Disabling Commenting / Fanfiction Rants?

Well, I am bored these days. Other than writing, I don't have much to do. Let's have some discussion regarding feedbacks and reviews, and other fanfiction rants.

I used to don't understand why disabling commenting is a thing. My friend who was a popular writer posted stuff on ao3 and told me she dread reviews coming in. I didn't understand why either, isn't it great to get feedbacks for your writings? Now, I kind of do understand it. Well I understand why disabling commenting is a thing and why some author use it. My take on it is different though.

Yes, I write for fun and write for my own enjoyment, but I share my writings not just to share, but I hope to see if anyone enjoy it and tell me if they enjoy it. Or if they have something that they'd like to know about, and see readers have a discussion with each other. However, the genre I write for aren't really my fandom's cup of tea. Oh well. LOL. So I think I came to a conclusion that I should disabled commenting for some stories and will open it up after completion. Furthermore, most of my stories has the 'comment bonus' on it, and they're all 'subscribers only' story, yet when I received a comment, someone said they're looking forward to it, but haven't subscribe? LOL, you just want that double karma points.

I think this way, it kind of make me feel more at ease with writing. If anyone who is enjoying my writing could just pm me or leave a wall message.

Your thoughts? You can talk about other things. I just want to read people thoughts when I'm on break from writing.

@Mishtique Don't get me wrong, the reason I have an AFF acc is to share my writings. I used to think the same that disabling comment is a bit ridiculous. Now I somewhat understand as I get attached to certain stories that i'm writing. Those are WIP, and I share them as I write, but at the same time I feel anxiety on them so I just disable them until I finish with them. I'll open them up when it's in completion. Certain stories I will have comments opened for the reason that you stated.

@chanwooyah "It's like even if it fits your story, you may see some errors there." ? What do you mean by that? Like a comment is for the story, but the author will see errors? That depend on the author, I don't care, so long as its relating to my stories. It's the comments that are outright used for a quick karma points and not even read my stories that I find annoying.

No, readers should give advices or discuss the story in the comment section, there is a spoiler tag for spoilers. The idea of sharing a story is to get feedbacks for your story and writing. And feedbacks are usually discussion, if your readers discuss among themselves about your story in the comment section, it means your story is doing something. That's what I'd like to see. I'm sure if you are a good writer or someone who's full of creativity and firm on your decision (not sway by readers reviews), your creativity won't be damaged anyway possible.

Some reviews are needed to improve.

@-FruitsAreBeautiful- That is also another reason to disable comments. Well, for me, I rarely get comments, so it's better if I just disable it while it's in WIP. I do this for stories that has the 'comment bonus' on it. Because i'm sure i'm going to get someone coming in to give me a comment but never read my story to get that double karma points. That would be more disappointing tbh. I'll open it when it's in completion. I don't mind any type of comments so long as it's relating to the story/me as an author.

Yeah, readers these days are more silence. The other day I was wondering how published authors do it. They don't get readers' feedbacks immediately. All they have is their editor, well if they even get to the point of getting an editor. They'd have to write and discuss with themselves. They'd only get feedbacks after published. Kind of sad isn't it? Can never be an author.

@Lidashen Exactly! I don’t disable comments on all my stories but there are just a few that scares me. I’ll open them when they’re complete.

@MissMinew I have the same feelings and anxiety as you do when it comes to comments. I do feel a bit weird if someone were to comment on my story while i'm writing, especially if they don't like where I'm going. Especially when it comes to stories that I feel so attached too. Those are the one that I disabled comments for. The one that I am experimenting on, I left them open. *surprisingly they're usually the one most liked* LOL. And it's not like I will disable the comments forever. I'll open it after completion.

I don't think I can ever disable comments. I'm too much of a selfish to not love some appreciation. I write for my own enjoyment, as a kind of release from all these plots that keep haunting me and I enjoy sharing it. What use is sharing when you don't allow feedback or comments? That's like talking but not getting any replies from your partner, and we all know that's boring. But honestly, if it helps you, you do you

Comments all the times are nonsense, that's the first. It's like even if it fits your story, you may see some errors there. And also no one should give advice or some indecent spoilers. It will damage your creativity. You on your own. Better them leave this alone than to give out of the way reviews.

I think I would disable it if I wrote a story that would trigger some people or if I get mean comments that don't have to do anything with fair criticism anymore. I need comments to know when/if people like what they are reading; it's horrible to work on a new chapter and no one comments anything except "can't wait for the new one" like wtf I just updated, how about telling me what you liked or didn't like? A writer can't improve when the reader doesn't share their opinions as long as they are honest. I can handle a bad comment but I'd prefer having those people message me directly instead of commenting on my story.

I have an old story that used to be with comments disabled. It has been ongoing since May 2015 and I’m still nowhere near finished because lately an update takes me between 9 and 15 months. So I disabled comments because I was genuinely scared of the comments to come when I did update. At first it was weird but then I felt relief. It was nice, not having to worry about backlash or random comments about when to update. I could write at my own pace and not care about what a lousy writer I was (am). For whatever purpose, I don’t really think badly of disabled comments. Sometimes a little sad I can’t express my ultimate joy for a story but not bad of the author.
