BACKGROUND
— had an upper middle class upbringing
— father is a journalist that traveled often while his mom is a stay at home mom that doted on him a little too much
— he went to an all boys private school growing up but always felt the system was too slow for him
— won many awards for being academically inclined
— during 11th grade he was able to test out of school and just take the college entrance exam
— was one of the few people in korea that got a perfect score
— didn't want to go to a school based on the name but if he liked it since harvard didn't care if he went to snu, yonsei, or jju. he couldn't go abroad because his english wasn't good enough then
— ultimately chose jju since its closest to home
PERSONALITY

taekwon is a very organized person. he's keen on following the rules and will usually follow any instruction that is given to him. if he rebels in any way, its quite rare or because he found a loophole in the rules. with that being said he likes to set his own rules as well, he knows what he likes and is very particular.
for example, as an ra he'll write a wordy dorm agreement with specific rules that can't be broken and expects his everyone to sign it. for example, in section 8, "visitors", subsection c, "females",, it states that females aren't allowed on his floor after 11pm. now if people follow his rules are a totally different story. but that doesn't mean he isn't open to additions, its a resident hall agreement after all, and the other residents have to put their rules in as well. as long as it makes sense of course.
naturally taekwon is a quiet person, he doesn't like being around a lot of people and doesn't find small talk amusing so he just keeps to himself. usually reading or watching a lecture on youtube while in any social setting, anything to feed his brain which is always so eager to learn.
his social skills are really weak and he at realizing social cues. he would interrupt random peoples conversation to correct them with facts or correct their grammatical errors. when he has his headphones on, listening to something else, trust me he's still listening to your conversation as well. a lot of people find him weird for this, i mean who wouldn't find a stranger correcting them weird, but he actually thinks he's being helpful and he honestly can’t help himself.
thats just one of the things that makes him socially awkward. he also can't process sarcasm and doesn't find others jokes funny unless they're intellectually stimulating. leaving him to be the only one not laughing asking whats so funny? after a while his mom told him to fake laugh so now he lets out a very unconvincing fake laugh thats an awkward series of ha ha ha's.
but he isn't completely shut off. he just hasn't found the right person to talk to. taekwon can be very talkative when he wants to, especially when its about something he's passionate about. when someone new talks to him, he gets so excited to enthuse about his new findings and goes on and on without even considering if the other person understands or wants to hear what he's saying. usually after this kind of encounter people don't talk to him, leaving him alone all over again.
his mom taught him not to talk down to people who aren’t as smart as him so he doesn’t outwardly call people stupid but if you ask for his opinion on something, he’ll give you an intricate description of why your idea is completely idiotic and would never work while also subliminally dissing your mental capacity. but when he’s talking to someone older he’d ask if they want the truth or the simplified version. with the simplified version being so kid friendly that its almost insulting. his brain just isn't wired to be considerate towards others.
maybe its because he’s a hardcore mamas boy he’s quite selfish and is used to having things his way and people catering to him i.e. his mom. he genuinely gets confused when people don’t want to hear about his new mathematical findings like his mom would. some might even call him hard headed because he’s so stubborn. he expects others to just do things for him if he asks for it because why wouldn’t they, and when he doesn’t get his way he gets a little whiny and petty, like "well you didn't do _ for me so why should i do it for you?" or the classic "i know you are but what am i".
taekwon is also a very competitive person. he is strong-willed and can be manipulated to try anything if you just push him enough. all you have to do is say "i bet you can't do this" and he'll do it just to prove you wrong. usually he isn't comfortable getting out of is comfort zone and is hesitant due to his multiple fears. he's always thinking about the what ifs and the possible diseases he could get from doing something relatively simple. but his competitive side takes over sometimes and he takes a chance. he also hates leaving things unfinished and prefers to finish tasks all at once no matter how long it takes.
however, behind all of this, taekwon is like a child at heart. he gets excited over little things like math and star wars, he's extremely creative and often thinks outside the box which people find witty, he is clueless when it comes to common sense but can solve intricate theories and he's very naive. he takes what everyone says for face value because why would someone lie for no reason? in fact he's a bad liar himself, he gets all sweaty and nervous when he's forced to lie. honestly, all he really wants to do is just take over spacex. is that so hard?
