Chapter 28

CLOSER [HIATUS]

“Whoops!” Soo Min gasped when her pen catapulted up into the air and landed on Jihoon’s sound mixer.

“For the love of…” Jihoon groaned and stood up to retrieve the pen before turning to face her on the floor behind him with a bored out of his mind Won Woo beside her lying on his back with his arm over his eyes. “Don’t play with the pens!” He scolded, tossing the pen at her. She tried to catch it but failed miserably.

“Sorry!” She giggled sheepishly before looking down at the blank sheet of paper in front of her. The pen was for writing plans out but she had yet to come up with a single one.

“Honestly, how hard is it to plan a birthday party. You should have been done a long time ago.” Jihoon muttered before he returned back to his work. “You’ve been here nearly all morning.”

It was Saturday, October 3rd. Tomorrow was the one and only Yoon Jeonghan’s birthday and Soo Min wanted to throw her lovely Queen a party! But so far, all she’s done is lose three pens and annoy Jihoon since she arrived to his parents house earlier.

“It’s hard!” She whined and fell onto her back, her head fell onto Won Woo’s stomach and a small ‘ouf’ escaped the his lips. “I mean, how do you plan a spectacular party for a spectacular person?!”

“You did it for the past two years, what’s the problem now?” Won Woo sighed and stretched his arms above him. When his fingers brushed against the base of Jihoon’s chair, he grinned and pulled on it which caused Jihoon to almost fall forward with a small gasp, it go the two on the floor laughing.

“All you two ever do is annoy me when you come over! Leave!” He looked back at them with an angry pout.

“Awh! But I wanted you to help me plan this party!” Soo Min looked up at him with the adorable puppy eyes, the look no one could resist.

“Aish…” he knew he couldn’t say no to that face, “fine. For starters, you can have it here.”

“Really?!” She sat up quickly with a huge smile. His parents house was pretty spacious, it’d be perfect if they were to invite a lot of people, and there was a lot who’d be coming to this party, that’s for sure!

“Yeah, I’m sure my parents will be happy to host your boyfriend’s birthday party.” Jihoon nodded. “I’ll provide the music and so my part here is done. Get out. Go shop for the decorations or something.” He made a shooing motion at them before returning to his work once again.

“Okay! Thank you so much, Jihoonie!” She jumped up and gave him a giant back hug, knocking the wind out of him.

“Yeah, yeah, whatever!” He barely got out. “Just be careful on what you buy, because you’re cleaning it all up afterwards.” He warned as he heard the door shut behind him. “She didn’t hear me, did she?” He let out an irritated sigh before looking back to find the room empty. “At least they’re gone now. Finally… peace and quiet. No more distractions, I can finally-”

“Yooooooooo~!” Suddenly a voice entered the room. It was Seungcheol.

He was about to turn and snap at him but his irritation dropped instantly when he figured out who it was. He had to stop the smile that wanted to show itself when he turned in his seat.

“Oh, it’s you.” He said calmly. Again with that greeting!

“I just saw WooMin running out of here like their butts were on fire, did you scold them too harsh again?” Seungcheol gave him a small frown.

“Are you blind? Didn’t you see how happy that girl was?” Jihoon defended. “I told her she could have Jeonghan’s birthday party here, she was running off to buy the decorations now.”

“Oh! Really?!” Seungcheol looked back at the door before looking back at him with a sheepish smile. “Sorry, I’m just so used to you yelling at them, I just thought…”

“It’s fine.” Jihoon assured him before turning back to his desk. He tried to hide the blush that so dangerously tried to spread across his cheeks in front of Seungcheol just now. Why does he have to smile like that?!

“I just came to say Hi.” He ventured a little CLOSER to Jihoon’s desk. “So, you’re not helping them plan the party?” He then asked and glanced around the room.

“I’ve already done my part. I offered my place for the party and will provide the music.”

“Didn’t you want to go shop for decorations with them?”

“No, I’m good. I’d rather stay here and finish my work.”

“Ah, then shall I let you be?” Seungcheol said softly. “Or can I stay and keep you company?”

“You can do whatever…” Jihoon managed to say calmly again.

“Alright! I’ll stay!” Seungcheol beamed while pulling up a nearby chair to sit beside him. He grabbed the extra pen lying next to Jihoon’s papers and fiddled with it quietly.

“Don’t play with the pens.” The younger warned with a deadly glare. It made Seungcheol drop the pen and hold his hands against his chest with a nervous laugh.

“Oh dear mistress, can you do your all mighty King a favor and keep the beautiful Queen occupied for the day?!” Soo Min sung on the phone as she was in a cab on her way to her parents house with Won Woo to borrow her mother’s van since she planned to buy a lot of things for this party. She thought it would be better to leave her car at home today.

“Sure, I was already doing that to be honest.” Jisoo chuckled on the other line when she gasped. “You’re planning his party as we speak, correct?”

“Don’t talk about the party so openly!” She said in a hushed voice.

“He left to the bathroom just now. Relax.”

“Then, yes! That’s what I’m doing. Won Woo is with me but I’m thinking of recruiting more people to help!” She grinned and right away, Won Woo didn’t look too keen on the idea.

“You can always recruit Junhui and our new roommate Minghao. I’m sure the kid will have fun shopping for decorations.”

“What a perfect idea! I’ll call them right now. Just keep the birthday boy indoors for now until we’re done shopping.”

“Unless he’s forgotten what tomorrow is, I’m sure he’s just gonna relax for today and let the kingdom do their work.”

“Whatever, just keep him busy!”

“Will do!” Jisoo chimed before hanging up.

Soo Min sighed before looking slightly bothered and dejected all of a sudden after hanging up… she was possibly not going to see her lover today and she was realizing that just now. Won Woo just rolled his eyes before pulling out his phone to contact Junhui since she was too busy sulking now.

“Yes?” Junhui answered like he was expecting to get called.

“Oh, wrong number. Sorry.” Won Woo teased and was about to hang up when he heard his friend shouting on the phone. “Chill out, I was kidding.”

“Did the kingdom fall into ruins, do I need to save the day?” Junhui said dramatically, Won Woo could literally hear the smirk on his lips.

“I don’t know,” he muttered, glancing at the sulking King, “maybe. Bring the new kid, too. Jisoo said we should invite him to go shopping with us for the decorations for Jeonghan’s birthday party tomorrow.”

“Ah, okay, just a second!” Junhui said before turning away from the phone. Suddenly a slew of Mandarin words flew out of the guy’s mouth followed by the faint sound of a reply that was also in Mandarin. “He’d like to come shopping!”

“Great, then we’ll come get you two now.” Won Woo said before hanging up and telling the driver to make a detour.

They arrived to Junhui’s shared apartment moments later and saw the two outside already waiting for them. Won Woo got out to greet them but sighed when he saw Soo Min still in the backseat being emo with her head resting on the back window.

“What happened?” Junhui chuckled, ducking down to see her sad little face.

“She’s just missing her Queen is all.” Won Woo assured him before looking to Minghao. “Hello.”

“Hello!” He greeted in Korean before bowing. “It’s nice to meet you, I’m Xu Minghao.”

“Same, I’m Jeon Won Woo and that depressed girl in there is Chae Soo Min. Don’t mind her, she’s just missing her boyfriend is all.”

“What happened to him?” Minghao frowned, he was starting to worry.

“It’s okay. It’s her boyfriend’s birthday tomorrow. We’re planning a party so we won’t be seeing him much today. She’s just clingy and misses him.” Junhui explained to him quickly knowing if he tried to explain in Korean the boy wouldn’t be able to understand it quickly. Minghao nodded and understood.

“Let’s get going then, shall we?” Won Woo said before gesturing for Minghao to climb in. Junhui sat in the front passenger seat since only three of them could fit in the back. Once they were in, Won Woo reached across the back seat to snap Soo Min out of her trance. “Yah, get over it! There’s someone who wants to meet you.”

“Huh?” She turned to look at her friend before noticing the new face beside her. He gave her a cute smile and waved with a small ‘Hi’ in English.

“Where did you come from?! Holy…” she looked at him in awe, a huge smile plastered across her face now. “You’re so cute! Your hair… oh my god, your hair looks like ice cream!” And then she started squealing, it was like a 180 in her expression.

“She likes cute things.” Junhui mentioned to Minghao with a laugh. “Get used to it.” Poor Minghao looked scared when Soo Min had started to fangirl!

“At least she stopped sulking.” Won Woo sighed with relief.

“Should I text him?” Mingyu wondered out loud while he sat in the living of his shared apartment by himself. “I shouldn’t?” He lowered his phone with a small frown. “Or should I?” He brought the phone back up, a smile curving at the corners of his mouth. “It wouldn’t hurt to just say hi, would it?”

He brought up his contacts and tapped on Won Woo’s name. He sat there and stared at the number for a few seconds before his mind started to fill with thoughts about the owner of the number. He wondered what he could be doing at the moment?

It’s the weekend, maybe he’s sleeping? I shouldn’t bother him… but then it’s already noon, he should be awake by now? I’m sure he doesn’t make it a habit to sleep in so late on the weekends. But, what if he’s with his friends? He still has other friends besides Soo Min and Jihoon… I don’t know. What should I do? It’s just a text, what am I getting all worked up for?! If he replies, he replies! Simple-!

At that moment it started to vibrate in his hand, causing him drop it when he was startled. He watched in horror when his phone fell down and the screen hit the edge of the coffee table before it landed screen first on the carpet. The loud thud it made when it made contact with the table made him cringe. That can’t be good.

“Please be okay, please be okay, please be okay…” he muttered several times as he reached down for it, praying inside his mind that it was just a minor accident and not something too bad. It was still vibrating and he turned it over to see someone was calling him, but the small crack in the screen stole all of his attention and it almost made him faint as he fell back on the couch with a dramatic scream.

“What, what, what?! What’s going on?!” Seungkwan came rushing out of the kitchen with a spatula in hand. He was trying to cook something in the kitchen just then when he heard his roommate scream.

“My phone!” Mingyu shouted, as if he were in pain. “My poor phone! The screen… it’s cracked.” He barely got out that last bit and his lip quivered.

“Yah, Kim Mingyu! You nearly gave me a heart attack over a cracked screen?! You’re lucky I just don’t crack your head on the table!” Seungkwan scolded while noticing the phone still buzzing. “Answer the phone!”

Despite the horror Mingyu was going through about his damaged device, he did as he was told and answered the phone that turned out to be Jeonghan.

“Hey, is everything okay? What took so long for you to answer?” He asked. Just then the smoke alarm started to go off and Seungkwan shrieked and rushed back into the kitchen. He had totally forgot that he was cooking before he went into the living room. “What’s going on over there?!”

“Hyung! It’s terrible!” Mingyu wailed on the couch, completely ignoring his other two roommates who were rushing over to the kitchen to see what was going on(Sims4 mode activated). “I dropped my phone when you called and the screen…” (He’s that one Sims that glitched and didn’t notice the fire)

“I suppose since you’re not as panicked about the smoke alarm, everything is okay.” Jeonghan said flatly. “Shall I leave you to mourn over your phone?”

“It’s not dead, it’s injured!” Mingyu defended just as the smoke alarm was silenced.

“It’s a phone.” He deadpanned.

“I can’t believe you, hyung!” Mingyu gasped, he sounded so offended.

“I just called to see what you were up to, but it appears you’re in some sort of… dilemma. I’ll let you go now. Good luck with… your phone.” Then Jeonghan hung up.

Mingyu sighed when he saw the small crack on his screen after the call ended. “Why me?” He pouted before looking at the coffee table. “Stupid tabl-” he muttered when he winced in pain. He had kicked it for revenge and the edge decided to damage his foot, too. He yelped and fell to his side, holding his foot.

“First your phone and now your foot? I think we need to get rid of that table…” Seungkwan sighed over at the kitchen entrance, he was watching his friend curled up in pain on the couch.

“Let’s get this! And this! Oh, and that!” Soo Min skipped down the aisle while she tossed things from the store shelves into the shopping cart behind her.

“Noona, are you sure you’re not getting too much?” Minghao asked after looking at the nearly full cart. They had only been in the store for five minutes, literally.

“Nonsense! It’s simply not enough!” She laughed before tossing more things into the cart and they slid off of the pile onto the floor. “Oh… I see what you mean.” She stared at the items on the floor. “Go get another cart!” She demanded quickly to Junhui who just sighed and did as he was told.

Meanwhile...

At the end of the aisle Won Woo was looking at some of the party hats by himself. He figured he wouldn’t be needed on picking out the decorations, but thought to take a look at the hats just in case she were to ask for his opinion.

Getting further down the end of the aisle, he noticed the large selections of party headbands ranging from bunny ears, to an angel’s halo. He immediately thought of Jeonghan when he saw that and laughed. Right next to the halo was a pair of devil horns and he thought of Jihoon. “That’d fit him perfectly.” He snickered before his eyes landed on a pair of cat ears.

He stilled for a second before he started to remember that moment when Mingyu walked him home after they ran into that dog in the park. "You should wear some cat ears next time, it’d be cute!" He could feel the blood rush up to his face at the small memory. He could recall the warmth of his hand against his when he held it, how he felt so comfortable like that… holding his hand.

“Oh~! Kitty ears!” Soo Min squealed and startled him.

“Don’t sneak up on me like that!” He scolded before she took the ears from his hands and reached up to place them on his head.

“Let me take a picture!” She whipped out her phone.

“No!” He covered his face when she pointed her phone at him. She laughed while taking the picture, she at least knew it was him she was taking a picture of at least. “You know, instead of the boring old party hats, let’s get these headbands instead!” She smiled when she noticed the halo and devil horns.

“No, stick to the party hats. Use the headbands for a Halloween party or something.” Junhui spoke up behind them after returning from fetching another cart.

“What do you think, Minghao?” She frowned at the older two before looking to him.

“Uhh…” he looked at the shelf of headbands and party hats, “these are cool.” He pointed at the silver party hats that were the closest to him.

“... party hats it is then!” She beamed before grabbing a bunch. “But I’m getting you those ears!” Soo Min snatched the pair of black fluffy kitty ears just as Won Woo was trying to put them back.

“Why?” He sighed and followed her away from the aisle.

“Because you looked so cute! That’s why!”

“How’s your foot? Are you ever going to walk again?” Seungkwan said sarcastically as he sat on the edge of the couch Mingyu was lying on with his foot propped up.

“I’m fine.” He sighed, not appreciating his friend’s attitude.

“Your phone is going to be fine, the operation was a success.” Seokmin suddenly came out of the kitchen. “It turned out to be a scratch, not a crack.”

“Damn it, Kim Mingyu, are you blind~?!” Seungkwan hit the guy on the stomach.

“Don’t hit me!” He complained and nudged the younger off the couch.

“You may see the patient now.” Soonyoung walked in and handed Mingyu’s phone over delicately.

“Oh, baby… you’re okay.” Mingyu whispered, he was clearly relieved.

“Wow.” Seokmin blurted out. “This got strange super fast.”

“No kidding!” Seungkwan agreed and the three stood there and judged their friend.

“Leave me alone!” Mingyu pouted before turning away from them.

“Gladly! C’mon guys!” Seungkwan beckoned the other two to follow him. “Since the food was burned, let’s just eat out instead.”

“What about him, though?” Soonyoung asked when they were at the door.

“He said leave him alone, didn’t he?” Seungkwan rolled his eyes.

“But still!” Seokmin laughed and headed back over to Mingyu. “C’mon, let’s go eat! You’ll feel better!”

It didn’t take even two seconds for Mingyu to think about it, he was up and out of the door before his friends completely ready to eat!

...

“Thanks for helping me, you two!” Soo Min waved at both Minghao and Junhui from the van’s driver window. “Jeonghan’s party should be around 2pm tomorrow, so I’d love it if you could come by Jihoon’s at noon to help put the decorations up?”

“Sure.” Junhui smiled while Minghao nodded excitedly next to him, it was really cute!

“Great! Then we’ll see you tomorrow!” She honked the horn before driving off with another wave.

“Did you have to honk the horn?” Won Woo shook his head before looking out the passenger side window.

“Of course!” She laughed. “Since we already dropped off the party stuff at Jihoon’s, let’s go switch out to my car. Call Mingyu up and see what he’s up to. I’ll drop you off.”

“What?” He looked over at her, surprised.

“I’m pretty sure we both had that certain someone on our mind all day, let’s go spend some time with them!” She smiled at him once they reached a stop light. She really couldn’t go a full day without talking to her lover apparently!

“No, I’m good. Just drop me off at home.” Won Woo looked back out the window with a nervous tone.

“C’mon, Won Woo! Stop getting so shy, go hang out with your future lover!” She teased and poked his arm. “Go have a laugh with him, okay?”

“I don’t know.” He sighed while staring down at his phone, he didn’t even bother to scold her for what she said about Mingyu being his future lover, maybe because he was starting to accept it now. He wanted to go see him again, but it felt so sudden and for some reason he just wasn’t really up to it right now. They had seen a lot of each other this week, but then again that wasn't such a bad thing, right?

“Okay, if you’re not ready, I won’t push it. We’ll just go return mom’s van, and go home. Maybe get some pizza and watch some movies?” Won Woo frowned. He didn’t think she’d skip seeing Jeonghan just because he didn’t want to go out and see Mingyu right now. She was sacrificing for him again…

“We’ll see them tomorrow, right?” He asked softly.

“Yup!” She nodded and smiled his way since the light hadn’t changed yet. “I guess I didn’t think about all that shopping we did. Feeling a bit tired now that I’m sitting still.”

“Right.” He chuckled at that.

“So pizza and movies it is?” She tilted her head.

“Yeah. Since it’s Jeonghan’s birthday tomorrow, I’m sure he’s going to hog up your time after the party… so I want to hang out with my wingman before then. I’ll hang out with Mingyu tomorrow when the party’s over. Deal?”

“DEAL!” She grinned from ear to ear. “Ah, I’m so excited now!” She looked out the windshield and by chance, by fate, she saw a familiar group crossing the street just then. “Hey, look! It’s Mingyu and the others!” She pointed.

“What?” Won Woo looked out to see it was indeed their friends. It was at that moment he started to think he really should believe in fate just a little bit more.

“Wanna say hi?” She was about to roll the window down but he stopped her, but his elbow ended up hitting the steering wheel causing it to honk the horn at them. Talk about deja vu! He’s dont that once before, how embarrassing! They could hear Seungkwan shriek and start shouting at them. Luckily Won Woo was able to duck down before he could get caught. Soo Min just pulled her hoodie over her head to block her face, bowing at them to apologize. The four didn’t recognize her and kept on walking. “Nice going, klutz.” She teased when he sat up properly in his seat again.

“Shut up.” He pouted. “The light’s green, go.”

Shortly after, they arrived to her parents house to drop the van off. Her parents weren’t home by the time they got back, so they took a cab back home immediately. A part of her thought to wait for them to get home, but the other part told her not to. After finding out from Hyungwon that there was an affair, she hadn’t felt so keen on meeting with her parents. Even when she texted her mother to ask about using her van, it felt weird, despite her mother happily greeted her. Of course she wouldn’t act out of the ordinary because she had no clue of what her daughter found out recently, those tense and awkward feelings were one sided and only on Soo Min’s side, unfortunately.

“Are you okay?” Won Woo asked as they were waiting for the cab to show up.

“I’m fine.” She nodded and looked up at him with a small smile. Their ride showed up a moment later and they got in and were on their way home.

After they left, Won Woo wondered if they’d spot Mingyu and his friends again on the drive home. Thinking back on how he accidentally honked the horn and the way Seungkwan reacted made him laugh in his seat quietly.

“Oh! I think I see Mingyu again!” Soo Min suddenly exclaimed, pointing out the window. Won Woo just grabbed her and made her duck as they drove by. “It’s not like they know it was us who honked at them, chill out!” She laughed in his hold. It must’ve been fate doing its magic today.

Once they were home, they changed into more comfortable clothes before sitting on the couch to eat when the pizza arrived after ordering it on the way back. They weren’t sure which movies to watch tonight and settled for TV for now. When Soo Min came back from fetching more napkins, she could see Won Woo wearing the black kitty ears from the store earlier. “You’re wearing them!” She squealed, rushing back to her seat.

“I got you a pair, too.” He chuckled before handing them over. “Now we match.”

“Awwwwww~!” She cooed while placing them on her head. “Meow!”

“Meow.” Won Woo said back with an embarrassed laugh.
