The Coldest Place Out There
Description
People.
It was a Friday night, and his tired but wandering eyes found it amusing to see hundreds of people trudging down the white blanketed streets of the city he used to love. A lot were with their families, some with their friends, others with their dates, and a few were alone.
Like him.
He has always believed that things are better when seen from afar. He loved seeing figures instead of people. He felt undeniably powerful seeing what's happening like broken images of a panel at his favorite part of the city, all at once. By his self definition of far, what he actually meant was high.
The very reason why he's standing more than half a hundred feet from the ground.
He was planning this for months now. He thought he could never actually do it, but he felt extremely brave tonight. Tonight was the only time he felt so sure and ready, and he knows for himself that there would be no turning back.
He moved himself a little forward, his toes a few inches away from the brink. He closed his eyes for a moment, emptying his mind; guarding it from any doubt wanting to enter. He opened his eyes and directed his gaze to the vibrant night sky, towards the glittering blanket of stars. He knows he's quite sentimental inside, realizing that he wanted to see something beautiful before he decides to end this illusory reality of his.
He moved his left foot forward, his skin screaming from the ice cold night breeze. This was definitely one of the coldest nights he had, if not the coldest. Only one more move and everything will end; well, at least, only for him.
Not for the people around him.
The news may go around for months or so, but it will soon be forgotten.
He will soon be forgotten.
Forgotten.
Did he really want that?
But it's too late for those thoughts now, because his heart was more than ready. It was beating faster and louder than usual, and he thought that this maybe the last time he'd be able to hear it beating. No, scratch maybe. This is the last time. Just as he was about to move his right foot forward, too, his peripheral vison caught a glimpse of a thin figure, more like a silhouette of a woman, walking on the same thin ledge he's in.
He saw her stumble a bit, but she was able to regain her balance before screaming words that terrified his soul, eternally wishing he didn't hear.
Or he really did want to, but he was too much embraced by his pride to admit.
"Your pain ends when you jump and die. But the people who loved and cared so much for you would carry the pain of your death for the rest of their lives. So if you decide to jump there, now, you're not just killing yourself.
...You're killing those people, too."
And that was enough to make him move his now numb left foot back in place. He might be selfish for actually wanting to end his broken life, but he knew that he wasn't selfish enough to die and make the people he love hurt because of him until who knows when.
