Is there something you wish you saw more of in Kpop fanfics?

Whether it's something you rarely see or maybe something that you wish got represented/presented better?

Politics? There's rarely anything political in the fanfics here. And social issues. I want more fics where idols are seen as real human beings who go through genuine problems and hardships.

Idols written as bad people. I recently wrote a twice MinaxChaeyoung fic where Mina leads Chaeyoung on (but its really just Mina being Mina). Some people liked it, a few other people were more "please portray Mina in a better light". No one is perfect so it'd be nice to see some idols written as quite screwed up because this is fanfiction after all and not real.

real angst fanfics

I’ve read all the comments on this discussion and I quite agree with all of them. There are many topics that are scarce around aff and others that are largely popularized, my guess is that it’s because they are easier to relate to. Most of us have gone to school and developed friendship and –hopefully- love, so that’s where most of the ‘cliché’, romcom, slice of life and fluff falls into. There are many other situations and experiences that are very relatable or other cases that are fantasies that most of us fans want to project, which is why fanfics exist in the first place, and those end up being the majority of what is written in fics. Variety is out there, just a little harder to find. I agree that we should try to expand topics and come up with interesting stories, intricate and complex characters, and coherence within the reality being used (i.e.: the educational system being the correct way it should be depending on the country). I don’t want to promote my story, but I just happen to be writing one that has many topics that have been chosen amongst the users that have commented on this post. It’s scifi, adventure, abilities, suspense. Ot12 with a little romance on the side, but focused on friendship and character development. It’s more about the group of characters, trying their best to overcome all obstacles while remaining together as friends, rather than the couple in love. The plot is different and sort of complex. And I take time in researching to make things coherent and according to the culture. There are still some topics that could be expanded, like ual orientation, mental illnesses, etc. The thing that I want to point out about this, is that I’ve been working on this fic for over a year, and I’ve had the luck to have great subscribers that leave comments where they appreciate the differences. It took long for me to gain them, so I know that these topics (scifi and others) are not popular around here –and that’s much to say since it’s an EXO fic, which shows that not all EXO fics are popular just because of the group, the genre also plays a part in that. So I encourage all of you to create something that is different and that is something you can look forward to writing every day. A story that inspires you so much that you manage to find ways to interlace all these topics and ideas that you wish to show more about. Be it about the LGBT community and many more of the spectrum; be it about cultural differences and how they mold the reality and people within it; be it fictional worlds that translate the reality we live in; be it rich characters that are much more than pretty faces and show as much emotion and complexity as you are as a person. The main reason we all are here is to share stories that we have fun creating. So dare yourselves to write all those ideas you have, and never be discouraged by the lack of audience, because there must be more out there who are looking for stories that have the topics you wish to see more of too. They’ll come around at their pace, as long as you keep yourself inspired, passionate and truthful with what you’re creating. (Sorry if this sounds like a rant, I just had a lot to say).

@counterattack Oh yeah, sometimes the happier ending of a story can sometimes seem worse than the angstier one imo. Like maybe the author put more work and love into the true ending or I dunno--but yeah I think it shows sometimes. If you feel your story should end truly angsty, then I think you should do it, ya know?

@Stargazerxx Oh, I'd love to see all of those (though I tend to see a lot of slice-of-life stories already) and hmm think I've read maybe...1 or 2 stories that had a character with mpd.

To be honest, I could do with some more fics that has TERRIBLE, HEART BREAKING endings. I am such a fan of angst and I feel like too many writers end up doing a happy ending just to make readers happy. I understand, though, because I am also one of those authors. I wrote like, a bad ending and so many people were upset by it that I am considering a happyish ending sequel. In my true vision, though, I feel like no happyish ending is truly possible. The damage is done and the best I can get out is bitter sweet. That's probably why I am procrastinating writing that sequel. >> Because I am scared to break more hearts. The Baekyeol shippers can be very fierce.

Korean culture. Often times the fanfiction is westernized while representing Korean face claims and names. It bugs me when the main characters are korean with korean names and everyone else is 'Ashley' and 'Jonathan'. The lack of understanding towards Korean culture really makes the characters not fit their environment. It bugs me and it's not very done well in fanfiction.

@NoonasAreHot that's true.. o.o sometime the OC's character didn't shine at all.. o.o

@dhidhi0495 Yeah...after all an OC needs character development so the reader's would get to know and get attached to him. I'm not really a fan of back stories so long chapters it is...
[deactivated] 7 years ago
@NoonasAreHot that would be great.. O.O for character development I think it's a great idea too but with a price of a long chaptered story.. .-.

Most of the things that I'd like to see is already being mentioned right here.

1) I would like to see more stories that focus on the friendship of one group maybe with at least lesser romance. I think I've read one comedy boygroup fic that have almost zero romance in it (some of them are being dumped by their gf something like that I dont remember that much). 2) Horror/dark fanfics. It doesn't necessarily about being haunt or cursed by a ghost. 3) Rare mental illness such as Multiple Personality Disorder, I'm not sure if there are any. 4) A story with the antagonist as the main character, in which the narrative is in the antagonist's point of view portraying their motive and reasons behind their hostile attitude something like that. I dont know how to explain otl. 5) Slice of life

@reddoll123 I know, right? I mean they can pair their male idol with another male idol, but why they can't pair their male idol with male oc? o.O give a fanboy of a male idol a chance..

For me, it's that there's this lack of realism in many fics. I guess it really bothers me sometimes when characters are given only one specific stereotype to adhere to (like one person is the designated 'weak' one, so they can't do anything but stand there and look pretty, perhaps even act like the damsel in distress). I understand that the world in each fic is something the writer gets to represent, but it'd be awesome if they possessed some real-life shades in their characters that we could relate to. I've already seen some fics like that, but its like looking for a needle in a haystack, you know?

@KissTheDream OH MY GOODNESS!!! I couldn’t have said this better myself yo! Like seriously! I agree with every point you just made, and they also apply to me as well since I too myself love doing these things and plan/want to do more in the future with stories. It and saddens me when I can’t really find any great/interesting enough (at least to me) OTwhatever fanfics where there is no romance involved or barely just a little of it involved in a way that I like. Like, no matter what it is, just the group of characters staying as friends throughout the whole thing, or still being really close friends without letting the romance aspect interfere too much, that would be awesome. Using bands like B.A.P & Vixx for sci-fi, adventure, action and other genres alike is also another nice thing to see. I don’t really care much for kpop x anime elements as you probably do, but it’s still a cool thing to be able to see, and again, I want to do more in the future.

@reddoll123 Well, I think some chapters aren't planned enough sometimes. Like, they just spit out something for the sake of updating, if that makes sense. And because of that, the chapters are a bit too short and brief? I understand filler chapters though. I make those too. I just prefer a good-length chapter with good content. But tbh, I just get sad when I read an update and its too short and I have to wait again xD

@500sunny500 I feel like I've seen a lot of slice-of-life though, like it tends to coincide with fluff pretty easily.

@alcyonne What would you consider to be too short btw? Also, I guess is there a limit to how much you'd read for one chapter?
