Chapter 20
VoicemailsYongguk was in a predicament. He had been standing in front of Hwayoung's door for the last ten minutes now, wanting to knock on the door and catch the girl's attention so that maybe they could hang out for the day. Ever since yesterday, after she ran off to hide from her ex, he hadn't seen a sign of her life. And as a friend, he was concerned over her well-being. It was obvious that Hwayoung had a large burden over her shoulder and he didn't need to be best-friends with her to know that. And after yesterday, her distraught image plagued his mind and he needed to see how she was doing.
But why was he so hesitant?
He supposed it was due to their uncertain friendship. Yongguk was willing to admit that their bond was rather strange. They haven't known each other long but due coincidences and impeccable timing, he had the chance to see Hwayoung in multiple vulnerable and embarassing states. Because of that, it defintiely escalated their bond to a different level but despite those random occurences, Hwayoung still held herself back, stayed reserve, and would shut herself out whenever she felt the need to. That didn't offend him, he too didn't share much. It was just the fact that he was unsure of how close of a friend she saw him as that he didn't want to overstep his boundaries where she would take 50 steps back to protect herself.
Regardless, Yongguk only stood there for a few more minutes before coming to a decision. He couldn't stand here all day, even if he was known as the residence nice guy, standing in front of a girl's front door would no doubt label him as a freak so he knocked on Hwayoung's door a few times, patiently waiting for the girl to answer. He counted to 10, heard some rustling from inside and finally the door opened and Hwayoung's head peeked out.
“Hey, Hwayoung.” He greeted the mysterious lady behind the door. “How it going?”
Hwayoung eyed him up and down before clearing , returning his greeting in a much stiffer manner. “Can I help you with something?”
“You sound so formal, Hwayoung. Aren't we friends by now?” He pointed out with a low chuckle. This was expected but he was hoping she would finally loosen up around him. She was always on and off this girl, he didn't know what to expect when he's with her.
And once she heard his comment, she finally relaxed her posture and her once stiff shoulders relaxed a bit. “What do you need?”
“I was gonna go get some ramen at Himchan's place. You wanna come along?” Yongguk always went to Himchan's restaurant to eat. The place was quiet and cozy and he got free food, props of being the owner's best friend. So what wasn't there to like about the noodle house? And as a friend, Yongguk wanted to invite Hwayoung along because he knew she definitely needed a distraction from her turmoil life.
“Are you afraid your crazy ex will come after you?” He questioned once he noticed her nervous glance. “I wouldn't worry about it. I don't think he'll come back to town.”
She didn't look convinced. “Why not?”
“Well, a few citizen's found him to be a concern.” Yongguk's twin brother worked as a city pa
