The Ones Worth Suffering For

Description

Everyone has problems, but if these twelve high schoolers can make it through with nothing less than the brightest smiles and warmest memories, then it might be time for some people to gain some perspective.

Warning: the whole plot centers around different mental and physical disorders so know in advance.

There also may or may not be a character death, depends on what mood I'm in when it gets towards the end.

Foreword

“Hi, I’m Luhan,” the brown haired boy said, uncertainly.
“We know,” Zitao affirmed with a chuckle.
“Right…” Luhan muttered as he looked down at his feet. “How many times have I met you guys?”
Kris spoke up first, with a bright smile. “Everyday for the past two years. We got used to it after about a week.”
Luhan’s expression turned to one of pure horror “I’m so sorry that you guys have to go through this everyday.”
“Lu, we deal with crap far worse than just your memory loss on a daily basis,” Baekhyun chimed, his eyes eerily close to where Luhan’s were.
“But if you didn’t have to deal with this, then you guys could have normal lives,” Luhan nearly whined.
“Ah, on the contrary, Deer Boy-” Joonmyeon singsonged, reclining in his chair and propping his feet on the table. “You’re not the craziest one here.”
“What do you mean?” Luhan asked, unsure.
Kris responded this time, in an attempt to stop Joonmyeon from insulting anyone too bad, like he had last week when they reintroduced Luhan to everybody for the umpteenth time. “Well, Joonmyeon here is bipolar and just downright rude.”
    “Oh,” Luhan whispered.
“No, no it gets better,” Kris continued. “Jongin’s schizophrenic and his best friend’s name is Kyungsoo,” Kris pointed to Jongin who was curled in his seat with his chin on his knees.
“Which one’s Kyungsoo?” Luhan asked, looking around. Sehun leaned down and whispered something in his ear. Luhan’s mouth formed an “oh”, and he looked at the empty seat next to Jongin and waved. “Hi, Kyungsoo.”
Kris looked down and laughed before resuming. “Chanyeol’s legs are… I never know how to say this.”
“Useless,” the tall boy offered from his seat at the end of the table. “They’re useless.” Minseok shot him a look and Chanyeol lifted his eyebrow. “What? It’s been six years; I’m tired of sugar coating it. I can’t walk. Why can’t we just say that instead of trying not to insult everyone. It’s never insulting when you say the truth, except when we put Joonmyeon in charge.”
“Yeah ok, so Chanyeol can’t walk. Notice the wheelchair. Mmm, who’s next?” Kris looked around, and Joonmyeon’s lack of conscience won out.
    “Helen Keller,” the brunette provided.
“Hey!” Baekhyun called, his head snapping in the direction of Joonmyeon’s voice.
“Ah, yes, Baek and Xing. Luhan; the one with the headphones on, who can’t hear a word that’s actually playing in his head, is Zhang Yixing. He’s deaf. And his trusty companion with the creepy eyes is Byun Baekhyun- blind,” Kris laughed.
“Alright, that’s it, I want Joonmyeon introducing us, you’re even more insulting,” Baekhyun glared hard at Kris’s forehead.
“Zip it, Blinky,” Joonmyeon smirked at Baekhyun, though it was wasted because the other couldn’t see it.
“Nevermind, Pac Man, I like it better when Kris narrates, anyway,” Baekhyun mumbled.
“I knew you loved me more,” Kris grinned at Baekhyun, causing Luhan to laugh. “Sleeping Beauty over there is Jongdae. He’s narcoleptic and can’t keep his eyes open long enough to hold a conversation, but he’s probably the nicest and the smartest of all of us.” Kris motioned to Jongdae who was currently laying across Minseok’s lap, happily frolicking in the meadows of dreamland, or possibly replaying his final level of Warcraft in his sleep. “His redheaded sidekick is Minseok.”
Minseok waved cheerily at Luhan, who waved back, then continued Jongdae’s hair.
“You’ve known me since grade school and it seems you've already met Sehun. Now this, my dear friend, is Zitao,” Kris smiled as he put his arm around Zitao’s shoulders. “Tao for short. He’s got Tourette’s Syndrome. You know what that is?” Kris already knew the answer, but Luhan shook his head anyway.
“It basically means when I get nervous I look like someone who really cannot dance,” Zitao explained.
    Luhan chuckled, confused. “What?”
“I have muscle spasms and my speech becomes impaired. It’s quite funny to these guys, because they know what’s happening and I get nervous pretty often, so it’s no big deal, but it scares people a lot.”
“Interesting…” Luhan said, his eyebrows knit together. Something to his left caught his attention, and his eyes flitted to Baekhyun whose hand was over Yixing’s, moving in the patterns only they could understand. “What… what are they doing?” he asked Sehun.
The youngest just stared nonchalantly at the two and replied, “They're probably insulting all of us in their weird Morse code thing.”
Luhan looked back at Sehun and tilted his head. “Their what?”
Apparently it was Kris's day to do the explaining. "Baekhyun can't sign much because he can't see the signs, and Yixing never learned how to speak because he was born deaf so they developed this weird system of touches to communicate." Kris nodded his head towards the pair and Luhan looked on with the same intrigue and fascination as he did every other day.
Baekhyun was blankly staring forward at something he couldn't see and dragging his fingers along Yixing’s palm in a strange sequence while his other hand tapped more unknown words onto Yixing’s wrist. After a few seconds, Yixing silently spasmed- something that, to Luhan, seemed vaguely like laughter- and the two switched places: Yixing now sending his own set of taps and patterns onto Baekhyun’s skin.
Baekhyun grinned. “Luhan hyung, Yixing says he likes your hair today.”
“Uh, thanks, Zhang Yixing…” Luhan muttered, not even noticing the formality he had just let loose. How easy it was to forget that these strangers were his friends.
Yixing had become pretty accustomed to reading simple things on people’s lips and signed back to the elder you're welcome.
“So, he can't see or read signs, and he can't hear or speak,” Luhan went to confirm.
     “Correct,” Chanyeol nodded once.
“And they're best friends?” Luhan asked again, bewildered.
It was Sehun who nodded this time. “Since they were 7. They met us in freshman year. Every one of us pretty much has their own other half. Kris has Tao, Jongin has Kyungsoo, Baekhyun has Yixing, Joonmyeon has Chanyeol- but only on his good days-, and Minseok and Jongdae are practically joined at the hip.”
Luhan continuously nodded throughout the whole list, like he had so many times before, then raised his eyes to Sehun’s, expectantly.
     “Who's your best friend then?”
A small part of Sehun’s heart was shattered everyday upon the continual realization that this boy had no idea who he was, what they'd been through. But, having no other choice and refusing to lie to the elder, Sehun responded like he did every time he was asked this question:
     “You.”
