apart. And what hurt to Jinyoung the most was the fact that JB seemed to completely forget about him. Whenever Jinyoung happened to cross paths with him, JB wouldn't even bat an eyelash.

You can't just do that to a person, Jinyoung silently raged, turning the corner to leave the campus. You left me, but I still love you.

Deep in thought, Jinyoung was almost completely unaware of his footsteps, taking him straight towards the street. He didn't hear the loud honk of the oncoming car until someone grabbed the collar of his varsity jacket and jerked him to safety.

Immediately Jinyoung started to hyperventilate. His life flashed before his eyes for a split second, and he was clutching his chest to get back to normal. His heart surged, going a mile a minute, and he realized that all of his books went flying.

"Watch where you're going," a familiar voice said into Jinyoung's ears. When Jinyoung turned around, he gasped.

JB.

"What...What are you doing here?" Jinyoung stuttered, picking up his books off the sidewalk.

JB looked away. "I was walking home and then I saw your stupid about to get run over by a Dodge. So I decided to save your life." He put up his hood and stuffed his hands into his pockets.

Jinyoung felt himself blushing. "I'm-I'm sorry-"

"Don't mention it."

Jinyoung blew out a sigh. He was still sort of angry at JB, but he did just save his life. "Thank you," he whispered softly.

At that, JB looked over at him and let out a chuckle. Jinyoung blushed and looked away.

"What?" JB teased a bit.

Jinyoung shook his head. "Nothing, nothing." After a few moments of silence, Jinyoung finally decided to talk to JB about what had been bothering him. "JB?"

"Mm."

He took a deep breath and looked at JB. "Do you...remember me?"

At this, JB closed his eyes. "What did you say?"

"Do you remember me?" Jinyoung said, louder this time. He turned and stepped in front of JB. "We went to preschool together. We were best friends." Jinyoung smiled at the memories, imagining their younger selves having so much fun as innocent children. "We would do the trick where you rolled over me, remember?"

JB opened his eyes again. "I don't know what you're talking about."

"We traded kimbap and sang together and pretended there was a ghost in the abandoned woodshed," Jinyoung tried again, his eyebrows wavering. He has to remember these, doesn't he?

JB just cocked an eyebrow.

Jinyoung decided to try one last time. "We made that promise the day before graduation, that we would never stop being friends...." He held out his pinky.

"JB! JB!"  Jinyoung cried.

"Jinyoungie!" JB yelled.

They met at bottom of their favorite tree.

"Tomorrow is graduation," Jinyoung muttered sadly. "I don't want to go to kindergarten!"

"Awe, Jinyoung, don't cry!" JB said.

"But what if we never see each other again?" Jinyoung said through tears. He didn't want to leave his best friend.

JB thought for a moment, and then held out his pinky. Jinyoung did the same.

"I'll never forget about you," JB promised, locking pinkies with his best friend.

Jinyoung sniffled. "I'll...I'll never forget about you either."

"Our friendship will last forever!" JB smiled.

Jinyoung smiled back. "Forever."

"I'm sorry, I think you have the wrong person," JB muttered, shaking his head.

Poor Jinyoung's heart shattered into a million pieces, his words bringing him back to painful reality with a bang. "W-What?" he trembled. No, he couldn't have...

JB looked at him and studied him once more.

"JB, please," Jinyoung pleaded, his voice breaking. "Ever since we parted ways, I've missed your friendship. We haven't seen each other in years, but I never forgot about you. But I guess you forgot about me." Jinyoung stopped, clutching his books tighter. "But I...I never stopped loving you."

"What...?" JB's face softens. "What are you-"

"And my name is Jinyoung," Junior chokes out, turning around. "In case you forgot. My name is Jinyoung."

He turned around and stormed away from JB, tears about to fall from his eyes. It was true. JB forgot all about him. It stung Junior's heart like a thousand wasps. After all this time, he should've just given up. All of that heartbreak, all of that hoping, all for nothing.

He was about to turn the corner when suddenly he heard, "WAIT!"

Jinyoung cautiously turned around to see JB chasing after him, his hair flying all over the place and his eyes fixed on him and him alone. Jinyoung stopped in his tracks and let the other catch up to him, curious to see what he had to say.

JB approached him, flushed and out of breath. "I remember," JB said, his voice trembling. "I remember it now....how much fun we had as kids. All of those things, I remember now. I didn't even recognize you...but I knew that you were going to be a part of my life somehow...I don't know."

"But I didn't change..." Jinyoung said, his voice soft but angry and bitter. "I look the same...and how could you stop talking to me? After fourth grade I never saw you again!" Jinyoung leaned up against a wall, trying to put some distance between the two. "You broke our promise!"

JB looked at the sky and winced. "I didn't mean to... I never forgot about you, Junior, please trust me."

His words were a downpour of both happiness and sadness to Jinyoung's ears. "Even in the hallways at school, you pretend like I don't exist!" Jinyoung protested, still not done. He wasn't truly sure is JB was lying or telling the truth. "You avoid my gaze and you pretend I'm not there!"

"I know, and I'm sorry. I knew that I recognized you from somewhere." JB cracked a slight smile. "When we first came to high school, you looked so familiar to me, but I never realized it was you. And I never forgot about you. I always missed our friendship, but I had to live like I'd never see you again." He casted a sideways glance at his old friend. "You've changed, Jinyoung. You're not that bad lookin'." He grinned.

Gosh, I miss that smile, Jinyoung thought.

"I missed you," Jinyoung said finally, looking up at his childhood friend. He still looked the same, just with a more defined jawline and the same keen eyes. He was still the same person that he knew and loved.

JB smiled and put his arm around Junior, leaning up against the wall. Watching the cars go by, he said, "I missed you too."
